From "The Civil War" by Frank Wildhorn and Jack Murphy, this dramatic song brings the reality of war into strikingly personal terms as a young soldier sings of his father and his own mortality. A powerful choice for men's chorus!

Tell my father that his son Didn't run, or surrender That I bore his name with pride As I tried to remember You are judged by what you do While passing through As I rest 'neath fields of green Let him lean on your shoulder Tell him how I spent my youth So the truth could grow older Tell my father when you can I was a man Tell him we will meet again Where the angels learn to fly Tell him we will meet as men For with honor did I die Tell him how I wore the Blue Proud and true through the fire Tell my father so he'll know I love him so Tell him how I wore the blue Proud and true like he taught Me Tell my father not to cry Then say goodbye

I know the song to but I'm in choir.
As a guy who wants to enter the armed forces when he's an adult I felt like I should salute while this song is playing. It's so beautiful.
RIP Soldiers who have fallen in defense of their home and people on their own land or far off in some unfamiliar land. To soldiers young and old, living and passed on: You are the truest form of heroes.
How could you dislike something so pure and beautiful. It's sad because it's about veterans. And there's so many disrespectful people out there that treat those veterans alive/dead like trash. In reality those people whom do that are trash. Like have some respect the reason you're free and safe is because of them. So keep your disrespect somewhere else. Please and thank you!

I’ve sung this in several men’s choirs since high school and everyone cries. So powerful - I think every men’s chorus should sing this song at some point

The Boys choir actually sung this and it actually made me cry and I was begging for it to stop so I wouldn't cry but I didn't want it to stop
The boys sung this at my school for our chorus concert I think like 2 years ago and it was truly heartwarming and very emotional I was literally crying on stage 😭😭😭😭
The guys in my high school choir are doing this and I cry every time they sing it. Our soloist has such a beautiful voice and this is such a sad song that I can't help it.
It was that feeling when I was gonna cry. But I know it’s normal because listening to this song u can’t imagine what they are going through in the fields and fighting for America. Saying there final letters to their loved ones. But RIP to the soldiers who have went on the fields and sacrificed their lives just to save America. And my choir teacher was in the army and told his stories of when he was in the army. Respect to the soldiers who have fought for our country and freedom!
My men's choir picked up this song and we all cried like babys.
This song has changed my life. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do with my life, the military was always on my mind. But now that my grandpa is gone (he was in the army and was basically my dad because my dad left before I was born). I want to make him proud of what I am gonna do with my life and I also want to put effort into keeping this amazing country safe. I hope you all have a great day. :)
I'm singing this for my choir concert soon, and I'm not too huge on all the war stuff but I'll tell ya I'm gonna love every second of making everyone in the audience cry because this is beautiful

The guys in my choir sang this last night for our concert, and the ending always gets me. This song always has me in tears at the end.
A friend of mine told me about this song, it is beautiful, but since my son is deploying to Afghanistan sometime in the next three months not sure the timing was good, but beautiful song

I remember when we practiced this in choir, some of the ladies in our class started crying/whispering along
I still remember singing this during my 9th grade year, this was probably the best song we did. None of the others could be compared to this one
This is a beautiful arrangement.
I remember once listening to a story of a group of guys singing this. One broke down because his father was deployed in Afghanistan. Another broke down explaining that he couldn’t relate because he never had a father. Each and every guy had a story and it turned into a big emotional moment for them.
I love this song so much
Our school choir sang this and it was truly amazing

I sang this in my 6th grade year and I had a duet for the ending of the song

This song is said to be the last words of a dying soldier to one of his comrades
I sang this song in my choir 2-3 years ago and we all cried while singing it. Especially being in a military family it’s just so moving. Who ever wrote this song is brilliant.
Im singing this in my Men's Choir, Low Beaux (Low Bows Is how that's pronounced)! :D
RIP to those who lost their lives in Afghanistan.🇺🇸
at my high school every year at the memorial day assembly the boy's choir sings this song and I cry every time. I'm listening to this today when the assembly would've been, and crying because covid has taken that away from us. It can't substitute how it sounds when my classmates are singing, but it's close enough.
