DEFINITIVE: Tesla Model Y Wheel Size and Range Loss (TESTED)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video examines the Tesla Model Y range loss in comparing the 20" factory induction wheels and the 19" Gemini factory wheels. This test uses two identical Tesla Model Y's on an identical course traveling at the same time. This is the definitive real world answer you are looking for with respect to one of the most asked Tesla and EV questions: does wheel size matter.

The purpose of this video is to compare the factory available wheel options at the time of ordering a Tesla Model Y. Tesla has never published the range delta between the factory wheel options (unlike the Model S and X). Most owners will use the wheels that they paid for at the time of purchase. Sure, there are 3rd party wheel and tire combinations that will produce different results (e.g. due to weight, rolling resistance, etc.). However a 3rd party wheel or tire comparison is out of scope for this video. Perhaps I will do this in a follow up video if there is enough demand. Cheers.

Hey, awesome vid. Quick question, I am in the process of getting 19" winter tires and rims. Does is it matter which 19" rims I buy to mount the winter tires on? There are Tesla OEM aftermarket alloy wheels (copies) that I can buy at $250/each or buy any other 19" rims from other manufacturers that look far better and cost slightly more with the same bolt pattern? I have a 2023 Y LR with the 19" Gemini wheels with the hubcaps. I will not be able to use the hubcaps on the other manufacturer rims which I know will knock off some range but it's a small price to pay for having sexy wheels. Thanks.

Probably the difference in distance recorded is from his deviation. I would rather trust the kWh consumed vs. the rated consumptions then. This would result in 9.6/9.1=1.055, so only 5.5 % more range for the 19". Based on 525 km rated range for the 19" the 20" would get 497 km, 28 km less.

you got about what Tesla (or really the EPA) predicts for the difference in range between the two tires. So- no real surprise. I'd think that for most people, the only time range is an issue is during a long trip, usually highway speeds of 75-80mph. Given that air resistance is the primary driver of drag, I'd expect that the high speed difference is a bit less than mixed driving distance. ???

Some Tesla owners or perspective owners are obsessed with range. This. may not be you, but don't assume it isn't important to others.

@@ElectricCanuck That may be true but I like performance in 0 to 60 mph and 0 to 100 mph that’s what I like I’m not concerned that much with range even though mine will go around 300 miles on a charge I’ve never had to experience running out of electrons

It’s close. To be fair. If I use auto pilot on follow distance 1 vs 3 I lose about 6-7% efficiency on average due to slip stream. If you by nature follow a car more or less close then your wife. Or follow a truck and the other follows a car the wh results could change DRAMATICALLY. I followed a truck all the way to work the other day seeing if I could get below 100 - similar distance to your test… and got 98 wh/km over 55km. I average 139wh/km in my RWD California built model 3.

This video is a good start but it would be 10x more credible if he swapped the wheels and showed similar results - it’s basic variable control
