Tesla Model Y - 19" vs 21" wheels: The moment of truth!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I'm testing the difference in consumption, range and noise between 19" wheels and the 21" Überturbines.
- How much range do you really loose?
- Is 21" more noisy than 19"?
- Is it worth the difference?

I dumped the 21” UT from my 2022 PMY and replaced them with some 18s with 245/50s squared from TSportLine. Made a significant improvement in ride, noise, efficiency and performance. And I no longer fear curbs or pot holes. Tesla should off this option again.

Btw, yesterday I swapped from the Nokian R5 (21" winters) to the PZ4Z 21" summers. Did not do any range or efficciency tests, but I do notice the car was more silent on R5. Most likely its due to the softer winter rubber, but I have the same size: 275/255 on 21. So the difference in "comfort" might be smaller on the 21". I also think the Nokian R5 have less stretch on the rims than the PZeros.. The summer tires should be said: need a bit warm temp for the rubber to be soft enough, so start of summer you will also get a bit more noise.

Just to add. - 21" offers better traction in addition to the looks. 21" comes with high performance wider tires. - Not all tires are created equal. The tires from different manufacture/models will change the results even for the same tire/wheel size. Look for rolling resistance rating to estimate impact on energy consumption.

The Uber turbine tires are crazy expensive! I replaced the back tires at 22,000 miles after 9 months of driving and cost me 1100 bucks! Presently, I now have 41,000 miles and the back tires needed replacing again. As a result, I decided to go with 19 inch Gemini wheels and all season continental tires ( low resistance) and so far I am at 251 wh/ mile compared to 277 wh/ mile with the Uber turbine wheels. Here in Florida the roads are like sandpaper! Much cheaper to replace 19 inch tires and more selection of tires! The Uber turbines are the best looking though! Great review. Subscribed 😊

I did however for fun try to fit the 10.5 rear wheel in the front position yesterday, it seemed to fit. I did not drive with it, but seems 10.5" wheels fit fine in front. Hey! I like your channel! Thanks for the content! Question! I've got a MY Long Range on order but I'm thinking about buying a pre-owned (kinda low milage) 2022 Performance instead for basically the same price. Upsides are parking sensors, performance and included 21" winter tires (can be expensive tbh). My fear is that the ride comfort will be worse than MYLR 2023. I understand that 21" has an effect on ride comfort but what about the suspension itself? Is it much worse? My wife *hated* the 2021 MYLR (before they upgraded suspension) because of its suspension.

I have tried the updated suspension on both the LR and the P and my experience is that the biggest difference is the wheel size.

@@ItsOnlyElectric Yes, I reduced overall weight on the wheels by 10kgs per wheel by going for semi forged light rims and low weight tyres. Total kgs per wheel is 21 kgs, the 21" uberturbines weigh about 31.3 kgs. (Rim+tyre). So the moment of inertia is less. The tyres have good drainage for water/melted ice which helps also. The aerodynamics of the rim design is also very important, but the biggest factor is wheel weight.
