    The Mk 3 coaches really are a testament to their designers back in the 70’s ! Such a modern design, and seems such a sacrilege to be getting rid of them! 😕

    Its ironic that two locos from the 1960's, in their original liveries are towing coaches from the late 1970's off for scrap. Sad scenes, but well captured. Historic moments in the story of British Railways. Cheers. Dave

    London Emergency TV they are gorgeous . I lean towards large-logo BR blue with big yellow ends and silver roof, but that heritage green livery shows how long 37s have been working. It's not like they've had to gut them and spoon the inner workings of a 66 or an MTU prime mover to keep them working either. They got the tractors right the first time!

    1:12 With two BR green class 37s and red and cream mk1s, I would've guessed this was a railtour with new ex-Virgin stock 8:30 wow! doubleheaded steam at night! (with only two coaches) 10:50 what a neat catch! all BR blue (except for the one coach, which I don't recognize the livery of) 12:07 a gray class 67, all blue DVT, an inverted BR blue mk3, a DB class 90 and 67! What a weird train that's moving back and forth a lot! 16:52 six barrier coaches with one old EMU. The former TFL ones didn't need barrier coaches 21:35 wow! a pacer trio! The amount of loco-hauled passenger trains is quite amazing, even though the cars are empty!

    Why do all locomotive movements seemingly need two locomotives these days? That first train had almost as much motive power as rolling stock? I can understand for push-me-pull-you operation as with engineering trains but, otherwise, surely it is cheaper to run round at destination’s end? And the two locomotives on the first train were both at the same end anyway.

    Always like the roar from a Deltic under full load, any way can you tell me why the driver or engineer have forced what seems to be a cardboard box in the middle under sheilds @20:58. On a car/truck you could do this if very cold outside, therefore restricting airflow to & through radiator so more hot water can be kept for the heater matrix, in return heating the cab. As I say I woukd like to know what purpose this box is doing there,,, as in physically mashed in..... #peaceout ✌️

    Vincit Veritas it’s the UTU Train (Ultrasonic Testing Unit) that looks for Side Guage Cracking and all sorts of good stuff in the Rail. From the looks of it it’s done the Up Tunnel line then probably turned back at Pilning and done the Down Tunnel line. Can’t really tell, not sure if there was a Possession at the time or not, it may not have been working and was only getting itself into position for some working at a later date.

    @@h2ik373 You miss my point. I was answering why slam door Mk IIIs could not be used and then pointed out there are Mk IVs abundantly available. Now as to your point about the modified Mk IIIs (GWR Castle sets, X Country and Scotrail Inter7city sets) this is costing £ Mns and the project is running a year late. Why? Because a) the corrosion is terrible and b) every carriage was basically hand built and every one is different. Its why Wabtec chose the crappy sliding door system rather than the better plug door system as it was the only one that would fit. (IEP sets use the same dumb system and why there are seats with no windows ... #FacePalm...) Makes me wonder how on earth Chiltern managed to do such a brilliant job with plug doors on their Mk IIIs. Only the UK rail industry would spend £ Mns adapting 40+ year old stock when 30 year old ready built stock is being scrapped. Its utter madness!

    Isn't it a shame that these mk3 coaches weren't offered to the heritage sector, they would make good stock for railtours, much safer than mk1 stock, if plug doors were retrofitted to them. I am sure NR would rather see them used for railtours than the mk1s.

  • @kimjongbingbongtingtong4430

    @kimjongbingbongtingtong4430

    4 жыл бұрын

    We used them for railtours a few years ago, but there are a couple of issues which can reduce their flexibility, including a specific third-rail conflict with one version of BT10 bogies. Add to that the aesthetic authenticity issue that makes them less appealing to some tour operators and they will (sadly) disappear. On top of that, many have started to reach the end of safe service lives (without really expensive overhauls) and that's the final nail in the coffin. Porterbrook were selling Mk III's to New Zealand railways in the late noughties, and plenty of other countries started to look at recycling them, but in most cases they aren't suitable because the interiors are absolutely knackered.

    dover one foxtrot if mk1s can knock snout heritage lines and mk2s can be used by paying passengers on the mainline then something bad has happened in keeping the mk3s maintained. I guess there is just enough slop in each coach to make fitting standard parts, like power doors, a challenge. I wonder if Wabtec found some hidden horrors when they upgraded the Scotrail mk3s as well. Maybe opening up sections revealed heavy corrosion?
