Tearing Apart my Truck Camper (the renovation begins)

I wasn't planning on doing a total demo and rebuild of my Bigfoot 6-11 camper, however, unforeseen circumstances forced me to make a tough decision. This is the first part of my latest renovation series - let's see if we can get this done quickly and get back out there on the road!

Good luck with the rebuild. My brother in law had to tear down his bigfoot c8 right to the bare bones and he's renovating it right now. It's a big job! If you don't have to don't tear the ceiling down, they are a pain to rebuild correctly. Also the structure of the camper comes from the sandwich panel design. The insulation is glued to the fibreglass and the paneling to the insulation. That's what gives it the rigidity so keep that in mind when you are building. The upper cabinets, fridge, and cabinets by the bed give the roof strength as well so you might need to build something back in the spots you cut out.

Keep in mind that condensation is unavoidable in a small space. Even if you don't have any leaks, just inhabiting a camper regularly in cold weather can lead to this. What happens is the condensation slowly builds up in places like insulation or against walls in contact with the cold outside world and then never leaves. It's not an easy problem to solve unfortunately because it's just basic physics. Foresty Forest is dealing with similar problems and even tried installing a woodstove in his van to dry it out.

Needs to be treated like a boat hull. Havelock Wool which will dry out and not retain the condensation, HullBlanket headliner & Boat Koozie stick-on insulation and try not to completely seal in cabinets or other compartments. If this is the case in the build, install mini round vents at either end of a sealed compartment.

    Ventilation is key.

Another thing to keep in mind is that during cooking a byproduct of the combustion of propane is water vapor. Not to mention moisture released from the food as it cooks. So its always advisable to run ventilation while cooking and as Calvin mentioned just inhabiting a space adds considerable moisture to the air and it will eventually find its way to the cooler parts of the space where it will condense. That appears to be what we’re seeing here, not necessarily water leaking in from the outside. I’ve found that keeping an electric heater set at a fairly low temperature in my travel trailer in between outings with the ceiling vent slightly cracked open is effective at keeping condensation at bay especially during the cooler months of the year. That said, I’m looking forward to seeing your progress on the renovation as well as the future adventures we’ll be going on with you (all 100,000+ of us!) Thank You Jonathan! Please continue. 🙏

I live full time in my truck camper, and every morning, the first thing I do is crack windows to ventalate from the night before. I also sacrificed a large clothes closet that was centrally located in my truck camper for a custom-built woodstove. Solved 90-percent of my condensation issues with that one improvement. Propane simply adds too much moisture. Using fans and ventilating when cooking is also key. I also leave cupboard doors slightly ajar except when on the road. Living full-time in my rig enables me to monitor everything daily, thereby addressing moisture before it builds up. Preferring mountains to desert also means being extra vigilant for moisture issues and addressing them before damage is done. I think a lot of folks don't properly prep their campers and RVs when not in use, thereby allowing damage to occur while in storage. Just my two cents from years of truck camper life. 🙃

Part of the moisture problem is no doubt due to your use of unvented propane devices such as the Mr Buddy and your gas stove. For every pound of propane you burn, nearly two pounds of water are added to the interior atmosphere. That's on top of your breathing and perspiration. Best thing to do is add (or replace) an outside vented heater. A vented heater with a heat exchanger can dry out the interior without adding more moisture. Either a propane or diesel heater will do the job. Thanks for your entertaining channel. I look forward to watching the new build.

