Ten Minute English and British History #02 - Late Roman Britain

Twitter: / tenminhistory
Patreon: www.patreon.com/user?u=4973164
This episode covers Britannia during the late Roman Empire from the reigns of Septimius Severus through the Third Century Crisis all the way to the end of Roman Britain. It focuses on Britannia's role as just another constituent part of the Empire and how it affected Roman politics such as the appointment of Constantine the Great there.
Recommended books:
P. Salway - Roman Britain: A Very Short Introduction (2015) - A very cheap and accessible book, Salway has many other general narratives of Roman Britain as well.;
O. Hekster - Rome and its Empire, AD 193-284 (2008);
R. Collins - Early Medieval Europe, 300-1000 (2010) - Genuinely a phenomenal book for greater European context of the period.
Ten Minute English and British History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Thank you for watching, though, it's always appreciated.

    A small important detail is that by the end of Roman Britain, the legions guarding it were mostly barbarians. Meaning they were the local tribes trained, equipped and paid for by Rome. Which meant that when Mganus Maximus pulled out the British legions, it wasn't just the soldiers but entire tribes that left: men, women, old people, children and livestock. This caused a depopulation of Britain, but an increase in the population of the province of Amorica. This can be seen in the written records and oral history of Brittany, and is how the Breton people and culture came to exist on the continent of Europe. Even today there are Upper and Lower Cornwall in Brittany; or the stories of King Arthur existing in Wales, Cornwall, and Brittany.

    I wish I learned more about European history in my classroom. What I learned alot about is the Islamic empires (Caliphates and Ottomans) and the rest of it is my country's brief local history and colonization. Speaking of local history, could you cover the early Indus Valley civilization towards ancient and medieval Hindu empires and early Hindu Buddhist empires in South East Asia? That would be great for westerners to learn much of my people as I do learn yours.

    Well, to be fair; the Roman civilization lasted a really long time period, and by the end it had been in decline for a REALLY long time. Technically, few countries were better than this until fairly recently in modern history, and even today few are as stable as the Roman Empire was. I mean, it took more than a thousand years for the English to stop killing each other and start Empire building, and this Empire lasted far less time than the Roman Empire. If you look at the big picture; yeah there was lots of wars and shit, but in between there were regular periods of prosperity and peace.

    Matthew Hemmings to be fair the British empire had massive effects on the world. We have America, Australia, Britain, New Zealand, Canada and the rest under the commonwealth. Just like the romans learnt from the Greeks the British learnt from the romans just like a lot of Europe did with each other. While yes these are seperate countries they usually attend to each others aid when necessary which if they did build an empire again it’d be very powerful but probably result in another world war which wouldn’t be good. But it’d be interesting to see what happens if the Roman Empire came back and how strong it would be in today’s age. Obviously I want neither empires to come back but it would be interesting but probably result in a lot of deaths. You even have the Ottoman Empire which would probably be the most likely to make a return

    One thing about Constantine: afaik it's not known for certain whether Constantine converted to Christianity, but he was certainly convinced enough to legalise it in the Empire

    I Think theres still a Palaiologos relative living. so... Step 1 find one. Step 2 Liberate Constantinople. Step 3 revive The Roman Empire. You can retake Ravenna but that's extra.

    +IVLIANVS AVGVSTVS. Meh, it's not like we need a Palaiologos. Not being of a certain dynasty has never stopped a Roman emperor before.

    Edward Karlsson You Don't have to. You don't even need Constantinople. You can just call any Empire Roman, like the Holy Roman Empire, Italy or Russia.

    +IVLIANVS AVGVSTVS There's not, if there are any relatives of the Palaiologi they A. Don't have that name anymore and B. We don't know who they are. There was a Greek during the War of Independence I believe who claimed to be related to the Megas Komnenoi, but he's largely thought to have been a fraud.

    I really like your videos, they are informative and your animations are charming. It would be helpful for me if quickly at the start of your video you go over a very quick timeline and then refer back to it at the end of the video. It would make digesting all the information easier. Keep up the good work!
