Tesla Model Y driven in the UK v M 3. Efficiency, range & in-depth review. (Dual Motor Long Range)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

#modely #model3 #tesla
We are very lucky to be the first in the UK to drive the Model Y Dual Motor Long Range and compare it side by side with the equivalent (also made in China) Model 3.
How does real world range and efficiency compare in real-world driving? (Not trying to be efficient at all!).
What is the space like for driver and passengers plus luggage? Is it much more practical?
Does it drive differently? Is it better?
Here, we find out!
Big thank to Oliver for driving it over. Check out his website: www.custom-tesla.com

I'm not a big car person, but I love good design and aesthetics. In my opinion I think the model Y might be just one of the most practical cars out there. I personally think it looks fantastic. The dimensions just look 'right' to me. I really think Tesla have hit the nail on the head with the model Y.

We love our 2021 model Y. If you have toddlers, the model y is a much more practical car compared to the model 3. In our 2019 model 3, the back door opening is smaller and lower so our kid knocks her head more often compared to when we take the model y. We also opted for the 7 seater version and the additional 2 seats have come in handy a number of times where we wanted to only take 1 car and were able to all squeeze in for a short ride.

The Lifetime status on my 2020 LR AWD (with Performance Boost) is 9010 miles and my wh/mi is 258 driven in the US mid-west so we experience all FOUR seasons and 3K+ miles were on long road trips. Very close to your numbers in the UK. We are considering trading to the 7 seater now that our grandkids are bigger and like road tripping with us. I lower my tire pressures to soften the ride and when we go on road trips we pump them up, seems to help on city streets, especially in cold temps.

We own 2 model ys. Have them in metallic grey and black with both 20inch wheels. 2021 has much better suspension and ride vs 2020. Not a flashy car but I think they look nice esp with anything but non aero wheels lol. It's just such a practical car with the hatch and higher ride height. As soon as they start lowering the price than it's just game over. These cars are still pricey but no regrets from me. Tesla is doing its job to mass market the y and 3 and as soon as Berlin and Texas opens up I think the cost will come down.

Excellent review! I totally agree, I owned a Model 3 LR AWD and the suspension feels a little harsh and unsophisticated, steering is unnecessarily quick, and terrible road noise. Although I have heard road noise has improved in newer models, mine was a 2019.

That small bit of higher energy usage could be chalked up to the sport wheels on the M 3. Although the tires might be the same, the wind aero efficiency might have caused a slight bit more drag resistance. Still amazing that an overall heavier vehicle with added insulation weight was still that close.

Seeing a Y in the flesh was one of the highlights of the show for me, almost pipping being there with the first family member I'd since since before the pandemic and being waylaid by Richard himself as we passed his stand. ;) Is it common for two similar cars making exactly the same journey to differ by 1.3 miles in their records of the stage mileage after only 140-ish miles?

Interesting to compare the efficiency of the Y with my smaller battery enyaq. I've been doing a regular circuit of mainly motorway driving for the last 4 days. It's 171 miles and the enyaq has had 70 miles left at the end of it. 3.8 miles per kWh has been easy to achieve. Smaller batteries seem to hit the sweet spot in terms of efficiency.

Assuming batteries are identical in reality (which they probably won't despite having the same kWh rating), it's most likely that the Y turned out to be more efficient because it slipstreamed more during that bit of the trip (ie if it was the rear car in the convoy). Or perhaps its the newer tires, but it's a minuscule difference anyway. Great stuff as always.

You know, I like what you did, good points... ...but I test drove the model Y and immediately chose the model 3 without driving it. The reason was that the high front of the Model Y is a show stopper for me. I like to see if there are children playing in front of my car. And also the M3 looks much, much cooler, not just more sporty, but a more elegant design. I get my model 3 LR white on white, FSD with winter rims/tires in May. So that will be my M3 test drive )).

The MYP is a blast to drive. The power and agility is absolutely brilliant. I have experienced the bumpy ride on bad roads, but it does fine on maintained roads. This is my first SUV and I normally drive high performance sports cars. I am more than satisfied with what the MYP delivers and hope Tesla creates a software track package with performance boost. A half a second quicker would make the MYP a monster.

I have a model 3 as a company car until March 2024. I’m hoping we’ll get Model Y in the UK by then (?), if so will go for a 7 seat LR

Model y looks a perfect family car. Unfortunately when it comes to the UK will be 50 grand plus for the long range.

Great to hear that the efficiency doesn't seem to much worse than the M3. Looks like it will be a fantastic buy. Or that plenty of M3 owners will switch and you can get a relative bargain on one. 🤞
