Tesla Model Y review after 1100 miles of family life. The good, the bad and the long term efficiency
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
#TESLA #MODELY #Y
So 2 weeks and 1,100 miles of family and business use has put my new Tesla Model Y Long Range to the ultimate test! It hasn't had an easy time of things but how has it coped and what do I think of it?
I have a couple of suggestions for ways Tesla can improve pre-delivery process but otherwise it's a pretty darned near-perfect family car. It's just the right size; big but not too big. Very practical. We've completed a family trip to Devon already. The cabin is excellent and just check out how much stuff can be put into the vast centre console!
I've also tested it for long term efficiency including dad duties like school run drop-offs, going to dance classes, commuting to work plus work trips to London and Cornwall.
Plus i talk about why it's not really an SUV, or a crossover, but it's just ergonomic!
Overall I love it. Arguably the best family EV / electric vehicle out there, well as long as the budget can stretch this far because it isn't cheap. But i will have a little moan about a few little bits along the way. In fact, lets get them out of the way first!

I'm pretty impressed by the size of the centre console. I've just ordered two Model Y as additional storage areas. This should give me more space inside my garage.

Yep I just ordered 2 cyber trucks to use as storage units myself. 🤷🏻♂️
You complaining about the ride comfort made me laugh. I owned a '93 Ford Ranger pickup truck. I wanted to put knobby tires on it, so that I could get around in the snow. I selected the "BF Goodrich All Terrain Radial Tires" in the 31' diameter size. Of course, there was no way that these "Monster Truck" tiires were going to pass the wheel-wells on my truck without some modifications. I bought a lift kit from "SUPERLIFT" in Monroe, LA and lifted the suspension 4". This included extra-long, heavy--duty coilsprings in the front. Now, the front of my truck was 4" higher than the rear. It looked like it was "popping a wheelie" as it rolled down the street! T o make the rear the same heigh as the front, I added an extra leaf spring to the rear end. When I finished, the 31 inchers fit like a dream, and I was very pleased by the look of my "Little Monster" truck! The ride was a different story. When I picked up a business associate of mine, he immediately complained. "It's a ROCK!" He cried as we bounced down the road over Chicagoland's potholes. My lady refused to ride in it, telling me "Nobody loves the truck!"
You’re my new favorite car reviewer. Very fair unlike many others who are easily influenced by car makers posh treatment they receive - first class plane tickets, hotel rooms, goodies etc.
Centre console storage part of the video cracked me up 😅 well-integrated 👏🏼
Brilliant review video. I am considering buying one, and comparing against competition, so this video really helped
Planning to switch my M3 to and MY. This is THE BEST review I’ve watched! Thanks.
Another great film. always reliable and truthful - having watched yours and other similar films I have ordered Model 3
Brilliant review as always. Loved the storage space in the console, LOL.
Thanks. Another informative review. I'm a Model 3 owner and the one comment I would make about ride quality is efficiency. The energy used to compress a softer spring or air system would be energy lost to the drive chain. So I agree there are times when a softer ride would be more comfortable. But I continue to be amazed by how efficient the Model 3 is and feel that the ride is one of the reasons. Keep up the good work

I haven't seen any studies on this but my guess would be that the effect on efficiency of a looser ride is negligible and unlikely to be a factor in Tesla's decision on suspension settings. More likely they've gone with a firm ride due to the performance of the cars, it's easy to forget that even a mid-range Tesla is close to supercar acceleration.
Air suspension and adaptive headlights on the Y and I would change. Efficiency, practicality and Superchargers makes it a great choice.

Great review! Took delivery of our Model Y on Dec. 26th, and really love it! We paid an extra $5,000 to have "Dual Motor" underlined. Yea... they tossed in Brembo brakes, a carbon fiber spoiler, matrix headlights... but we all know, it was the underline, below dual motor that I really wanted! Great car, and a great value, although they're going up quite a bit in price. Thanks for your review!

Great update review, so thanks...my MYLR should be with me next month and your videos continue to convince me that I have made the right decision even though I only managed to test drive the Model 3. My only real concern with moving from combustion engine to EV is range, but the recent video of your trip to the conference was reassuring, so now really looking forward to taking the plunge.
Cheers .. excellent review .. picking my long range Y in Q2. Really looking forward to it….
Loved this review. I wish there were more detailed reviews like this in Australia

Just had a good laugh now. Jack; spare wheel; fan……….thanks for making my day Richard 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I had scratches on my M3P on delivery(8th Mar 22) too. Swirls and stonechips on a car with 9 miles. Great video!
The center console gag was hilarious; top drawer, lads. Can't wait for mine to arrive in 6 weeks :)
We are averaging about the same over 9000 miles in our model Y performance. It’s a firm ride yes, little crashy sometimes but on the highway it’s totally good and overall it’s a brilliant car Great video!!!!

