Very useful video, Richard - thanks! For a fuel car/EV comparison, here are some real numbers from my Mazda3 Sport Maxx and the Tesla Model 3 SR+ which replaced it, using a conversion factor of 1L of petrol = 8.76 kWh of energy. The Mazda's 51L fuel tank when full held 447 kWh, and used 644 Wh/km, giving a range of 699 km, at a cost of 0.13 AU$/km. The Tesla's battery when full holds 53.6 kWh, and uses 132 Wh/km, giving a range of 406 km, at a cost of 0.02 AU$/km (charging overnight at home). This means the Mazda needs an energy capacity 8 x bigger to travel 1.7 times as far, and costing over 7 times as much per km driven. That says something about the efficiency of EVs, especially as the Tesla has almost twice the power (211 kW vs 114 kW).

Like yourself I don't follow miles remaining next to battery symbol I use the same trip miles last 5/15/30 graph that was on model 3. This I find very accurate but you do as you said keep flicking between map and graph map app, not really a problem just to flick over every know and then. The trip arrival graph is quite good and is mostly correct.

Good video. I'm always surprised by how much mileage can be wrung out of a Tesla at motorway speeds. They are slippery. Wonder what they're like when they are a bit dirty - real world.! I've made that same journey (but from Southampton) dozens of times over the years, to all points of Cornwall. I always note the viewing points as I go past them - for example, the Charborough Estate with the red brick wall and the gates with a lion and stag. First off does the lack of a rear wiper cause issues and secondly how distracting is it not having a speedo in front of you? Richard, I think your range average was 242 miles on a full charge According to what you said in the video, starting at 85% charging at 31% to 90% and getting home with 2%. That’s 142% of battery to go 344 miles. Did I do that correctly? It’s fine range, with 100kWh usage reported then the battery would be 70kWh + losses. Does that make sense, not familiar with the claimed usable for a Model Y LR.

Your efficiency of 296 W/mile or 384 W/mile (after charging losses of 10% ac to dc losses, 10% battery charge losses and 10% battery discharge losses). Using Octopus GO latest 7.5 p/kW would give a cost of around 2.9 p/mile. My M3 RWD gets 250 W/mile or 325 W/mile after all charging losses are taken into account and that equates to around 2.4 p/mile. Bear in mind an ICE car is probably 15 - 20 p/mile to run... It would be interesting to compare all EV's (VW, Audi, etc.) based on the kWh supplied to the car to get the car's real efficiency rather than use the onboard computer that may not be accurate...

@@RSEV My average from new is 281. But I’m not exactly driving as efficient as I could most of the time. Mainly because I have a charger at home, and a free charger at work. On road trips, however, I play the range game and I typically cruise at the exact posted speed limit which here in the states ranges from 100 - 105kph. It’s certainly not blazing speed, but I find it unnecessary to drive fast on the expressway. You only get to your destination marginally quicker but use significantly more energy. I took delivery on September 24th 2021 so most of my driving has been in colder weather. I’m super excited to see how my range will look as things warm up.

Leaving Model 3 unplugged for an extended period can also result in permanent Battery damage. If you are unable to charge Model 3 after attempting to jump start the low voltage battery, contact Tesla immediately." Li-ion batteries are happiest at 50% SOC but it would be impractical to keep it at 50% SOC. If you keep to the rule of under 20% charge asap and over 80% drive asap you'll be fine. LFP is more efficient. It’s incredibly so in fact. Can get up to 5 mi/kWh so in real world not far off same…

Still confused by this, that charge would of cost around £40-50 for 250 miles when a fiesta diesel costs 50 to fill up and gets 600 miles in a tank, in truly confused why people think this is a more cheaper option

Hi Richard, interesting video by the way..I'm still on the fence and still enjoying my 2019 Merc B200d AMG line but really would only have a Tesla if I won one on BOTB.. 😆which I do play for..Anyway, which one goes further in a real life scenario model Y long range or model 3 std range plus? Keep up the good work.. 👍

Interesting that a new Y isn't much more efficient than my old 2015 70D S. . I've generally average 305w/m , even in the cold. I'm in Honiton so like a bit of Ali's myself 😃😃😃😃

Wouldn’t that mean the model Y is more efficient because it has a larger frontal area therefore more drag but still gets about the same or even slightly lower consumption than your S?

The new V11 software is massively inferior to what was before. The only thing I like about it is the move towards customisation, but the options need to be much better. The seat warming move on it I hate, and the removal of the efficiency display I hate.

Don’t you find the Model Y noisy compared to the Model 3? Mine has a boom in the cabin that I just cannot remedy. I’m looking at buying a parcel shelf and or and some dynamat. If I had a spare £2k I’d have the professional sound deadening package installed at RSEV, however having just paid £56k for my Model Y, I’ll need to save up some more pennies.

Mine is fine but it does have the sound deadening. It’s quieter than the 3 and certainly no booming. Come and try it

@@RSEV Thank you for your reply and kind offer. I fear that if I visit the showroom and test drive your Model Y with the sound deadening I will end up leaving £2k lighter……😂 I would like to explore running the model Y with 18 inch wheels, I wonder if that might help improve the spine pummelling ride of the Tesla Model Y? Bjorn Nyland published a video where he ran a Y on Winrun R330 235/55R18 104 V XL tyres. A budget tyre, but he appeared positive to the experience!?

@@RSEV Interesting, because I have programmed LEDs for a robot, and because they are single frequencies (even though multiple colours), they play havoc with even expensive cameras. AFAIK , cameras have filters to make pics/films more appealing. But this is what Elon was talking about, when he said they were trying to get "the raw photons" , (ie unfiltered) which contain more information, for FSD..

I cannot consider this car until it is built in Germany. To support The Chinese government would make me feel morally bankrupt. I enjoy the freedoms of the west and cannot spend my hard earned money on anything that undermines that hard won freedom. To m3 it is similar to buying a Mercedes in 1937

Don’t be foolish. I enjoyed a nice lunch during a 30 minute stop and it was FREE. If you don’t like EVs, fine. It’s only your being defensive but no need to make such comments. Just don’t moan to us when you can’t drive due to fuel costs or when your exhaust or clutch or gearbox or turbo or dpf needs fixing. If can’t afford a new EV, fine. But again no need to write such superficial comment
