I'm glad that this guy explained what drag coefficient is. Most people think that it's simply wind resistance or parasitic drag. The drag coefficient of a 747 is less than half that of the Cyber Truck but it has far more drag due to its size and that it is designed to create lift. Unfortunately, the Cyber Trucks claimed drag coefficient of 34 (38 tested) isn't as great as many make it out to be. It's better than a Hummer or an old F150 by a country mile. But it's pretty much in line with a new Chevy Silverado and not too far behind a Dodge Ram and Toyota Tundra. A good marketing department will make people believe anything without question.
12:59 Tesla has said that in the up position it improves aero slightly on that side of the truck. The reason it rests in the down position when intermittent is active, is because it's better to fling the water up and away from the vehicle (off the driver's side edge) than it is to push it down onto the frunk hood, which would just cause the air movement to push it back up on the windshield since there is no channel for it to go into like a normal car has.

Did you take out the mirror frontal area reduction in the equation? Same for the lowering the car? Frontal area get smaller and their correction factors for the tunnel should also change...
For the wiper, the overall drag on the vehicle may not be a large change when it is up or down. However, the air resistance on the wiper horizontal is more force on the wiper motor and joint components than when the wiper is vertical. Less stress on components over time is best, which is why design is to have vertical normally.
@frozencold199
2 ай бұрын
wind noise is also a factor, interrupting the airflow even by a low percent might cause vibrations and low frequency hums in the cabin, thats another reason why they probably perfer to have it vertical

According to an interview with Hans, I believe, the vertical wiper actual helps downstream drag as it wraps around the vehicle. It helps more understandably at highway speeds.

Great effort on the whole thing! Most surprising was WITHOUT the side mirrors ... on other vehicles I've year 5%-7% 'MPG'. It is virtually no difference without the side mirrors on the CT.
@dirkbester9050
2 ай бұрын
MPG is a different unit though. Power to push through a fluid increases with velocity cubed. So no matter how miniscule the drag change, you can find a speed where you are looking at a large power difference, AKA MPG difference. Drag numbers here are not the same units as MPG and you need to multiply by the speed factor and cross section etc. to get the effect it has on total power or fuel consumption. So on a dumb California "highway" at 55 to 65mph you will have a smaller MPG effect than say 85mph in the Texas panhandle.

Since Tesla has those non radised edges that are creating huge vortices, it seem like a ' fix ' would be to install air fences like you see on the sides of semi truck windshields. ( They look like a spoiler tilted sideways ) Tesla could have kept the blocky look, but angled the A pillars to direct flow around there better. I'm puzzled why they chose not to.

Oke this is cool and interesting thanx .....but now seeing this make me think this.... : if you want to make the drag les with that tailgate open (witte a lot of low stuf in it ) would it make sense to flip / hinge that strip of Metal Up ( wich the cover retreacts under ) like a small spoiler so the air would flow up and over the open bed and comes down behind the tailgate..... In my mind not that hard to do and would it reep the benefits?? If so its a good small improvement
I love it !

Great video very informative. I’ve been to A2 a couple times testing race cars I’ve been a part of. They’re great people and it’s a useful resource. But a simple tunnel like A2 has limitations, especially for low ground clearance racing cars that generate downforce from the under body. To accurately measure underbody downforce requires a rolling belt tunnel like they use a Wind Sheer, but that tunnel is massive $$$ and booked up for months or even years with pro racing teams. BTW, how much did it cost to run the Cybertruck in A2?
13:37 I mean... it's a truck. But how does it compare to the Rivian (0.30?) or the F150's (0.44?) drag? (nevermind, I googled it)
You should look into laminar control on your smoke
For the mirror drag coefficient, did you change the size of the face?
cool to see but to be fair i don't think it is very telling along the sides of the truck due to the small size of the wind tunnel the air flow along the outside is much slower then the center especially with everyone standing on that same side. You would need a wind tunnel approx, twice the diameter for proper laminar flow along the sides of the truck.
Do my eyes,see 3m color shift deep space? Sure looks like it.
Great video. Can you share the info on the Wrap? brand/color? Thanks!!!
A question.... There's a ladder rack mount just above the tonneau release button. (and towards the peak) Would some some kind of spoiler mounted across those points be effective? (Either the truck on it's own, or when towing?)
Don't expect the side mirrors to change the drag coefficient much since the big gain comes from the reduction in frontal area. Unless you didn't account for that reduction, in which case the drag coefficient reduction is overstated. I would like to see the same test done on a golf ball dimpled CT. Maybe shoot one up, speed dimples make it go faster.
Nice one!
I would love to see the Rivian tested in this same wind tunnel with similar configurations so we have compatible numbers. I think the Rivian would be the most interesting since it is the only EV truck with a lower coefficient.

The thing is many different shapes would improve drag significantly....but does it look good is the question. Function over form or form over function...need to hit a good balance for both.
I think the vertical wiper had an effect similar to winglets on an aircraft avoiding "spill" over the edge and reducing the vortex?
how about wind test a gas car and see the difference between manufacture number and this wind tunnel to see if the difference between both is the same.
Nice Aerostar
I am sure some entrepreneur is going to make some add-on kits for the CT to make it more aerodynamic, especially the front and rear and something to address the turbulence around the sharp edges facing upward
10:55 can you ride with the front lower and the back higher? or do both halves have to be the same height?

Nice video and presentation. Test with smoke stream give us qualitative experience and not qualitative data. We do smoke trail test in wind tunnel for the lack of understanding in aerodynamics and by association with these test as such gave us a cool appearance in front of those who also don’t understand the subject. To turn that around and show we do understand the science try to reconfigure the test w/wo blowing smoke. Example? Reconfigure the test from vehicle wheels resting on floor to resting on frictionless linear bearing glide rails. Attach a strain gauge (newton or kg scale) between vehicle and a test ground. The reading is the net drag caused by the wind and vehicle shape. Experiment? Record the force in a stick configuration and change something deviate from stock condition to see difference in drag for a qualitative analysis. Hope this helps Next, Poor man’s wind tunnel alternative for quantitive data? The same test may be set up without a wind tunnel. You’ll need to decide safely factors before conducting it. Attach the strain gauge between the vehicle under test and a tow truck or a second cyber truck, both on a quiet and smooth lane without traffic. The reading is the total drag including aerodynamic and rolling drag. Record a base line force then proceed with configuration deviation to learn the cause and effect. Caveat? Turbulence of tow vehicle may cause some bias in data. Alternative? Use push instead of tow. Proceed with caution. Thanks for reading.
