I love this phone! It asks the child questions and if they take too long to answer, teddy says, “hello, are you there?”

Cool! I've been looking for an actual video about the Teddy Ruxpin telephone specifically.

Man, now I really want one even though I’m only 18!

What a trip down memory lane. It's been about 27 or 28 years since I had batteries in my Teddy Ruxpin Electronic Telephone, and there was a lot I didn't remember about it. Like the leaving a message thing and that you could talk to either Teddy or Grubby.

I know right

When I first heard about this toy phone, I just thought it was one of those toy phones that plays a phrase of speech each time you press a button, my brother had a Bob The Builder toy phone which did just that, and this was back in 2003 I think, and I've seen others that do something similar. The features this phone has a pretty interesting for a toy made in 1990. Regarding your comments on the speech quality, that sound quality is pretty typical of toys like this from the late 80s and early 90s. Remember how Speak & Spell sounded in the late 70s? Compare that to something like Super Speak & Spell, or some of the talking toys made by VTech. Also compare it to toys like the Worlds Of Wonder talking Julie doll, they all have a slightly synthetic quality to their voices.

I don't think they do, I'm pretty sure they've stopped making Teddy Ruxpin, which is unfortunate.

Oh my gosh this is so cute!!! I vaguely remember seeing this at Toys R Us but I wasn't a huge phone chatter when I was little so I don't remember ever asking my parents for this. What a sweet concept to have Teddy and Grubby teach phone manners. I love the informational book and its tips about phone manners and being polite 😍 "Do you have time to talk?" Also, how interesting that they mentioned video phones as being a possibility for the future!

The voice sounds like it uses a Texas Instrments LPC chip.

That's right. These chips were used for learning computers in the 80s and 90s too. and it was used for hasbro's bingo bear. and tonka used this chips for their hush little baby doll, that made crying, giggling and sucking noises.

@@sonjatheien5409 Golden (Western Publishing Company) also released a Girl Talk electronic telephone which uses the same Texas Instruments LPC chip and featured the voices of the girls AT&T soon entered the talking telephone industry with their talking Mickey Mouse electronic telephone Tiger Electronics recently launched a Clueless hands free electronic telephone for tween and teen girls

Correct, pretty much the standard for digital reproduction of recorded voice in toys at that time.

I have all threw versions of teddy ruxpin grubby and backpack toys teddy ruxpin phil baron will always be my childhood teddy ruxpin

I'm not sure if anyone provided insight on this yet, but the "synthesised / modulated" nature of the voices is indeed a limitation of the time. Due to memory constraints for storing many voice samples. To get around this, most toys of the era used an algorithm called Linear Predictive Coding (LPC) to compress speech. LPC basically runs multiple regression analyses on the original voice signal to do a kind of data reduction or factor analysis, working out what component phonemes can be applied to recreate the waveform in a way that approximates the original but with much less complexity/variation. LPC was both used to synthesis output speech and interpret input speech in interactive toys like the Furby, and even Worlds of Wonder's "Julie" and Playmates "Jill" before that. LPC has a very distinctive electronic sound to it, which is why a lot of people think those toys' speech sounds 'similar' in some ways. In sum, you *are* "talking to a robot version of Teddy", because LPC has not edited the original sound, but rather generated a whole new sound in its place. It goes without saying that The Adventure Series tapes never suffered from poor sound reproduction because the tapes are the storage medium themselves.

@@GrundoGazette Agreed. I always loved Teddy's sweet natured and vibrant voice, one of the things that makes his character most memorable and appealing!

That's much more elaborate than I expected it to be, thought it was just licensed regular phone with a decal on it like Mickey and Garfield heh. The voice synthesis aspect was needed for compression sake at that time, only way to get digital voice track samples small enough for the memory storage of the era. Sure it's not MP3 good but it sounds better than the Intellivoice module "B-17 Bomber.".😁

What size batteries does this unit take, and what does it do when the batteries go flat?

This phone takes AA’s. I didn’t use it long enough for the batteries to die, so I’m not sure how it behaves when that happens.

Excuse me Sir. I got the Roku Channel and The Adventures Of Teddy Ruxpin is on there like you said but I noticed only 10 episodes are missing. Are they removing the show?
