Fun Fact: This film was rejected by every major film studio, until a little independent Studio picked it up named New Line Cinema. After this movie became a worldwide hit, New Line grew into the powerhouse that would eventually release the likes of Dumb and Dumber, Rush Hour, The Mask and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Thank you turtles.

To me, this movie is what really felt real. The plot story is something I can relate as what happens between the turtle bothers can also happen to us such as fighting between each other. In the end we see that we need each other more than we realize and if we lose it, we take it for granted. That's what made this movie so great.

Something I just noticed about this fight is how there are very few jump cuts. This is something so many modern action flicks suffer from. This fight shines by not only having great set up and characters, but by also being so well shot. Wide angles to show off the combatants and keeping it still on them to establish a rhythm. They only cut when and important maneuver or decisive blow is dealt. Fucking love this movie.

Agreed, and every turtle comes in with their own style. Don- technical & calculating, he tried to get Shredder to move the way he wanted but Shredder had a good defense. Mike- intense & unpredictable, his fight had the highest energy, and they both were countering each other until Shredder got the advantage and was faster. Raph- raw power & impact, had he landed hits he probably could have hurt Shredder but lack of focus led to him expelling all that energy with nothing landing. Leo- precision & skill, he definitely had kill moves planned, very assassin driven, but Shredder got the upper hand by making him lose his focus and give into emotion.

What I love about the choreography here is that it feels epic and authentic. Shredder doesn't move very much because a real fighter with a spear doesn't need to. He is totally in control until he sees Splinter. And the Turtles, being more impulsive and younger are cartwheeling all over. It's also an underrated character beat that Leo is the one to lose his cool and Raph is the one to make the decision to throw away the weapons to keep Leo alive at all costs - something that will lead to their defeat but honours Splinter's teachings. I also love the fact that Casey kicks butt here without stealing the limelight from the Turtles. And finally, Splinter is compassionate, wise AND lethal - it's Shredder's hatred and arrogance that leads to his undoing but Splinter doesn't hesitate to let him do it. Without remorse, pity or anger. Like a master. I just think that people dismissed this movie as just a kid's indulgence but the writer and director took it very seriously, and it has an authentic, mature quality not always found in a movie aimed at kids. Feels more like they aimed at fans of the original comic or at teens.

Agreed on the point about it being more powerful that Leonardo is the one who loses his composure than it being Raphael (and that Raphael who takes on the mantle when Leonardo is incapacitated). best rendition of shredder with him not only being an intimidating badass, but also highly charismatic when addressing the foot clan. @@kyriss12 It's a very shrewd way of interpretating how this Shredder works as the whole theme of family is intrinsic to the movie. It really is, thats why Danny is there, why Casey calls out the Foot for their belief in family, and the Turtles of course. It's a very good Shredder. The best? Dunno, but he is my favourite. I wasn't against him coming back though but could have done without most of the second movie. Shame the 'fifth' movie never came to fruition, with this version of Shredder returning.

Then, after Sonic took to social media to voice their grievances, the studio remade Sonic, thought he looks like a cartoon character in the real world, like that guy you quoted, his actions and interactions with the other characters in the movie felt so real that you could actually feel as though he's really there in the room with them. Hope my comment made sense.

They nailed it 100%. They look so life like once you're watching the movie it's amazing how authentic the entire film is. So dark and gritty at times with a pinch of humor. My only major beef is they showed every aspect and personality of each turtle except Donatello. At least once it should have shown at the very least a grungy looking lab or workshop.

When you watch this as an adult and realize it's actually about the importance of fatherhood. Both Splinter and Shredder adopted their children, but Shredder uses them while Splinter loves them. The turtles dont rally and beat the bad guy. They lose. They lose because the story isn't about learning to stand without your father, it's about how fathers need to be there for their children when it counts.

  • @offworlder1

Exactly, and the whole point was Splinter wanted to have his sons also prepare for when he eventually passes away be it in battle or old age. Mikey is the one who refuses to even speak on it out loud because he doesn’t want to even think about it happening. Shredder also cared about his family but only for what they could do for him. This is why when put to the test Splinter’s way wins because love and caring for your family wins at the end of the day.

Probly one of the greatest if not the greatest comic book films of all time, a perfect combination of the original books and the funny cartoons, a dark yet appropriately serious story, before-its-time fight choreography, and an unexpectedly excellent rendition of the character deisigns that didnt need an ounce of CGI. If this had been released in the superhero movie era, it wouldve been nominated for an academy award.

What's crazy about this while sequence is how the turtles fight shredder separately. Donnie is calculated but can't make use of his weapon. Mikey runs in controlling his weapons but has no plan. Raph goes in aggressively and quickly looses. Leo goes in with control and patience and scores a hit. Perfect reflection of their personalities without even being blatant about it.

