Teddy Riley And The New Jack Swing Movement

Музыка

The history of the New Jack Swing Movement by Teddy Riley and many other New Jack Swing acts.
New Jack Swing or Swingbeat is a fusion genre spearheaded by Teddy Riley and other producers that became popular from the late 1980s into the early 1990s. Its influence, along with Hip Hop, seeped into pop culture and was the definitive sound of the inventive Black New York club scene. It fuses the rhythms, samples, and production techniques of Hip Hop and Dance-Pop with the Urban Contemporary Sound of R&B. The #NewJackSwing style developed as many previous music styles did, by combining elements of older styles with newer sensibilities. It used R&B style vocals sung over Hip Hop and Dance-Pop style influenced instrumentation. The sound of New Jack Swing comes from the Hip Hop "Swing" Beats created by drum machine, and hardware samplers, which was popular during the Golden Age of Hip Hop, with contemporary R&B style singing.

Today in History: Keith Sweat released "I Want Her", Monday 7th September 1987, "I Want Her became the first New Jack Swing track and on January 30, 1988, “I Want Her” became the first New Jack Swing hit to reach #1 on Billboard’s Top 100 R&B/Hip-Hop Single charts. I Want Her” quickly solidified him into the R&B/New Jack Swing artist he is today. Initially, Keith and co-producer Teddy Riley collaborated on this track because Sweat told Teddy that he didn’t have enough material for the album; it was Teddy’s suggestion that the two Harlem natives worked together. They ended up writing the lyrics over the phone while Keith was working his day job at the stock exchange, helping to ignite the making of a classic album in Make It Last Forever. The duo eventually penned 6 of the 8 tracks included on the album, including the single after which he named the album: “Make It Last Forever”. Long Live The #NewJackSwing Movement, Long Live #NJS4LIFE!

This video was epic for me in ways I can't even explain! Imagine being a kid in a foreign country (did not even understand the English language) and listening to many of the songs featured in this video... Dancing to them, being moved by them, being hypnotized by the beats and the melodies... but never really aware of the faces and talent behind the music. New Jack Swing being a term that wasn't even mentioned or understood in my home country. It was just GOOD MUSIC to me, the name didn't matter!!! Fast forward a few decades and now in the USA as an adult, I learn about this man behind the sound and the hits that SOOOOO MAANY incredible artists were part of. I was ignorant to the impact and the influence that Teddy brought to the music industry as a whole. Today I can say with confidence that I not only became a fan of hip-hop and R&B because of Teddy Riley, but it is the reason why I became a DJ and performed for over 20 years playing this music and a bunch more to the masses. This music changed my life. I am in awe at this realization and so thankful to the musicians and Mr. Riley for the music and inspiration. Not only a true legend in music but apparently a wholesome human being that cared about his peers and looked out for other talents in the industry. ❤ What a blast of nostalgia! What an amazing era for music!!! Thank you and God Bless ya'll!