Very good, top kudos for the centre storage, that made me chuckle
Great information! We have been recently delivered the same coloured Model Y car and we are trying out the features as well. One of the best and safe car which is a big reassurance for me. One remark is that the monitor can remove extra click under navigation if the car is in driving mode...sometimes it's annoying to drag down the additional screen.
Phew, ordered our Y today, then come home to see this. Feeling very relieved. Even got a brilliant trade in price for our Model 3.

Love the humor! Keep it up. Love your objectivity too.
Ha ha!! Both the twig stuff and the storage joke was awesome. More of those stuff! Love British humor ;) Great review, agree with everything. I'd also add that it would also be great if, while in "sports mode", you'd get more road feedback through the steering wheel on top of stiffer suspension and firmer steering.
Thanks for the review. I'm looking forward to get mine in September.
LOLZ, that centre console tho!!! Great Video as ever
This is great stuff. Love to see the constructive criticism from the Tesla fans. It's more impactful coming from someone who clearly likes the brand. Also all very good points and things that Tesla would do well to fix.

Even with 2 dogs and a toddler the white seats in our model 3 and Y have held up very well (mud, spilled milk, crumbs, sand, food, you name it). A little scrubbing with baby wipes and they are good as new.
Richard, Totally agree on all of that. I think I was at the Southampton first day event just after you. And we both chose the same colour and spec. Good choice. Keep up the great work. Maybe one day you can fit me some aftermarket extras. Regards Bernie

Spot on about the pre delivery, my model 3 was filthy inside and not amazing outside either
Awesome vid, one of your best! 👏
Absolutely agree the Y is great for families- the height makes getting a toddler in and out significantly easier than in a model 3 and the trunk space (while it slopes quite drastically) still fits 2 good sized dogs (love dog mode). We have the 7 seater version and the additional seats have come in handy a number of times where we wanted to take one car vs two with friends (great for kids and ok for adults up to ~5ft 5).

Love the storage…lol. That was funny and we agree 100% with ur review. Sold the i3 and we are MY all the way.
Ha ha, Richard, I love how you turned the centre console into Mary Poppins' carpet bag! Seriously though, there were a few things I didn't like about my Model 3, but they were easily fixed and will work on a Model Y. So, for other DIY enthusiasts, here's how to do it... 1. Sunglasses/specs holders: It should be illegal for any manufacturer to sell cars which don't have a holder for your sunnies! Fortunately, it's easy to stick the hard cases they came in to the lower dashboard on either side of the steering wheel using double-sided body mounting tape. 2. Anti-glare trim patches: The white interior is great, but on sunny days the ends of the dashboard trim panel reflect into the side mirrors, obscuring the view. To fix, simply stick a piece of matt vinyl (or Alcantara fabric in "anthracite", if you want to match the door trim exactly) over the last 15cm on either side. 3. Right Side Footrest: Autopilot is great, but you still need to keep your right foot handy for emergencies. Unfortunately, there's nowhere convenient to rest it close to the pedals. I got a length of 25x25mm aluminium box section in satin black (with plastic end caps) and mounted it at the same angle as the pedals (but 5mm closer to me) using double-sided body mounting tape to the plastic side panel. Now if I need to, I can slip my right foot off the footrest and onto the accelerator or brake pedal very easily. 4. Non-slip floor mats: My Mazda3 had better mats than the Model 3. Why? Because they had two plastic grommets at the rear which fitted over raised studs in the floor to stop them moving around. However, it's not that difficult to make your own from a couple of short 10mm bolts (with large flat washers and a black plastic end cap) and fit them into the carpet using double-sided body mounting tape and impact adhesive. Cut two holes in the mat and glue in a couple of grommets that are a push fit onto the end caps of the bolts. Top tip: to get the position right, fit the mat grommets first, then position the mat correctly in the footwell and mark the holes for the bolts.
Spot on re the pre-delivery clean. I bought black (because it's the best colour) & I know it's going to be a nightmare to keep, however I did expect it to be okay day 1. It wasn't. Pre-delivery clean was crap: dirty arches, dusty paint, water spot glass but the swirl marks on the paint were the real disappointing thing. Spent a day with my son washing & polishing it and by the end it was gorgeous but come on Tesla, this is your responsibility. BMW & Audi know how to handover a car in absolutely showroom condition & this is what is also expected from Tesla as a premium vehicle. Great videos keep up the good work Richard.

