Tesla Inverter Review

Solar Surge will teach you all about being energy independent and how to set up your home to run off-the-grid during an emergency. We empower families to take control of their energy generation and storage so that they will never be left in the dark without electricity.
In this video, Joe reviews the newly-announce Tesla solar inverter. In the past, Tesla used third-party inverters from SolarEdge and Delta. Now, Tesla is brining the inverter manufacturing in-house. The units come in 2 sizes: 3.8kW and 7.6kW.

    Didn't really cover the specs of the Tesla inverter, of which 4 MPPT trackers is unique to the Tesla inverter. With 4 strings, that covers all but the most complex shading. Also, disappointing to see the myth about shade on single panel affecting all other panels in the string. That was true 15+ years ago when panels didn't have bypass diodes, and MPPT wasn't a thing. In shading, the diodes in the shaded panels conduct and allow the full current flow to the unshaded panels. You only loose the shaded panel, or more typically the 1/3 of the panel that is shaded (most panels are divided in 1/3, with 3 bypass diodes). This is only a challenge when the shading is such that the diodes can't fully conduct, but MPPT tracking forces them to do so. Multiple panel shading can also cause this, but SMA ShadeFix goes to address. Check out kzread.info/dash/bejne/haFksMeJgrq8abw.html for a better explanation - mid-way through or so.

    @@sandyfordd1843 I had a similar need for 4 strings (32 high-voltage SunPower panels - can only do 8 per string). Same roof face in my case. I wired as two strings direct (MPPT A and B), and the other 2 combined in parallel (MPPT C). The parallel strings see no shade, where the other two others do: a hot water tank exhaust stack on one, and a plumbing vent on the other. Works well on a 3 channel SMA Sunny Boy, and you can look at the V/A/W for each channel. Looking at all 3 channels, I can totally see at a point in the day when the pipes cast shade that the one channel gets dropped down a bit in voltage as parts of the panels become blocked. But only that, the other panels aren't limited in that string - unlike the myth.

  • @Nicetrybrobro
    @Nicetrybrobro Жыл бұрын

    Good video overall but as some people have already very well said, the myth of shading affecting all in that string is simply not true on the Tesla inverter. In fact, tesla is one of the few inverters that allow for 4 MPPT channels for the larger 7.6kW inverter set up. Tesla installers when testing the system will generate individual outputs per string as well, not visible on the app for simplicity but that data is all there. Sure, there is no individual panel info but that is a bit unnecessary anyway as the average solar user will not be monitoring individual panel output. End of the day, this inverter is fantastic, up to date, and unique. Plus the added water cooling is nice vs the other brands that use just air cooling or no fan and only conductive. Anyway, good video but not fully accurate when it comes to giving tesla the credit it deserves for the technology inside the inverter.

    @@Chris-ie9os There is actually a bit of something extra with ShadeFix over just general shade mitigation with native panel diodes and native inverter MPPT. Formerly known by SMA as OptiTrac Global Peak, ShadeFix is an algorithm which can find an alternate maximum power point in the IV curve. This can happen when you have multiple panels shaded. Normal MPPT algorithms will just hover around the one point, and not realize there is another point in the curve that is higher power output. The challenge is every time you need to do a full scan to realize this, the power output is reduced. SMA will only do this full scan at particular times it thinks it is needed, and it also does it very fast. Don't know if it is patented, but there is a bit of strategy to their unique approach. Some detail here, in addition to the other video mentioned in my other comment. www.sma-america.com/partners/knowledgebase/optitrac-global-peak.html

    That is exactly the strategy - Elon doesn't aim to be a Rockefeller and control for control's sake. Rather, given the chaotic nature of US capitalism (ie the inability to organise the public sector efficiently) he tries to create the lowest cost path - eg re-organising solar permitting is improved by supplying an integrated, three sizes fits all, solar system - which means he winds up doing everything and becomes the 21st century Rockefeller by default - hopefully the power doesn't go to his head!

    Let's set the bar of this conversation. Tesla and NASA. When NASA puts a rover on a planet they do not put that machine our there with 2020 hardware, it's put out there with proven reliable hardware. Tesla is doing the same thing and it's allowing this company to keep the price lower for everyone that is trying to get solar into their homes. With Tesla approach to solar, panel optimizers are paired with the use of batteries to allow for the best power flow for daily charging in all environments. Now with Tesla own inverter they can move forward with a system that will communicate with panels and Powerwalls going forward.

    Great video Joe. One minor mispeak - the Large option uses a large and a small inverter not two smalls. I have placed an order with them and gone through an unnecessary round of friction and re-design because they did not let me know up front about the anti home-solar regulations in place in my state, Florida. There is a punitive liability insurance requirement if you go beyond 10kW of generation or 11.76kW of solar array. It breaks the economics for a larger array. The excuse is that you are now in the energy production business as a Tier-2 provider and a danger to utility staff and plant because you are grid tied. I had to step down from the 16kW XL size. I indicated that on Monday of last week to my Tesla project manager and told him that I wanted a specific area left free on the roof for me to place a planned off-grid array in the future. Eight business days have gone by with no reply. Guess I am getting what I paid for. I suspect that as an informed customer who isn't going to bowing down to worship Elon in the shadow of my solar array, I don't fit the profile. The relatively poor efficiency would be offset by how cheap it is to "go big" but in many states, regulation will stop you. I am surprised that Tesla haven't come up with a creative solution to the problem, like offering the insurance for example, or setting some element up as off-grid. I think they may need to because there are a lot of customers like me who wanted XL and had to downsize.
