Telegram Isn't As Private As You Think

Ғылым және технология

Telegram advertises itself as a private messaging app, and has attracted over 800 million users. But Telegram is one of the last apps I'd recommend if you're looking for private communication.
In this video we explain how encryption actually works on Telegram: how it's not possible to end-to-end encrypt group chats, and how direct messages are not private by default. There are also some red flags about their encryption protocol, and how they present their overall privacy to the broader public.
00:00 Intro
00:47 Group Chats
01:38 One to One Messages
04:25 Encryption
05:54 Who Gets Access to Your Data?
08:27 Conclusion
Group chats on Telegram are wildly popular. But just remember that those messages are all able to be read by Telegram, as well as anyone else who is able to get access. I don't want anyone being misled about the privacy on the platform due to impressive marketing campaigns.

I disagree here, you have to look at the data that these companies put out of their own reach with e2ee encryption, and that will dictate how much privacy you're actually getting on the app (phone number is irrelevant in a world of voip numbers that are easily procurable, and on top of that it's possible to use Signal in beta without a phone number)

@NaomiBrockwellTV You have to trust that their company is squeaky clean and won't link your phone number to any chats you are in whether or not it's end-to-end encrypted. There is a trail to be followed, and it can be used for correlation attacks when dealing with high resource attackers. That being said, if you were going for privacy/anonymity, you'd be using open source option like the Matrix network on a device (pc) that runs mostly non proprietary code (linux distro like qubes os). The rabbit hole is deep when you want to acquire true privacy 🤷‍♂️

For people that want to obtain it legally, that would be true. If a server was compromised, a hacker would have access to the keys, meaning they could decrypt all the messages (including history) stored on the server, whereas with client-to-client, there are no keys on the server with regards to users' messages so you would not retrieve anything. Besides, insider leaks, attacks and privacy invasion is more common that a hacker penetrating the network.

At 1:17 you highlight the agreement that says group chats are stored on their services, but ignore the next sentence, "stored HEAVILY ENCRYPTED... keys stored in different jurisdictions..." Did you miss that part? And completely ignoring that, you say they can read messages, see pics, and that any govt can demand, but if you read their whole discussion of their security, they make the point that by splitting keys and storing each part in different jurisdictions, 2-3 different governments would need to demand keys. Maybe you don't believe their claim, or maybe it's still not good enough, but it seems misleading to not at least acknowledge it.

I think the main problem with any encrypted email service is people not understanding if the person at the other end is using something like Gmail it's not encrypted. Getting friends, family or even a business to properly encrypt everything is not easy. If you use Windows 10 or 11 it captures what you type unless you turn it off and make sure it stays off after updates. Windows, iphones and Google Androids are similar and can capture text or do a screenshot. You can only be secure with a good Linux distro and a deGoogled phone and your recipients must have the same or it gets captured their end.

You’re a gem! Seriously, you are a giver I’ve been around the block a few times and down the street and across the pond and back again so I come to the view communication with skepticism wondering often how real. Well I have been watching, and enjoying your generosity Let me rephrase that your helpful generosity for sometime now. OMG! The world needs many more givers like us like you. When I’m about to say how much seems antithetical and perhaps it is well, you should ask more I know lol after what I just said you have a very soft “ ask”, given the value you so openly share I want to implore my fellow watchers and appreciators if that is such a word if not we can add that to the lexicon of English. You give so much and ask in a whisper. So to those of you who have enjoyed Naomi‘s endless giving please, think about how much Naomi has shared with you and how many decisions you may have, or definitely have made differently or changed courses and how much she has saved us in terms of costly decisions. No, I don’t know Naomi or I should say I know her as you know her through videos only so thank you Naomi again and I am floor my fellow listeners if you can and we all can do something give because I see wisdom like this as insurance. Or an assurance of better decision making.

I have a friend who is the most paranoid person I’ve ever met. I used this app for about 2 weeks when up pops a message from someone I’d blocked from everything years ago. That was that for Telegraph and me. When I told my friend I assumed she’d delete it. Nope. She counts on it for loads of conspiracy theorists and for using when she goes on cruises. I’m going to share this with her and see if that changes her mind.

The relevant decryption keys are split into parts and are never kept in the same place as the data they protect. As a result, several court orders from different jurisdictions are required to force us to give up any data." But how effective that is and what other attack vectors there are...idk
