    You are VERY good at presenting information. I just had a system installed (by Solarponics) that uses the SolarEdge unit and it seems very good. The company that did the installation is probably the oldest in my area in this business. "Oldest" doesn't always mean best if they don't keep up with technology. But this outfit has a reputation for keeping up with "state of the art" and they use SolarEdge. I have an electronic engineering background myself but didn't really know that much about the solar game. I know more now. And I like the SolarEdge approach. The monitoring is superb. Of course, it will be ten or twenty years until I can get back to you on reliability.

The only thing I wish you would have mentioned is how the hybrid inverter is a pass through inverter as well. In our case we're also going to be testing using wind generation for the input of the generator.

    Many thanks for this introduction, Joe! Your videos have been very helpful and i've learned quite a lot. I'm in the midst of planning my PV upgrade for this home, and was initially going to stay away from the SolarEdge inverters bc they didn't do everything I needed. However it appears as though the Energy Hub finally supports AC coupling my current (legacy) string inverter / array, so I wouldn't lose the use of it during a grid-down event. I've a question, though. If I wanted to, instead of AC coupling my current inverter / array, just move the entire string connected to my current inverter over to the Energy Hub, is that supported? In other words, i'd have, say, 4kw of PV connected to the Energy Hub on one MPPT, and have the current 3kw legacy string connected to another MPPT?

My min bill now will be about 90.00 before using 1 watt of power. I want to make sure I am understanding you correctly -- you're saying that if you oversize your PV system to be 200% of the capacity of the inverter, say use a 15kW DC system with a 7.6kW Inverter + batteries, the inverter can actually make full use of the PV to simultaneously convert ~7.6kW DC into usable AC power for your home AND charge your DC batteries? It can do both at the same time? Thanks for your answer.

    Hi, is this a good unit for the following purpose: All I care about is using the batteries during peak times. I.e., any excess production by the panels goes into the batteries, and then at peak times, instead of going to the grid to get the energy, go to the batteries. I'm not really worried about "the grid going down". Or is the cheaper non-energy hub inverter sufficient? Thx.

  • @SolarSurge

    Do different SolarEdge inverters provide more energy than others? I've been dealing with my dead SolarEdge SE7600A inverter with StorEdge since January. My installer just put in a used HD Wave inverter as a loaner, as they've been having trouble getting a replacement for the one I had. Since they've installed the loaner, I've noticed that production seems much higher than my old inverter if I look at full sun days of the same date in history. Unfortunately I can't actually see the monitoring for the loaner as it's not hooked connected that way. But I do have consumption/production data from my old Enphase IQ7 system on a smaller system previously installed. It shows me the total exported kwh through my meter connection. If the newer style inverter truly provides more production, I'm going to try and get them to replace the old one with one of these. Even though I had the StorEdge component included in the system when it was installed in 2018, I never got batteries. Do I need to worry about that any longer since most battery systems now seem to manage that themselves? I guess it would only matter if I was getting a DC coupled battery system. Still confused in Southern California.

  • @SolarSurge

    @SolarSurge

    Hi Nick. My understanding is that SolarEdge discontinued the StorEdge and replaced it with the new Energy Hub using HD Wave technology. I would definitely take the upgrade. I was one of the first guys installing StorEdge on the east coast going back to 2017. I had so many problems and so many costly service calls trying to get that unit to work properly with LG batteries. Ultimately, LG recalled the batteries. It was a combo doomed to fail.

My true-up bill comes next month and I won't be able to offset much of the big bill.

    Hey Joe, maybe you can help. My installer doesn't seem to have a clue. We have a 3.8Kw SolarEdge new inverter that is controlling a 4.1kW array for the pool pump. Any excess power is fed back through the subpanel to power anything else in the house that needs power. It is fairly remote and far downstream from the generator, making it not only impractical if not impossible to attempt to connect the whole house generator to this inverter directly - instead the standby 20kW genset is connected to a 400 amp ATS, which flips when the grid is down. It starts the generator and then transfers from grid power to genset. The generator is then powering the house, and feeding power to the subpanel where the SolarEdge is connected. Will this Solaredge damage my generator or visa-versa due to the generator not delivering a pure and perfect grid-type sine wave? Is there a setting inside the Solaredge for alternative power sources or some other setting I need to change to make this device get along with my 20kW standby generator?

  • @SolarSurge

    @SolarSurge

    2 жыл бұрын

    Good questions here. This installation should never have been done this way. The SolarEdge grid-tied inverter should never be installed downstream from the generators. The SolarEdge should be tapped to the utility service only ABOVE the 400-amp ATS. With your current configuration, it's possible for the SolarEdge to backfeed into the generator, potentially damaging the generator. I suggest you set your generator to manual start and be sure to turn off the SolarEdge unit before firing up the gen.

    not really, when on grid you can run nominally and do energy arbitrage. In a grid down situation you can put a input of 3kw or less to the vehicle (this also depends on driving habits) but if stated here and over dv volt you can have the possibility in the day to do more. You would also need a cut off for a set limit for the battery as well. This helps with your car controlling amp input/ or the charging unit. I run my tesla to charge at 1kw since I dont do much driving and it works nominally for me if you drive example 200 miles a day this could work if in the southern portion of the usa. but if in the northern states your solar would need to be larger.

For example, the consumer has on-peak, off-peak, and super off-peak pricing at $0.56, $0.36, and $0.09 respectively & consumes $750kwh in a month. So theoretically, arbitrage might save something on the order of $125 in a month. The question is... is it possible? Or are panels required for such a system?

    What you are asking for is possible. Tesla Powerwall is probably your best bet for an non-solar rate arbitrage system. Please schedule a call via the website if you need a quote.

    If only Solaredge was reliable and had good customer service. When it needs service and it will expect to be on the phone for over a hour waiting for customer service. When and if a grid down event occurs pray your Solaredge equipment is working cause replacements take months

    Not understanding the comment about only the LG batteries. Wouldn't it, like most inverters these days, have a custom configuration menu for arbitrary lithium setups? I ask because the commercial battery sellers - Victron, Battleborn, etc. are milking the market big time with their pricing. BMS's are no longer a big deal, and some of the independent ones are as high a quality as Tesla, LG, anyone.

  • @SolarSurge

    These batteries require a proprietary communication between the inverter and the battery. Most modular batteries (e.g. Battle board, et.) don't support the communications protocol.

    @@SolarSurge Ok. So basically, Solaredge inverters are unusable unless one buys the specific battery they support. Too bad because I like the incorporation of the car charging logic.

    You can do it with the LG's, plus with the new inverters this quarter you can do 11k peaks with the battery and stack them.

    Phew those 7.5kw aren't enough I guess. Better to go with a setup which can put all 15kw into the grid if u don't need any power yourself and your battery is full
