“In early 2020, Curt and I sat down together with just a couple of acoustic guitars. The first time in decades. We needed a meeting of minds, a coming together psychically. We were literally going back to the drawing board looking for some depth, heart and soul with which to complete our album. Curt came up with this simple folk/country riff, a little bit Dylan, a little bit Johnny Cash, and then we were off. It was the complete opposite of what we had been trying to do for many years - searching for the elusive, modern hit single. We felt suddenly unencumbered, free if you like, no longer worrying about the market, about success, but drawing on influences from our childhoods. It was at this point that the whole album started opening up. ‘No Small Thing’ was the key, the thing that turned a red light green,” - Roland Orzabal
"No Small Thing" feels like it could have been a song from a seventies or sixties acoustic folk album with how the track starts. The fact that we felt confident enough to go from there to the end of the song to where it’s just absolute mayhem speaks to that sense of freedom, and that’s our comfort zone musically.” - Curt Smith

Lyrics:
Get your sweets from the candyman
Get your truth from the shelf
Don’t buy into the fairy tale
Just be good to yourself
‘Cos you know that I love you girl
You’re my way out of hell
But I’ve just one more song to sing
One more story to tell
When I’m tired of the bright lights
When I’m tired of the wine
I’ll go down to Wheal Mexico
To the depths of the mine
When I’m forty years older
When I’m wrinkled and wise
I will trade all my liberty
For that look in your eyes
Reason gonna bind you
Cripple and confine you
Listen as your poor heart breaks
Take a trip to America
Let the wind blow right through your hair
We’ll buy beer and some hope to share
Everyday
‘Cos freedom is no small thing
We punish the child for flying too high
For rushing like the wind
Reason gonna bind you
Cripple and confine you
Listen as your poor heart breaks
Stars are like diamonds
We fly across the sky for them
No one’s gonna change who we are
‘Cos freedom is no small thing
We punish the child for flying too high
For rushing like the wind

I'll be honest: 'No Small Thing' surprised me quite a bit. It's something different, even with its 60-70s country flavour in the main riff. It's iridescent, multifaceted and swaying in its progression and gradually grows to literally explode in the second half. These two gentlemen never cease to surprise us.

Funny, I actually thought that same thing the first time I listened to The Hurting album a long time ago. Never thought in 2022 that feeling would be at least quadrupled by what--IMO--is their best and most complete album yet. Every single song nails it in some way. Insane how good these guys are this. And they seem to make it look easy.

I am a 56 year old man. Loved many Tears for fears songs right from the beginning. The intro I thought oh no they have gone all cheesy country? But the song evolves into a powerhouse. This one one just broke me😂. What a powerful song and message and video. If you do no like this song you have no soul! Another masterpiece of song writing here ! Lyrics are about not letting the child element inside of you go and not to fall in to all the crap that is being preached to us on a daily basis from media etc etc. Lots of metaphors in the Lyrics. That’s the way I love song quality writing. Just Awesome!

This is a song that is difficult to explain. When first heard I was uncertain, but now it ranks as one of my all time TFF favourites. It is unlike something you will hear often, it is a song that is enriched with time, it starts simple and then reaches an orgasmic crescendo. It has a depth of soul and character you will struggle to find in any modern music. I am truly grateful. Thanks TFF, JZ.

When I listened to "The Tipping Point" a few weeks ago, I thought "there you guys are back to top form". It was one of the best musical experiences I had in a long, long time. Now you come up with THIS and it's still better. The deceiving, totally atypical (for TFF) country-style bit at the beginning, which then grows into this paroxysmal bit ... Guys, your new music is one of the best things to happen in this f***ed-up time.

Stunning video, where we are in the world right now, sometimes it’s easy to forget. This is a powerful reminder and the kind of video that leaves you awestricken. Honestly, how do they do it? I realise its been 20 years since their last studio album and Tears’ have had ample time to get things right. But it’s not as if they’ve not worked at all making new music during that time, what with the ‘speed dating’ reference and incomplete abandoned albums. I much prefer an artist from my day to refrain (or should that be resist temptation?) from blending the incompatible dna of today’s artists with an established band who have nothing left to prove. The dynamics and leadership get lost in the foggy mist of collaborations and things become messy. I’m so pleased that Roland and Curt went with their instinct otherwise they’d be ending up with irrelevant dance floor fillers (feat. this and that) that wouldn’t last in our memories. I love songs that are charismatic and urge me to take notice of every guitar strum, tempo change and (in the case of No Small Thing’) the exquisite operatic voiceover. One small thing Tears For Fears are not and that’s a ‘dance outfit’. So far I’m adoring The Tipping Point 100%. Both songs have resonated with me and I cannot stop the lyrics and tunes from bouncing around in my head. If songs make me think about them then they have already become a resounding success! I cannot wait for the new album to drop and I’m already thinking what other surprises have they got in store for us? Looking forward to receiving the varied coloured vinyl on order and watching them perform in all their glory at Warwick Castle next year. Congratulations guys!

Some bands have three or four great songs that hit all the right notes and emotions then never caption that magic again. I'm 53 and grew up playing the drums and practicing all those great 80's songs that had so much depth to them. This song is something you hear at the end of a movie with the credits running.