I agree with the other comments about cold weather condensation. In a small closed space like a camper there is no way to avoid this issue. Cooking in cold weather should really be avoided. Even your respiration is a cause - tents in cold weather without proper ventilation will have the walls covered with moisture in the morning. On the other side choose your new materials carefully. As you see wood products are just sponges for moisture so they should be avoided in space enclosed and adjacent to a cold outside wall. Your floor is a good example - the wood gets very cold from the outside and on the inside the moist air finds the wood and the cold condenses the water vapor to liquid water in the plywood - just like a glass of ice water on a summer day with beads on the outside - except this is inside out with the cold outside and the warm inside. I would try for a closed cell foam for insulation adjacent to the fiberglass wall. Sandwiched walls with wood in them will become cold so avoid this - use some solid material that does not absorb moisture. Not sure what is appropriate for a camper but avoid wood. You can use wood for cabinets as long as they are separated from the cold and not adjacent to cold walls. HTH

I’ve lived in a lot of vehicles over my life and like others say condensation over time just destroys the interiors. I’ve had walls in caravans literally dissolve becoming spongy without a single exterior leak. Saying that the only thing I found that cured all of it was having a wood burner . The type of heat it puts out keeps everything dry and even cured some of my homes that had just started to go a bit . Don’t know what your plans are but it became my first job as I moved into any new vehicle. Good luck with the refurbishment 👍

I'm following now with great interest. I just bought a 23 year old truck camper that has some obvious water damage. I am very familiar with how to repair it, and I am ready to get started. I'm reluctant to go "full-send" on the project for fear of what I may find. I am doing the "knock test" to find where solid material begins and flimsy material ends, but I know that isn't the most comprehensive test. It will get me by though. I plan on doing a complete rennovation in stages, addressing the obvious stuff and most critical structural stuff first; the rotten wall, corner, jack mounts, tub and floor. I'm removing a 120 pound generator and the 6 gallon water heater right away. Neither work, so they won't be missed. I found a used tankless water heater for as much as a new gas control valve would cost, so the water heater is a done deal. Off grid power will ultimately be a 2000W pure sine wave inverter, LifePO4 batteries and 200W of solar. The whole system will weigh less than the generator, won't make any noise and won't require any maintenance other than keeping the solar panels clean.

YEEHAW!!! NOW THIS IS EXCITING!! You can do whatever you want now! I will agree that there will always be a level of moisture, but mitigating the damage is very doable. We have a small Tab trailer (the German model from the beginning, a 2008) and what we've found is setting up a tea light terracotta candle heater really helps keep things dry. It's such a small place that it actually does a pretty good job heating things up. Now we are not the kind of campers who come in during a rainy winter trip and strip all our clothes off and relay on a heater. We have a tent attached room on the side that we usually use, and if we use the trailers heater, open the door and window on the tent side, it will heat everything up. But if we close the doors and windows, and just heat the camper, the tea light heater does a find job of heating and drying things out a bit. You can also get a very small dehumidifier, they're cheap and don't pull a lot of electricity.

I think you may have water entering somewhere other than where you pointed out in your video, in order to get the subfloor so saturated. I'd be sure to inspect the seams where the 2 halves mate for leakage before you begin the rebuild. Otherwise you may have the same issue down the road (no pun intended). Looking forward to seeing the progress! 👍

I recommend Dualex channel for design ideas (my husband echoes in the background, "oh yeah, dualex"). I have watched many vlogs on what heat works best in small van rv bus spaces, mini wood-stoves and diesel heaters seem to create the least condensation in a small space according to most seasoned boondocking vloggers, but each type has drawbacks of some sort. Thanks Jonathan, looking forward to seeing what you come up with in your build and how it works for your needs 🙂

With all that hidden water it's probably a good thing that your electrical system wasn't working. Glad you weren't injured during the ball joint failure. Doing spin outs with the camper on is probably a terrible idea going forward. It may be fun, but can't be good for it. I know you'll do an amazing job on the rebuild and am looking foward to seeing it. Take care and God bless.

Jonathan, under the shop lighting conditions, the video displays banding. You will need to make sure your shutter speed is multiple of 1/60, 1/120. 1/240. It's because of the refresh rate of the lights and Hertz of the electrical service in the United States. As I type this, I *think 1/30 will work also. You can do the research, search rolling shutter/banding in video.
