Teizō Matsumura (1929-2007): Achime (1957)

In this lovely piece Teizō Matsumura, as it were, conjures up the spirits of the "Ballets Russes" (in particular the dancers of "Le sacre" and "Les noces") so as to make them lure the Sun goddess Amaterasu out of her cave - just as Ame no Uzume did, according to the origin myth of the Shintō dance and song tradition of "kagura". "Achime waza (Rite of Achime)" is the most archaic extant "kagura", and nobody knows for sure if its lyrics - "Achime! Oh, oh, oh, oh! Oke. Achime! Oh, oh, oh, oh!" etc. - were ever supposed to have a meaning.
