Chain Guillotines, Bananarangs, and Shadowflame Knives still work well against Twins, Queen Slime, or Prime For the Destroyer, usually a tank setup works better than an offensive setup since you can attack with the blade part of many weapons, or just stand still and tank with either Fetid or Dao of Pow. With the offence setup, you can probably still take a few laser hits while being just outside of Destroyer's hurtbox (especially with cross necklace, kb immunity, and buffs) and deal good damage with Dao or Fetid, but the safer and thus longer-taking options would be the Shadowflame Knives, Flying Knife, or Sergeant United Shield.

I must be missing something. What the hell is the base damage if most of the attack methods so a percentage of it?

It is the only great melee weapon before the mechanical bosses. The rest of the weapons are very bad, but it is one of the best damage weapons compared to other classes.

The destroyer is not that hard, the night edge is good enough to defeat it easily even on master mode.

I wouldn't say the Night's Edge is a great weapon for the Destroyer (Performs worse than all weapons tested against Destroyer for this video) since it can only hit 4 targets per swing, but it can certainly defeat it yes.