  • @JeremiahEcks777

    @JeremiahEcks777

Absolutely true. Everything you said is true. But to add, everybody else's choreography is also in character and on point. Shredder stays still, using short movements like a master, and uses manipulation to get what he wants until he falls to his hatred and looses control. And Splinter just stays stoic and uses his enemy's hatred against him. But there's another beat, that Leo is the one to lose his cool in the end and Raph is the one to choose to throw the weapons away, that Donny and Mikey follow. It's because Raph has made his journey and mastered the darkness in him. Leo is still making that journey. I know the sequels change that up but in just this movie's trajectory, it all works. Oh and Casey's choreography is "Oops". ❤

@@anunc8797ABSOLUTELY... This is a major theme throughout the film. It isn't just the theme of the turtles losing and trying to rescue their "father". It's so much deeper. You can see it through Danny's journey and struggle with his own dad. At one point he observs the Shredder explicitly telling the foot recruits that he's their father. He almost goes down that route but in a later scene with the captured Splinter he's told that his father does care for him and of course they eventually reconcile. This movie was brilliant on so many levels. Amazing film with so many characters finding their way throughout the journey.

There is really good writing behind this fight. If you watch closely, you'll see the nuance. When Donatello comes in, Shredder's moves are calculated, outsmarting everything one move ahead. Michaelangelo immediately starts flailing about with his chaotic nunchaku. Shredder's moves indicate he knows he has to go on the offensive, as the longer he spends in the fight, the more likely he is to be randomly hit. Raphael comes in too aggressive with the jump kick, and Shredder uses his momentum against him, essentially flipping him with his own kick. Only Leonardo has the training and focus to get a hit on Shredder (2 in fact, but the last is against his shoulder armor). Shredder realized before he got cut (as evidenced by his strained grunting) that Leonardo is skilled enough to go toe to toe with him. When his arm gets cut, he understands he has to change his tempo, exposing his weakness to get a hit on Leonardo. He's essentially used all of their weaknesses as were foreshadowed in the film against them. And of course then realizes if he kills Leonardo he wins the fight. Unfortunately for him, he also has a weakness, and he falls for it as well. It's a bit ironic that the chaotic nunchaku that he so craftily disarmed from the least mature turtle, was used against him in a very wise, calculated manner that was likely reminiscent of that of the style of Splinter's master, Hamato Yoshi.

I agree with you 💯. I like the dark shadowy direction they went with with the original Ninja Turtles. It makes the movie feel more raw and authentic unlike these newer fake, friendly, cringy CGI ninja turtle movies. If they remake another Ninja turtles movie like the original, mixed in with better martial arts Choreography and keep the dark ominous vibe from the original, we will have a winner guaranteed!!!!!

That's actually the psychology behind the character, Orokou Saki is a raging narcissist. He kills a woman when he can't have her after stalking her all the way to another country. He picks a fight with April and orders her NOT to report about The Foot Clan thus bringing attention to The Foot Clan. When it comes to his appearance he carries himself like royalty or a nobleman so having a scarred face would be enough to send him in a blind rage. Let alone he was charging what he believed to be a feeble, elderly rat...so...

I love how the mood changes in this fight; they're all joking and laughing at first, even Leo. By the time they realize they're in over their heads, it's too late. They run a gamut of emotions here; levity, confusion, panic, anger then total fear. Fantastic storytelling. Great way to remind us that these guys are just kids and their emotions are all over the place.

My favorite section of this clip is from the point where Leonardo says “this guy knows where Splinter is” to the end of Leonardo’s solo with Shredder. The turtles could have totally won this fight if they didn’t let him get under their skin. If that happened though then we wouldn’t have gotten to see how bad ass Splinter was so it works out I guess.

I don't think the cgi is that bad honestly. It's just the turtles look so grotesque when compared to any other appearance. They look so extreme that's it's jarring. My problem with the 2014 films is simply they are all spectacle and lacks any heart. It lacks the personal moments such as when we see the turtles dealing with grief. Even the final battle in 90's film has more emotional weight than the 2014 version. That line of dialogue between Leo and Shredder when he taunts him, shows the depth of love and fury each turtle is feeling at that moment.

This movie was something I'll never forget, as I was 6-years old. I really felt the dynamic between the brothers, especially when Splinter, their father figure was kidnapped, and the growth Leo, Raph, and even Mikey got. There were also two books and audio cassettes "The First Battle" and "The Final Lesson", which are taken from the movie, and where Mikey...Mikey the one who is always there for his family to brighten their day goes to Leo literally a shell of who he is, and tells Leo "I can't stand this pain Leo", referencing how much he missed Splinter.
