I can see, that you are not used to have snow. I have lived most of my life in Finland. Some winks: Items marked with* can be found in all petrol stations in snowy areas. 1. Keep your car clean. Cleaning snow from a dirty car is bad. 2. When temperature lowers near 0 C (freezing point), you must add special antifreeze* to window washing liquid. (Not the same as ICE cars use for cooling liquid). 3. First clean the roof of the car with a snow brush*. 4. Clean the windows with the brush and scrape ice from glas with the side of a flat strong piece of plastic*. 5. Brush the lower pats of the car clear of snow. 6. Door handles, locks, window wipers and such frozen parts can be melted with a plastic bag filled with hot water. Push it against the frozen part. 7. Clean carefully all cameras, sensors, and the radar.

For the door handles you can push on the skinny parts as that should get the fat part unstuck so you can use them like normal. Also the reason it used up 50 miles of range while heating the cabin is because it was also heating up the battery using the motors. Pulling around 7kw total, 3.5 kw for each motor, if you could, put on camp mode so it won’t heat up the battery and not use up range. Battery will heat up using waste heat from motors while driving anyways.

We live in the Colorado mountains and have 1000+ miles experience on nasty hair-pinned snow-bound back roads in our Y. We've never needed slip start. Off-road Assist is excellent and gives great confidence. It limits the torque and the pedal isn't nearly as touchy. We use it 100% of time whenever under 30 mph on snow covered roads. If you don't use Off-road Assist then traction control actually works against you and you can get a little sideways.

Love your cheerful and engaging style. Good insights. The same storm that hit you in Asheville clobbered us in Wisconsin, too. Rain followed by snow is the worst. This is my first winter in a Model Y, so lots to learn. I just pounded on the door handles to free them up, but I like the hot-water-in-a-bag idea that the Finnish guy posted. After I got the door handles free, though, the bigger problem was the windows. I only pre-warmed my car for a few minutes, so the windows were still frozen. The window frames require that the window roll down an inch or so, but that didn’t happen, so . . . I just had to wait another 15 minutes for the windows to melt free. Late for the doctor’s appt, but oh well. I made the same observations as you - cold, icy, road-grime, slushy climates are going to be a challenge for Tesla FSD and robo-taxis. I bought some Rust Oleum rain repellent to try on the door handles and cameras. I also am buying snow tires. The tesla four-wheel drove works well, but it’s not as good as a Subaru, so I’m getting winter tires to max out the Tesla’s winter capabilities. Subaru has the best four-wheel drive, so it’s the gold standard for me - I’m curious to see if winter tires will allow the Tesla to match it.

Winter conditions are hard for cars, many ICE cars do have lots of standard cold winter and snow features, like automatic side mirror heating, headlights spraying system, front and rear windshield heating, heated spray system on the front windshield and so on. Here in the northern part of Europe these conditions are also not uncommon but Tesla is doing very well over here. I hope Tesla will upgrade their cars with these winter features.

I enjoyed your video but as a Northerner myself, I am surprised you didn't do what I've seen other Northerners do when caught in a freak snow storm with underlying ice and that is to drive it to a car wash to wash off the snow and ice build up. Since you were going on the road, for quite a drive, getting the car wet in a washing would not have been an issue. Car washes tend to use warm or hot water and even blow your car dry. If you are ever caught in another surprise snowstorm, Consider This.

Just FYI, when AP is on and you have two blue lines over the lane lines in the vidualization, it means you have autosteer and traffic aware cruise control but NOT navigate on autopilot. The car will not automatically change lanes, or take exits or any of that. It will only change lanes if you tell it to. Navigate on Autopilot will draw a single blue line in the middle of the lane and when it's on, it'll actually navigate automatically and suggest lane changes to maintain speed or to line up with an upcoming exit and stuff.

you can see the heating elements for the cameras in the windshield if you look closely. the ultrasonic sensors do not have heaters, the radar is heated. Do a google search on how to open the doors in ice and snow. if low temps are common in winter, winter tires are a godsend. I wouldn't use slipstart on ice, it defeats the wheels auto-antislip controls. Do you plan on getting a home charger?

For robo-taxi cars, cold weather sensor protectors would seem extremely important. I guess the ice covered sensors need a defroster on them. Maybe little wipers when it rains, with water to squirt mud off, lol. I read somewhere, nasa or somebody developed lasers to clean Martian dust from solar panels, be really neat to have that for sensors on Tesla cars ! It would also insure people up north have robo-taxi service in the winter, when it becomes available.

