Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time (Arcade) Playthrough
Ойындар
A playthrough of Konami's 1991 license-based arcade beat 'em up, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time.
Played through as Michaelangelo on the default difficulty setting. Once the game ends at 35:45 I let the attract sequence play on loop to show the different character profiles. Finally, at 41:07 I load up the service menu to run the machine's diagnostic sound test. Any excuse to blast more orchestra hits, you know?
Konami created a lot of arcade classics back in the late 80s/early 90s. Contra, TMNT, Sunset Riders, Asterix, G.I. Joe, Bucky O'Hare, X-Men, Vendetta, Violent Storm, Metamorphic Force... the list goes on and on, but few of them are held in quite as high regard as Turtles in Time.
It looked like a playable version of the cartoon to my eyes in 1991, and it knew how to kick things off with a bang: the intro plays a lengthy digitized clip of Pizza Power, a song from the TMNT album that was featured in Pizza Hut's Coming Out of Our Shells tour. What kid would've ever been able to ignore such a siren song blasting from an arcade cabinet's speakers, or to resist the appeal of the game's massive four-player control panel?
Just about anyone that can remember when it came out can tell you how impressive it was in its time. Video games as we knew them just didn't look like this yet!
And not just that, but it was everywhere! Arcades, bowling alleys, fast food joints, pool halls - I personally remember playing it at the Navy Exhange and the cart area of a Sam's Club back in the day.
The general consensus that has formed over the years seems to be that the SNES port surpassed the original arcade game, and I wouldn't necessarily disagree. It was better fleshed out with new stages, different bosses, a remixed soundtrack, and an improved control scheme. Those aren't knocks against the excellent arcade game though - they're just testaments to how far above and beyond Konami went in bringing the game home. The content differences and the more fluid animation make this one still well worth checking out!
Let's kick shell!
One last thing - I wonder just how many of us made up our own words to the intro because we couldn't make out the actual lyrics. I still laugh thinking about how my buddy Tim told me how he used to hear "we don't sleep with our parents."
In case you were wondering, here are the real lyrics:
Growing up in a glass bowl
with chameleons, lizards, and tadpoles,
it hardly enters your mind
that there's something better than this.
A lettuce leaf and a carrot,
maybe a seed from a parrot,
believe me when I tell you
the word gourmet just don't exist.
But pizza power,
a flying saucer food delight,
pizza power,
oh, that's what makes us feel all right.

The arguably even better sequel to the already-classic 1989 arcade Turtles. What is there left to say? It's widely considered one of the most iconic beat-em-ups of all time. The setpieces are a step up in variety, thanks to the time travel gimmick. We already cover New York with the first three stages, so Konami had us fighting off Foot through the stone ages, colonial times, old west, the woefully overromanticized "future" (let's say it's an alternate 2020 where Shredder and Krang took over with their advanced technology), and a space station before facing off with the Shred-Head to save Lady Liberty. It's ridiculous and makes zero sense, but then again, TMNT, so it fits. What an adventure. Turtles in Time is the gold standard of a licensed game done with extreme care for the source material and making a good game in general. The graphics are bright and appealing, there's a ton of variety to the enemies you battle across the different eras, there are digitized quips that might provoke a laugh or two, and don't even get me started with the soundtrack. I think the beauty of the 90s, I think about this game as a factor in defining the decade. This was a time and achievement like no other that has truly...stood the test of *Time. **_COWABUNGA!!!_*

When I look back at games like this and Doom and other games from that era, it’s like…they were so remarkably simple. But they were designed well and had great graphics and music and were super fun. I played 90s Doom for the first time last year and had such a blast with it. It’s fun to just return to an era of games where things were less complicated. I’m excited to fire this game up when the collection comes out.

