Ten Minute English and British History #07 - The Late Anglo-Saxons and King Cnut

Twitter: / tenminhistory
Patreon: www.patreon.com/user?u=4973164
This episode covers the reign of Æthelred the Unready and the many problems he faced, most notably the Vikings. The reign of Cnut and his many achievements and his legacy alongside those of his two sons, Harold and Harthacnut are also examined. This period is the last time that a Scandinavian would rule England but their legacy changed England forever.
Recommended books:
Recommended Reading:
James Campbell et al. - The Anglo-Saxons (1991) - You'll only have to see this book one more time in the recommendations. But seriously, it's unmatched as far as an overview of Anglo-Saxon England is concerned.
Timothy Bolton - Cnut the Great (2017) - A new work and a good one at that. It's very pro-Cnut and is about changing the modern-day opinion of him from that of a conquering Viking to a modernising statesmen. Very good, though.
Michael Wood - In Search of the Dark Ages (2005) - Originally published in 81 so beware of straight-up believing everything. He covers most major Anglo-Saxon kings including Æthelred the Unready. It's very accessible and the chapters on Offa and Eric Bloodaxe are definitely worth a read.
Ten Minute English and British History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Thank you for watching, though, it's always appreciated.

As I'm sure many of you have noticed the release times for these have been varying over the weeks. This is just so I can see when is the best time to do so. This is the last week it will happen and I imagine that all future episode will be out on Saturdays from now on. The text generators have been a pain recently so if any of the text is off let me know. Also, the next episode is the Norman Conquest so no more Anglo-Saxons.

The conventional wisdom is that Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday are the best days to post (particularly Friday and Saturday), and that you should post between 2 and 4 PM according to the timezone of your biggest-viewing nation (likely to be either the US or UK) on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday, or slightly earlier for Thursday and Friday, or between 9 and 11 AM on the weekend. Obviously, this might not be quite true for you, since your audience is likely to be somewhat older than the general KZread population and so may have somewhat different viewing habits.

In the poem "The Battle of Maldon", it's recounted how Bryhtnoth gave up a superior position by allowing the Vikings to cross to the mainland and giving them all the room they needed to have their battle, rather than keeping them bottled up on the island and daring them to come across the causeway whenever they felt like dying. This didn't turn out well for Bryhtnoth.

No I am British. I am descended from French on both my Father's father's side (Ditchburns - Norman Knights) and my father's mother's side (Manissiere's, or something like that, as in manure because they were "shit shovellers or something like that, anyway they came to England as religious refugees, I am not sure when but France did go through some pretty intolerant - resulting in some cannibalism - times.) it is also likely true of my mother's side where I am descended from the Wyndham family which is a powerful aristocratic family. Incidentally I am descended from some that went to Australia hence being part Australian. As you can tell I really am interested in family history.

I guess it has been said dozens of times before, but just to be that guy: Harold Bluetooth is actually the inspiration of modern-day Bluetooth, the idea being that Bluetooth is supposed to be connecting all types of devices just like Harold Bluetooth connected all of Scandinavia. Therefore the Bluetooth logo is the rune that basically depicts Harold's initials.

Adding on a tiny piece of information. Canute's name was actually 'Knud' with a hard, clear K as well as the D at the end, a name not common but still used in Denmark and Scandinavia today. It only has 1 syllable but to ease pronunciation in Saxon English, it was prolonged into 2. "Ca-nut", but likely with the 'newt' ending being a more modern way to pronounce it.

A comment about Æthelred the Unready's name. Given that "red" in this case means "counsel", that is similar to Norwegian "råd". The Norwegian word for "councilor" is "rådmann". So his name in Norwegian would have been "Edelråd den Urådde". So Old English and current Norwegian isn't that different.

@9:25 With most people throughout history dead by their mid-30s - including as mentioned here medieval rulers - it is easy to understand the awe at the long life of the pharaoh Ramesses II. Known as Ramesses the Great he was born in 1303 BC and died in 1213 BC, living into his 90th year. To most of his subjects he must have seemed like an immortal.

The story of Cnut having Eadric killed is interesting. Supposedly, Eadric came to claim a reward for betraying Aethelred. Cnut rewarded the traitor by having one of his retainers lop off Eadric's head.

Denmark didn't raid England. Other norse and some unemployed danes did. Denmark was paid to protect england, and did so when paid, but the payments frequently stopped, which meant firing the mercenaries and stopping the protecting. Which meant the raids resumed, sometimes including the now unemployed mercenaries.

It's a pretty common problem. William the Conqueror manages to fix some of it but arguably for the Normans and the Angevins/Plantagenets the problem gets much worse.

Well, there's also the small matter of the Danish stopping by repeatedly to extort ridiculous amounts of money. :D But in the end, that's how medieval rule works: As king, you have to manage the loyalty of your lords (with the church among them), and granting them land and titles (and un-granting them) is the major way to do that.
