Ma Long's experience was evident in this match as he switched his serve to the left hand, which Lin Gaoyuan was unable to return effectively. Ma Long regained control of the match and went on to win the gold medal. I am truly impressed by his performance.

Lin Gao Yuan movement is faster than Wang Cu Qin, wow....... after lost 3 set Ma Long prefer to use backhand serve, is it bcoz Ma Long think his counter and block can be more accurate?

Nah, its a bh side- underspin serve. This is mostly used because the opponent has to give to your fh or middle side (for righthanders). With this spin and speed direct bh to bh or direct bh attacks are rather not possible. Expect for LGY to step around and bh chiquita but then the placement stays to ML fh (because of the trajectory of spin). In either cases ML can play either a strong fh opener or the ball comes middle which ML then blocks with the BH, creating a hughe angle. LGY has to walk far, ML has time to position and mostly goes for the fh winner. Keep in mind that ML probably realised his fh opener has still much more power than LGY, due to ML technic but also him being heavier. Yes that plays a role too. So with this serve and the angle, possibilities and tactics mentioned, its not just a 'open brawl in all directions' where the younger, more agile, quick and flexible LGY surely wins (aka the first three sets) but a methodological way of 'how do i bring my strong fh into play'. Btw this is no rockets science. I just delivered some insight and details. But this tactic is pretty common. Im junior coach and the side- under serve from bh is one of the first things you learn when you're a fh dominant player. A reversed pendulum serve (side and under to opponent fh) would have the same effect, but then its technically much harder to pull of. Lastly i want to mention that ML does it nearly from middle. That just to cover the bh side at least a little. He still has to do a full step when he wants to play bh. But at least its something 😆 Anyways. Have a good evening
