In Piper's book, he said that Freddie Blassie later apologized to Piper for stuffing his bagpipes. He claimed that Piper was so good that they felt threatened by him. They saw the potential and were looking out for themselves.

My buddies and I would sit outside the landing strip strip bar in Romulus Michigan right by the airport and we would sneak out on our bikes to meet the wrestlers outside when they would arrive. Ted was always cool to us kids. Thanks for that ted

What a wonderful memory I would have loved to meet those guys, only saw the WWF once in Dublin in 91, MDM lost to the bulldog, undertaker vs Sid was the main event, Jake was there bushwackers with Andre, Roddy Piper stole the show, what a reaction from the crowd, God bless him, special times

@@jshiner7298 the cool thing is kids can still do it today. If you live in Romulus Michigan show up at the landing strip after any wwe event and they will be there. The scary thing was we had to ride through a trail by the cemetery.

All the guys from those days actually say that Piper was a very quiet, very polite kid in the locker room. Deferential to the older wrestlers. I doubt he pissed anyone off in this instance, it was just bullying.

Is it possible because a lot of wrestlers back then worked in different territories that they knew or knew of Ted’s dad? That knowledge could have been enough to make them think twice about messing with him.

That’s what I’ve always heard it was Classy Freddie Blassie!

  • @yardape99

The quote from Piper was that Blassie said, "you're too good," while Blassie and Albano were givihim the business back stage. Piper was 20 or 21 at the time. How many undersized heels were given a shot in the WWWF back then at his age? For sure Blassie was trying to keep Piper out of the biggest money territory and must have thought Piper didn't pay enough dues yet.

Seems most likely he was just a kid and an easy target. There was a lot of hazing of anyone who didn't have an in by all accounts and he was barely out of his teens with no contacts there. No one was going to protect him and there'd be no consequences for fucking with him, so they did.

@@trinityj1 I remember back in 1979 when Piper was all of a sudden on WOR and just came out playing the bagpipes. No buildup or interview while pretty much gone right away and not memorable. It came off confusing and that's usually where you loose fans. How little did we know how great Roddy was just a few more years later.

I only found it because I subscribe to some other wrestling channels and it popped up in my feed. The podcast title doesn't have either Ted's name in it or the Million Dollar Man.
