Tech Talk: Carburetion Questions

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this Tech Talk video Carl answers questions that we have received over the years about carburetors for single cylinder motorcycle engines, most notably the DR650.
Some of these questions are, What's the difference between a vacuum carb and a flat slide carb?, What jetting changes should I make for elevation changes?, De-cel pop, what can I do about it?
We are also proud to announce that we have teamed up with Hippo Hands a small U.S. based company. They sell high quality hand covers for a variety of motorcycles. If you ride in the colder months or wish that you could but, your hands get too cold, consider a set of Hippo Hands for your bike. Heated grips alone aren't always enough to keep your hands toasty warm. Check them out on our website and get you a set before Fall & Winter set in.

My DR650 with the Procycle JET, L.V. exhaust with just the snorkel removed is AWESOME. No running issues at all. Big power gains.

Great information as always Carl! I did the ProCycle jet kit and air box mod to my 2020 DR650 and it completely changed the bike! You guys rock!! Cheers!

Great video, thanks! I have your TM40 on one DR650 and your jet kit in the other DR, both work great and they are quite different. I don't think a pumper is the only answer, nor even the best answer because it depends on what the rider wants. Many are quite happy with just the jet kit and airbox mod, others want that instant response only a pumper carb (or FI) can give. Some owners are happy with the factory setup and see no reason to change anything. I sometimes wish I was that way, content with a completely stock bike, it is much less expensive. But once we find out how much better a bike can be with a little time and money.... Steep slope! Suspension first, always.

Well said! I've done all the riding position, suspension, tires, lighting/battery mods on my DR650 but haven't touched the engine, exhaust, fuel or intake system. It's just so reliable (and quiet) that I hate to mess with it. The lack of power only really bothers me when I have someone on the back.

Thank you for your comment. Having both bikes setup differently truly gives you some great insight into the differences a pumper carb vs. a re-jet can offer. We agree with you completely, not every setup is the right setup for every rider. In its stock form, the DR is a very capable bike and it's okay to keep it that way. We have found that a good number of riders feel that way until they get onto a DR with a modification done to it, then realize they too want to upgrade / change something on their bike.

There is nothing wrong with keeping the motor stock. The DR motor will be most reliable in its stock form but, if you do want to get more power out of the bike, reliability begins to drop as with any motor receiving power mods. Re-jetting wont affect anything with reliability and depending on the jet kit you purchase, you will not have to modify the airbox.

Koty swapped out his Cali DR650 stock carb on his 2019. It was surging and leaking out of the overflow at like 4k miles. Put your guys tm40 on it and it changed the entire bike 100% for the better. Completely different bike. Wheelies with ease now, better mileage and cranks like a dream cold now. The plastic components that hold the float etc in that stock California emission carb are pretty much junk. Thanks for the video guys!!

Thank you for the kind words. The stock carb is pretty good for what it is considering it can't really be changed from factory because of emissions requirements. Re-jetting helps a lot but, as you mentioned it just doesn't compare to a flat slide pumper carb if you're searching for more performance. We've been watching your videos as well, great job!

I’ve always wondered how the TM40 compares to the Lectron? BTW, thanks for 15 or so stickers 😅… I might have a parts addiction!

  • @TeamProCycle

Haha, motorcycles are an addiction worth having. The TM40 on a DR650 is a more consistent carb terms of tuning performance throughout the rev range that we have found when compared to testing a Lectron years ago. They have since come out with a revised version of their 4T carb. We have one of these new carbs on hand and will be testing it soon on our DR650 (790 motor) to give it another go. The technology in the Lectron sounds good, but we will see how it goes. We will make an install and test video when we have put in enough seat time.

Thank you, we're glad that you enjoyed it. We played with a Lectron years ago and it seemed a bit twitchy when riding through the different RPM ranges. We did get our hands on a new generation Lectron for the DR650 and will be giving it another go and this time it will be mated to our 790 big bore.

Take all the voodoo out of it, an Air Fuel ratio instrument will tell you. My TW runs 12.5 to 1 wide open, and 13-14 to 1 during all other operation areas, Idle is a bit fat at 11.5-12 to 1. .008" shim on the needle makes a difference.

Glad you found something that works well for your TW. We just installed a WEGO3 wideband setup to our TW200 to help us dial in different jetting setups for a few various types of performance mod setups.
