Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist (Genesis) Playthrough

Ойындар

A playthrough of Konami's 1992 license-based beat 'em up for the Sega Genesis, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist.
Played on hard mode with Michelangelo.
Nintendo's policies of the time prevented their third party publishers from releasing the same games for both Nintendo and Sega platforms. That didn’t stop Konami from remixing a couple of their hits for the Genesis, though, and after years of being left on the sidelines, Sega fans finally got a Ninja Turtles game to call their very own.
Hyperstone Heist plays almost exactly like Turtles in Time ( • Teenage Mutant Ninja T... ) did on the Super Nintendo, but with a few tweaks. It moves at a slightly quicker pace, there's now a dedicated dash button, and you can no longer throw enemies in to the screen.
But as similar as the games are, this isn't Turtles in Time, nor is it really an "original" game: most of it is made up of assets recycled from Konami's previous TMNT games. There are a couple of neat surprises, though. You get to fight Tatsu from the movie, and the third stage is an updated take on one of the levels that was exclusive to the NES version of the first arcade game ( • Teenage Mutant Ninja T... ).
As per the plot borrowed from The Manhattan Project ( • Teenage Mutant Ninja T... ), you battle through five extremely long stages in your attempt to save Manhattan from Shredder and Krang. The stages are broken up into multiple parts, but the game feels artificially drawn out thanks to the lack of variety and the seemingly endless waves of attacking foot soldiers. All of the games in the series do this to some extent, but The Hyperstone Heist likes to push its luck in this regard, especially when you consider that one of the stages is a boss rush. It doesn't feel as carefully considered and constructed nor as high budget as Turtles in Time did, but that's not to say that it's not fun or worthwhile.
The same goes for the presentation. The character sprites are sharp and vibrant and the animation is smooth, but the backgrounds tend to be pretty bland due to their lack of depth and color. The FM music is excellent - it really stretches the Genesis's sound chip, and the couple of tracks that were composed specifically for this game are awesome - but like in Konami's other games on the system, the digital effects sound awful. The drum samples, orchestra hits, and voice clips are loud, raspy, and distorted.
The Hyperstone Heist is a very good game, but it is also one that feels like it was put together as cheaply and quickly as possible from parts that were already lying around. It's fun, no doubt, and even better with a friend, but I don't think it ever quite lives up to its arcade and Nintendo counterparts.

@@Bloodreign1 No, the MegaMan games are not ports. They're actually REMAKES with brand new visual and audio assets befitting of a 16-bit console. Games made across different platforms are classified as remakes (most effort), ports (using existing assets and render them to run optimally on a different platform for better or worse), and emulation (least amount of effort). The upcoming Cowabunga collection is an example of emulation.

This game is pretty much Konami's consolation prize for Sega owners that missed out on Turtles in Time due to Nintendo contractually telling them converting that game exclusively on SNES. It is a really good game in the TMNT line up, as long you don't bring its inevitable comparisons to the aforementioned Turtles in Time and the re-used assets from previous games (Baxter Stockman being the most egregious example of that) It makes up by having a more updated take on a TMNT2 nes stage, unique songs, and a boss for scene 3, which is Tatsu from the first two live action films, following the footsteps from Tokka & Rahzar in previous games. And yea this game is actually a bit longer than some others despite being only 5 stages.

The game is damned fine, save for that Boss Rush stage, which feels like a total coput, and should've been an entire stage of it's own, instead of just fighting the same bosses again, and reusing the first arcade games Baxter sprite. People want to call this game better than TiT, but this game has that crippling factor against it, while every stage and boss in Turtles in Time feels fresh and unique. They both take about the same amount of time to beat, and both games, even on the hardest settings shouldn't give a seasoned gamer too much trouble.

The Hyperstone Heist was surely a fun TMNT game, but was lacking in some aspects. That being said, you know what should have been done instead? A Genesis TMNT game where the Turtles fight their way into the Technodrome, then end up sent into Dimension X. There, the Turtle explore different planets in search of a way home. Like they first end up on a beautiful alien forest planet, similar to Xen from Black Mesa. Then after hijacking an enemy ship, the Turtles explore an ice planet, a mining complex on the familiar rocky planet, an alien looking city, then fly through space on hoverboards, then enter Krang’s spaceship, which has the portal home, where they of course fight Super Shredder as the final boss.

What makes this game superior to the SNES-version is, that you could do instant-running by pressing a button and not waiting for 3-4 steps, as in the SNES-version. That way you could use shoulder-dash, salti and different leg-combos very fast and instant, also moving over the screen faster, which was really good. I used the running a lot and the shoulder-dash. After the shoulder-dash came the omote-gyaku, really nice. Years later, when I played the SNES-version, I found it waaaaayy too long and Slash as an enemy was a pain in the ass. Mode7 doesnt take the cake for me. Zooming sprites that become more pixeled the bigger they become are no argument to me.

1 move doesn't make a game better than another, it takes far, far more than that. You also complain about TiT's length, hate to tell you, this game is about the same length. The SNES was capable of doing far far more due to the 2 year gap in hardware between the 16 bit consoles. You sound like one of those old bitter Sega fans who blame Nintendo for Sega's demise, when it wasn't just them, but Sony, and Sega's own ability to fuck themselves over. Mode 7, and scaling sprites are far greater than a dash move relegated to 1 button. If that does it for you, your standards are low, real low. This game is nothing but reused assets from other TMNT games outside of 1 sprite in the game, doesn't impress me, makes me believe that Sega rushed out a TMNT game for Genesis fans, because TiT did quite well, and Sega figured a game for Genesis would do well, it didn't. TiT is beloved and fondly remembered today, Hyperstone Heist will forever have to live in Turtles in Time's shadow.

It's the games hugest flaw, and an absolute knockout to it, and one of many reasons Genesis fans felt Konami never fully put full effort into their Genesis catalog (though Rocket Knight Adventures shows what a motivated Konami could do on a then strange console to them). This game is not Gradius (which didn't repeat the same bosses from that particular game for it's Boss Rush stage), no need for a Boss Rush.

Hyperstone Heist on the other hand, has always been relegated as the lesser game , which it is, but is still solid fun to play. 7:24 Huge missed opportunity here. For starters you are walking water! Why not have the Turtles on their surfboards fighting some pizza monsters culminating with the Rat King boss fight like on Snes? If they had done that, what do you know it would have transitioned perfectly into stage 2 10:26. Considering the assests were already done and ready to be re-used wreaks of laziness and being rushed. Very solid game but could have and should have been as good or better (I prefer the OST and snappier gameplay) then Turtles in Time. The Gauntlet stage is also a huge slap in the face. If you're going to recycle a background atleast have some new bosses to fight (Beebop, Slash, Toka, Razar etc.)

Most of the levels from the SNES are there, they're just condensed versions with no boss. And as far as the music, this is the only Konami Genesis game that used orchestral crashes which Konami used on just about every arcade game they developed in the early 90s.

Fun game in it's own right, but doesn't hold a candle to Turtles in Time on the SNES. It is however a good fun game, and compliments TiT quite well. When I play TMNT games, I usually start with TMNT 3 NES, then Hyperstone, then TiT to finish the 3 course meal, though sometimes might sprinkle in Back From the Sewers GB as an appetizer. Though I have a nickname for this game, TMNT: The Reused Assets Game. Pretty much everything is reused from other TMNT games, save for the Tatsu sprite.