Great review. I love this car. Defo going to get one after I’m done with my Model 3! With regards to your sentry mode footage do you need to keep sentry mode on at all times to get the footage or does it record instantly should an event happen?
Probably the best review of the Model Y, it seems that I don't have to be concerned about enough space in my garage as I can just park it in the center console.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for discussing the headlights, that is not something that is often done by EV reviewers. I live in the US where it is below freezing temps for at least 4 months a year and wonder if you think the model Y is as good or equal to other EVs in cold weather for range. Got a good chuckle out of the center console storage, nice job.
Its amazing the storage capacity in the console.
Very good review indeed! Owning a 2021 MY since September and a 2022 MY since February I agree with pretty much all of it...and you are right yours comes with the LG 5L 79kWh of which around 75kWh are available above 0% and the rest for emergencies below. This is the battery pack for all Model 3 and Y in 2022 (except RWD and M3P for now). Outside the US market, obviously.

Another great review and very balanced. I’m sure that many of your criticisms can be addressed through software updates so I hope that Elon is one of your subscribers. There was talk a while back that someone had spotted future provision for either adaptive or air suspension on the Y. It would be a great selling point and I can see many people ticking that option box if it ever appears. As usual, the video is a cut above the rest and you’re not afraid to have a laugh. The Mary Poppins routine with the centre console was the icing on the cake for me.

This is a great review! Very funny & balanced! Your experience is similar to mine & I’ve owned my MYP for 7 months. Ride quality is subjective and I advise folks to test drive the various configurations & make their own choice. Tough to decide based on some else’s opinion. I had the Model X for a weekend and while the air suspension is nice, it’s likely to be more expensive in the Y or 3. In addition, it adds complexity which can result in higher cost and potential longer wait times to repair (if needed). I opt for simplicity and actually like a firm/sport oriented suspension. I lived in the UK for 3 years & drive in Barbados a couple times per year. I’d like to drive a right hand drive Tesla at some point😊
The centre console sketch made me laugh😂hope you can sort me out a Y for end of February. Best regards Martin
I saw the early reviews talking about the harsh ride. I opted for aftermarket 18" wheels. A big difference from the 19" wheels. A lot more rubber, and with a tad lower air pressure it actually handles small bumps much better.
Im used to the 2019 Model 3 SR+ (stock suspension sucks and i replaced it with a KW V3) so when i first got a ride in a Model Y, I was impressed how smooth the ride was and how little of the bumps were transferred into the cabin. I guess my standards regarding ride quality aren't that high.. :D
That did make me laugh out loud. Great Video.
Thanks Richard for this video and the others in the run up to the Y launch - I watched them all! I picked up my Model Y on Monday and I have to say that my experience is really negative and it appears I'm not the only one. I went from a Model 3 to this Y. I got the 19" wheels and the main issue is this booming, horrible low bass, resonating sound in the cabin which happens even at 10 mph. Something is vibrating and it's reverberating across the whole car. I've seen lots of posts from Model Y users all the way back to 2020 with the same problem. I posted a video on my channel about it - I'm absolutely not a KZreadr!! But it at least covers the point. I also recorded the DB levels in the car. Honestly what I've ended up with is not driveable beyond 30 minutes as my ears are dead by then.

They could just be opting for sporty suspension in the vein of BMW's design philosophy. But maybe that would change for their CUV model based on consumer feedback, who knows, I recall they did tweak it before after some customer feedback, back in 2017. Alternatively they could also just offer air suspension as an option down the road.

My wife's Model 3 (2018 model) is a fun and delightful car overall, but I have an issue with one thing: THE RIDE. As a child growing up in India (we have lived in the USA for 45 years now) I remember riding in BULLOCK CARTS. Well, I hate to say, the ride on our Model 3 is slightly reminiscent of those bullock carts!!! NOT THAT BAD for sure, but I have driven a variety of cars and Minivans and SUVs over the years, and ride on the Model 3 is the worst. We have a service scheduled next month (first service ever!) and we plan to ask for a thorough check of the suspension. From comments on KZread, I've heard that newer Teslas have a better ride. Ours has 18 inch wheels with regular all-season radials.
Great review!
Have they sorted the Bluetooth yet so you can have 2 phones connected? I have a work phone and a personal one and like to be able to answer whichever one rings. Couldn't do that in my model 3 but would hope they've brought the Y up to modern standard on that score.
My (US) Tesla Y came with Continental tyres. I’ve never been a big fan of them in the past (although I love their bicycle tyres)… I once had a SAAB 93 Aero that blew through a set (despite regular rotation) in under 15,000 miles. That said, I’m seeing good wear (8,000 miles so far). I chose the 19” wheels, on advice from my Tesla dealership, as it happens. I agree about the overly firm ride, but also agree that it’s probably necessary for handling purposes.
I thought that adjusting the headlight beams for driving in Europe was possible in the Service menu? I'm not sure if that's only available in the M3 or not, but certain I read about this somewhere?
I finally took the plunge and ordered an LR yesterday! Dark blue metallic, black seats, 19" wheels. I'd been holding out in the hope of getting a Berlin-built one - as much for the lower carbon footprint of shipping it as for the new casting or battery. But given the current state of the world and my own situation, I decided now was the time to go for it. Still. There are four months before the expected delivery, so you never know….