Pssst, console sales say otherwise, your side lost by 9.1 million units worldwide. Time to let it go, wars over and you're still riding it's dead, cold, decomposed corpse. The SNES TMNT games are still fondly remembered, Hyperstone Heist is only remember by those who played it back in the day. For the record, I own both TMNT for both systems, I find something I like about TiT and HH.
I played this game and only got up to Leatherhead before running out of quarters when I played this game at an arcade for a birthday party when I was a kid. Good times
I still remember to this day going to the Arcades. It was one Saturday evening in the 90’s and loved playing so many games at the Arcades when I saw people playing TMNT: Turtles in Time I put my quarter on the screen and waited for my turn. I had so much fun playing TMNT: Turtles in Time and listening to the loud music. But it gets even better one Friday night I was looking through gaming magazines(I believe it was Gamepro)and saw a preview of TMNT: Turtles in Time for SNES. I had to try it out and went to the video store to see if they had the game. When I went there it was on the rack in its SNES empty box glory. AVAILABLE TO RENT!!! And to celebrate I went to the supermarket to buy soda, candy and chips. I couldn’t wait to play the game so I ran home with the bag in my hand and when I got home I put the cartridge in my SNES and played until 5 am. So much fun! Great times as a teenager! 😊😊😊
Dudes and dudettes, major league butt-kicking is back in town! 🐢
Original arcade version - Baxter Stockman just turns pink and simply defeated on the rooftop. SNES port - Baxter flutters to the back of the scenery, his gun explodes, causing him to fall to his death.
I like the arcade game a lot, but I honestly prefer the snes sound font and the additional level in that version. Plus I also think the choice of Slash being the boss of Prehistoric Turtlesaurus is much better than Cement Man. Plus I also enjoy the Final boss being super shredder, which makes his appearance in Turtles 2 more disappointing.
Interesting, I thought this one was developed for the SNes, never knew it was an arcade release first.

My best friend and I used to play the SNES version all the time. Naturally before some Saturday evening pizza.
When I was a kid one of the first games I had for the SNES was Turtles In Time. I never knew there was an arcade version until me and my family walked in Burger King and they had this machine in the lobby. I watched someone play a little bit of it and I was impressed. Can't wait for the Cowabunga collection!
Watching this makes me feel like a kid walking into the arcade with a pocket of game tokens. Aladdin's Castle, Space Port and Tilt 1988-1993 best gaming times for my brother and I. That's the arcade and home systems. We had them all at one point. NES,SNES, and GENESIS. All connected to the TV in our room. Our friends couldn't believe it. Christmas break was paradise. An entire week of no school and games.. LOL
I rarely saw this in arcades, but mainly because i was already obsessed with the SNES version. It certainly was different

I remember playing this in the arcades as a kid, amazing game.
The Pizza Hut “Coming Out of Their Shells” tour with the TMNT doing music had them perform “Pizza Power” as their cross hit that made the soundtrack for this game.
Great version, no doubt about it. But I prefer the SNES version a little more. Granted, it is missing some animation frames, the compositions are slightly worse, and you can only have up to 2 players. SNES Is The Best Game In Earth
I like this one better than snes because it has voices in the cutscenes and new bosses and better animations
I love the SNES version of this game
The ONLY thing I really wish is that this version would have the voice-over announcing the start of the level with what sounds like the _Garfield and Friends_ VA, because I love that in the SNES version. That, and I always appreciated being able to change the appearance of the turtles in the SNES version's options menu: You feeling animated series flavor, or something more like what Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird would envision? Otherwise, this is pretty much the best TMNT game ever made (and yes, I think the SNES version is just as good!).

Such an awesome beat them up. And I dare say the SNES version was better in quite a few things. Rat King boss at the end of third level. A new Technodrome level following the sewer level, Toca and Rasa as a sub boss in this new level. A new Shredder fight in the Technodrome level. Bebop and Rocksteady replaced Toca and Rasa in the pirate ship level. Slasher in prehistoric level made much more sense then that weird blob thing. The new final boss, which was Super Shredder, could be a positive or negative. Idk. Of course the OG Arcade version was better in some regards. More mob on screen, a few more mob types, more voices and clearer. 4 players. More animations.

Arcade version feels slightly unfinished. Going directly from the sewer to prehistoric times because ghost Shredder randomly decided to send you there with his mind beams (none of which is true of Shredder or his abilities) makes no sense. Still, those voice clips are very high quality.

How does that make it unfinished?

@@jaywest3734It actually doesn't make sense the way the arcade version did. The SNES version saw Konami correct that error.

Special attacks are required for quite a bit of the bosses in the arcade version.
