Tesla Secret Octovalve Design is Genius According to Sandy Munro

The Tesla Model Y is equipped with a very special new feature, the Octovalve, which has been touted by Elon Musk as an engineering masterpiece. Car specialist Sandy Munro calls the Octovalve "genius" along with the Model Y heat pump which will give Tesla one of the most efficient electric vehicles on the road.

    So many ideas that I once toyed with in my mind but then forgot keep becoming realities with Tesla. We should have city level octovalves, really. When you think about it, there's in the order of a million places in a city where either heating or cooling is inefficiently achieved, at any one moment. At our homes we heat up the air when using the stove, while the air conditioner is inefficiently struggling to remove the heat energy wasted in cooking. And your fridge fights with your stove and your coffee machine.

    Adam Mackenzie - Sandy Munro said it’s bureaucratically impossible for the domestic automakers to create something like the SuperBottle. There needs to be full cooperation between different systems teams (powertrain cooling, HVAC, etc.), which doesn’t happen in Detroit. I’d assume this applies to European manufacturers as well. The Octovalve is even more integrated, touching electronics, powertrain, heating, air conditioning, and even the self-driving computer. Other automakers don’t stand a chance.

    Bryan Noga I totally agree. For total transparency here I’d like to add that I’m a 22 year veteran of Toyota working in QC. Nothing we ever bring up for suggestions ever make it into future designs. I’ve given up, the worst day at Toyota for me was the day Tesla arrived to remove their equipment. We had been partners in building the all electric RAV4. Toyota’s decision at the time to abandon battery powered electrics in favour of Hydrogen was the miss guided decision which will ultimately destroy the company. In my opinion.

  • @ClockworksOfGL

    @ClockworksOfGL

    Adam Mackenzie - I had heard Toyota’s hydrogen obsession came about because of Japanese government policy. In their defense, nobody was insane enough to think batteries would get so cheap so quickly. Chevy went with that crazy-complicated PHEV powertrain in the Volt specifically because their projections of future battery costs were so high. According to Bob Lutz, GM was paying ~$350 kWh at the cell level when that car came out. The cost dropped to $145kwh when the Bolt came out in 2017. This drop is happening far faster than anyone predicted.

    Hi TMIO, quick error I found - the paint issues aren't because the factory is older or newer (which would imply this issue would occur in newer factories and as such be a long term issue). It is because the Freemont factory was repurposed from its GM and Toyota times (I think those were the companies, but I'm not sure). I know it might seem like I'm being picky, but I feel it has major different impacts on the sustainability of this issue.

    Dude you’re killing me here. You neglected to use words to simply tell us what the octovalve even does. Which, if I’m correctly hearing between the lines here, is route and re-route liquid antifreeze to/from a number of different devices, some of which generate heat or cold, and/or need heating or cooling, in different situations. Is that correct?

  • @TMIOTesla

    @TMIOTesla

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes octovalve provides the connections between the stuff that generates hot and cold to the stuff that needs to be heated or cooled. Exactly what you said. They can cool the drivetrain and the battery at the same time for example. Yeah I'm not sure what types of coolant they're using, but it's similar to antifreeze. Coolant can't freeze so that's important. I gave a few examples, but say you turn on the heating in the car, the heatpump and generate heat and then the octovalve can open a valve to let hot coolant pass through a radiator and the heat be blown into the car. It just handles all the things you're used to and familiar with in your car, but in a very compact way as opposed to having multiple systems in your car for each function.
