Tesla FSD 12 Recognizing Hand Signals?!

Ғылым және технология

Does FSD finally recognize hand held stop signs and hand signals given by roadway workers? I tested this in an actual functioning construction zone with traffic being diverted wrong way and witnessed some impressive results!
What are your thoughts on this?

You should do that like 3 more times

The first construction worker had a sign that said STOP on one side and SLOW on the other side. The car started moving when the sign was turned from STOP to SLOW. The car may or may not have reacted to the hand signals. They may be training it for construction zones, but I think this was half luck, half training.

If this behavior (choosing a path based on pedestrian hand gestures) is in the training data, another question: how do you avoid random people on the street basically steering your car the wrong way down a one-way street? This issue probably solves itself, because human drivers don't really just follow random pedestrian hand waves, so the model would only behave this way in a situation involving traffic cones, high-visibility vests, a hard hat, etc.

Yeah but there are many areas of the country that seem to be under perpetual construction that dont have flag wavers, so if im driving by an area thats marked for sidewalk construction and someone waves to me at an intersection how would it account for that. Let alone if its late in the day and the natural light source places the reflective vest between me and it.

And if you’re in a robotaxi, can’t intervene and criminals are directing it to an area that they want it travel to

Yes indeed. Now they have to fix unprotected Left turns. Still an issue with 12.3.6

It will more or less always be an issue in some places, whenever we have human drivers and cars that cannot communicate with each other. Multi-lane UPL turn is a very dangerous concept, that often can be avoided by just a little of rerouting and even not necessarily longer drive, as you would not need to wait for the traffic to stop. You just save a bit of fuel for the price of safety. And with the electric cars, energy cost might be secondary in this equation. So I assume autonomous vehicles would just avoid those super-dangerous cases, and just go around them. Like many drivers do.

@@Kaipiso You can *assume* whatever you like, and *hope* that Tesla eventually fixes the simpleton Level 2 FSD. Today, FSD is nowhere even close to a human driver. It makes mistakes every day

@@DerekDavis213 Humans make mistakes every day, killing other humans. Neither Waymo nor FSD does that. So I guess you are right, they are nowhere close.

“How about we finally address the ongoing problem of phantom braking that’s resulted in people getting killed.” “No, let’s teach the car to recognize hand signals so that any asshole that sees a Tesla driving down the road can have Jedi powers to force the car and its occupants to veer off in to a ditch or maybe even off a cliff.”

You make a good point. Phantom braking ought to be the priority.

@@DerekDavis213 it’s absolutely terrible. I’ve learned mostly when to expect it, but the other day my 2023 M3P slammed on the brakes full fucking force for zero reason. There was no unprotected intersection, no break in the roadway paint lines, no changes in speed limit, no curve in the road. No other vehicles around me. Nothing. It was by far the most aggressive and surprising thing it’s ever done. The seatbelt actually hurt my chest. I was traveling about 70mph. If someone had been within a few car lengths behind me I would have been rear ended for certain
