In these guitar lessons we will take an in-depth look at the Led Zeppelin classic "Ten Years Gone" off of their Physical Graffiti album.
"Ten Years Gone" contains not only some catchy guitar riffs from the incomparable Jimmy Page, but also some highly dynamic guitar parts including the intro and verse.
First things first, you will need to tune your guitar to dropped "D" tuning DADGBE.
For that intro and verse progression, you will need to focus a lot on the dynamic level of the music. Jimmy's playing goes from very extremely subdued and quite, to full bodied from moment to moment. Being able to recreate those dynamic elements is the main key to getting this section to sound correct.
After that the main riff enters with a huge sounding single note line leading into a guitar riff utilizing diads played on the D & G strings. This riff can be a little bit awkward at first and it is important to play it with the right fingerings in order to play it smoothly.
Continuing in the first video lesson we will have the bridge which utilizes power chords with the dropped "D" tuning. The rhythm is probably the most challenging part of this riff even though it isn't very difficult. Pay close attention to that last chord and use an upstroke to perform that cool sounding chord.
Other than that we will have the break section which contains some really nice chord work. This part is a nice chord workout.
In the second video lesson I will focus on the guitar solo parts. We will go note-for-note through Jimmy Page's main guitar solo, and I will will give additional tips on how to play the other guitar solo parts. There are many overdubs to contend with. In fact, Jimmy used up to 14 guitar tracks recording "Ten Years Gone", so obviously performing all of those will be impossible.
Have fun with these two lessons, they really show some classic Jimmy Page at his best! #tenyearsgoneguitarlesson #ledzeppelin #guitarcovers

You are absolutely, hands down, the best teacher on the internet Carl ! TY Brother,,, I wish you where around when I bought my first guitar in 1982 ! (Real Guitar ! A Kramer , they just came out ! I bought it downtown San Diego ! I was a huge Van Halen fan back then ! But we had no internet or anything ! If you wanted to learn there was only books, sheet music and if you where lucky, somebody to show you !!!! It kind of sucks because now that all this instruction is available, and nice guitars are now affordable, Rockn Roll is really sinking badly !!! There are no new bands anymore just appearing and captivating the masses like the 70s and even 80s !!!! But, I hope the younger players are taking advantage of your teachings and others, and maybe they can be the ones who change things and go on to be a world changing band, and bring great new music into the world !!!! I know that was long winded,,,, but its people like you ! Who are helping too keepi it all alive !!! Much appreciated ! 😁🖒✌

@@ianjames9360 Howdy Ian,,, I never heard of either of these bands, but out of respect, I just checked out several videos of both of these bands,,, and I have to say,,, I won't be running out anytime soon to buy their CDs , or sheet music to learn any of their songs. But I am most likley older than you and our tastes in music would differ I would think, but Thank you anyways brother for the turn on ! Are these bands the hot bands within your circle of friends ?

I know I am late to the lesson but the rhythm and chord part 1 of this song was in Drop D and then this solo is in standard?? was he using one of those double neck guitars maybe? or he just tune it mid song? he was a beast! breaking out violin bows for solos and stuff...either way great lesson as always Carl.

Great question Frank, if you watch the whole solo they never hit the low E so you can leave it in Drop D.

Beyond you answering your own question (love that, seriously, lols), if you are in drop D you still have all the same notes available, and only have to remember they are now 2 frets higher, so you could still play them if you needed (witch you don't for this particular tune, but this is a good thing to remember).

valentino galaviz It doesn’t really matter either way, for the solo, since the 6th string is never used.

It also wouldn't matter because those are two completely separate guitar tracks. To replicate it *exactly* live, you would need a second guitarist. But Page like most guitarists will just play the solo with the bass and drums, and compensate where needed. A drop D on the E string still leaves all the notes previously available, you just need to play them up one whole step. But like TheStompboxer pointed out, that wouldn't be necessary for this song.

Bite sized chunks. Bite sized chunks. Bite sized chunks. Bite sized chunks. Bite sized chunks. Bite sized chunks. Etc. That's how I went from learning Led Zeppelin and Rush songs, to transcribing and playing Bach and Pagannini violin solos on electric guitar just a few years later. Never try to learn an entire song in one shot. Find the length of time that works best for *your* memory. For me that sometimes is an entire song, but for anything I find difficult to play technically, or to memorize, I might go down as far as just playing 3 notes of a phrase over and over until I don't have to think about it. Muscle memory takes over and then you can focus on just being expressive on that part and move on to the next part. But *most importantly,* never ever compare your playing to anyone else. As soon as you do that, you really may as well just sell your guitar. Only compare yourself to *your own growth,* not just as a musician, but with anything you do. This is the only way to improve with anything. If you got a C on your last math test, but got a C+ this time, then *you are getting better,* and that is all that matters. There will always be someone better than you, that was true for Jimmy Page and it is true now for any shredder out there. The only people who ever get good, only compare themselves to their past selves. Besides all that: *art is not a race to be won.*What is great art is only a matter of opinion. It is a race that not only can never ever be won, it realistically does not even exist as a race in any form.