The car does drive differently when it notices the roads are wet/snow/slush/ice. There are also behaviors baked in already to prevent issues with losses of traction. For example, when approaching an intersection the car always tests the traction on the road to judge stopping distance.

No glove... you want to warm it up and just press it enough to crack the ice around the long skinny handle... because there is where the ice has all the leverage against you pressing on the short fat half. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z5WZz86DYbS2cZM.html&ab_channel=PureTesla The doors get frozen like that at least a dozen times each season. Pouring water is a bad idea, will seep in and just freeze while you are driving. I also turn off mirror auto-fold every winter, because they occasionally get stuck.

I have done this when i have been trips in snowy weather and road are covered in slush which covered the vehicle to the point of not being able see out well. Has no one in the US learned to drive in the winter? First clean the car from snow and ice with a brush and ice scraper so that all snow is gone then start heating from the inside. Of course, do not use the atoumat opening for the tailgate without first clearing the lid on the outside from snow. Clean all mirrors and cameras with snow brush and ice scraper. When all this is done the heat from inside will melt all remaining in a few minutes. Scary to see how amateurishly this was filmed. Furthermore, there is a fold/unfold mirror button you can press in the settings. Also, it's just called navigate on autopilot. You don't have navigate on autopilot unless you own EAP or FSD. You also don't need slip start unless you are well and truly stuck. You can also enable/disable slip start while driving. Winter operation is a little different in a car designed in California. The radar will ice up and become nonfunctional. Roads that have been deiced with salt or other chemicals have a slush which freezes at below 32 deg. But will freeze on your front bumper and radar from evaporation. Of course wet snow will do the same. To keep your AP functional you will have to deice the radar. Keep a snow brush in the car at all times. Under poor conditions it can freeze up and fail every few minutes. A big splash from a truck will do it instantly. Get in the habit of cleaning your cameras frequently. Be sure to include the backup camera. The radar will see through things you can't and track the car ahead better than you can. Latter versions of AP seem to turn off more in bad bad visibility than before. Another issue is regen braking. When the battery is cold you won't have any. If you are used to it and don't notice it's gone you will hit things. There are times in adverse conditions when coasting is the safest way to negotiate ice. Remember when regen is active it applies the "brakes" which is not what you want when you are trying to coast. This might be mitigated by Tesla's stability system but it it hard to tell. I reduce pedal carefully under slippery conditions. If you are iced up go through a car wash. Extra energy is your best friend in adverse conditions. Don't get stuck and run out of heat. Same is true in Death Valley A/C is life. Get a flat on a back road without cell coverage and you could have a bad day. These cars don't have jacks or spares. A little tire pump (I have one by Milwaukee) and a can or two of flat fix might save the day. Preheating the car and battery on shore power (30-60 minutes) will enable regen braking and save range. Also navigating to a supercharger will preheat the battery for best charge speed. Conversely don't allow preheat if you are range limited. You have less range in the cold, I charge to a higher limit in the winter and use 100% if really necessary. I also plan for extra margin if the weather is really bad and even stop in for a little range boost charge at a supercharger. I would like enough to overnight in the car if necessary. (never done it so far) I would drive with extra fuel in the gas days. I am a pilot I take fuel seriously. In aviation there have been many disasters that could have been avoided by just a little planning. I am a proponent of good tires at all times and good winter tires in the winter. You have to be able to stop quicker than the guy in front of you. You won't do that on poor tires. They are not cheap but a small price to pay to preserve life. The Tesla S & Y are both good winter cars.

@@DrKnowitallKnows most of the time i use summon to drive from my garrage, but sometimes i do it "the old way", then i have to fold my mirrors to not scratch them. quick tap on voice control button to fold it, then again to unfold it, easy way to do it when you need to pay attention on the road. pro tip: you can fold your mirrors while driving but only if your speed is below 50km/h (about 30 mph)

There is also an “unfold” button below the mirror adjust button that you can use to manually unfold them

Welcome to Sweden. Like... basic winter here. That is why i like a properly built car, like our Volvo. Just grab the handle and pull and you are in. And the tailgate has actually never had any issues with weight on it (must be very weak motors in a Tesla). Things just... work... And i have used 2WD cars for over a decade without any special issues.

I know you are being sarcastic and all cars will have these problems. Except for the doorhandles. They are really not well designed for cold climates. I struggle with this on my m3 in Norway. Fortunately the Frozen door mirrors problem is easily avoided by just turning off the automatic folding. I had to do this on my Volvo too. The Volvo also had adaptive cruise control using a radar and it would constantly get blocked from ice and sleet in the winter.
