Thank God they didn't call it an evinrude. I cannot believe this is what they decided to put their money on instead of the g2. They should have just taken all the marketing money and development from this and put it into good parts on the G2 along with refining it. They could have taken a 2 year break and got the G2 right maybe even consult mercury for some help. So disappointed.

Actually I think the last year of the G2 was pretty much figured out, it even had some performance upgrades that nobody knew about, or was even talked about. Such a great motor that never had a chance to prove itself. Very disappointed to see it go. This new Rotax is the 3 cylinder G2 which was a fantastic small motor but adding the extra 90 degree turn will likely pull to much power from it. I’m looking forward to the 6 cylinder version of this. I think this new design will be fantastic on pontoon boats, but can’t see the benefits over a G2 on a fishing boat yet👍🏻

They need to bring back Evinrude with a 105 or 110 degree prop shaft !! That will allow more stern lift without wedges or a canted transom, and as the motor is trimmed out the prop moves back through the arc to give the effect of set-back. Go with a inline six four stroke and it will have a natural balance and smoothness. hang a blower on the side and go like stink. Thanks Andy for all you do. Jim
All I want is a gear case with multiple gears. That way we can possibly be more efficient and maybe even a little faster.

It probably will not be warrantied for saltwater. Its the next volvo stern.
My initial understanding when Project Ghost was first discussed, was that it would be a hybridization of the Rotax jet with the G2 powerhead. That might well make some sense; this design begs further explanation.

First time boat buying looking for a pontoon. Saw the Rotax and immediately raised an eyebrow
Wow, I have an old 1976 75 hp Johnson that never misses a beat, it just keeps on going & going
I was a diehard Evinrude fan for 30yrs. I loved them because Ole Evinrude was the original engine builder for Harley Davidson in 1903. He left H-D after a couple years to build Outboard boat motors. I was so excited when BRP bought the Evinrude name because I knew they have the money and engineering to build and design a great outboard, but just dropped the Evinrude name. I switched to Yamaha. I love my new Yamaha F70. But I was excited to hear BRP was bringing back a outboard. I naturally figured they would name it Evinrude because they own a 100 plus year old name that everyone knows. This Rotax is a bad idea. Plus Rotax dropped the 582 Aircraft engine $8,000 dollars, they dropped all 2 stroke aircraft engines. That killed the light sport aircraft engine market. They had the market cornered. Now you have to buy their 912 4 stroke that’s over $20k today. So the days of building a cheap light sport aircraft are gone. And nothing took off like a 582 2 stroke. They was great for short takeoffs in the back country.

This is the future of engines for deck boats. I have a Hurricane with a Yamaha 200, would love the stern space where the engine cowling is. Sounds like he is coming at it from a fishing boat perspective. If it makes it to gen 3 it should be solid.

When he said "Stealth technology" coffee shot out both my mouth and nose. Yeah it's a never before seen design but that's about it. This "UnderBoard" will only be purchased by people of means. Someone who never gets his hands dirty. I grew up on a lake back in the 1970s Myself and all of my friends dreamed of owning a sleek low profile boat, preferably a tunnel hull, with an inline 6 cylinder tower of power standing tall dark and handsome on the transom. For those of us who still like the somewhat striking appearance of those old Mercs these Rotax engines come up a little short.
Andy, I saw on one of your other blogs about Mercury laying off 300 people. You were trying to get with Mercury people to get answers about Mercury's future direction. I saw online a rather eye-opening 40HP outboard engine that was being tested which uses a new type if rotary engine made by a company called Liquid Piston XTS210. This is lighter, simpler, and has great characteristics for a future production engine and had the name Mercury on it. If you get to talk to the Mercury people, ask how that project is coming along.
The engine is designed around a very scientific mathematical calculation based on swept volume of the piston and in inefficiency of the IC Eng.
When you say the etecs popped, anything you recommend maintenance wise or nothing can be done? Only have a 60 on a tin bass boat, but just checking

@@SoFloCamejo understandable, i just think if they're going to redo an outboard like this and its a new and inventive outboard to change the boating industry and you're coming from a motor company who owns trolling motors, GPS fish finders, kayaks, etc. you have the money to make something newer motor to put on the market that can match competitors because itll ball down to those who actually believe in it. like for example, i was a believer in Mercury since i had owned one for 3 years using it but over time, i dealt with Mercury issues i had to fix myself. since i have upgraded to a yamaha, i believe more into that motor because those are more durable than a mercury (in my opinion). Andy put out a video recently on a brand new Pro XS that is spit firing metal from its gears when starting up the motor. that is alarming and would make anyone stray from a merc. im not saying all Merc motors do that but to a consumer, that would make me want to switch to another motor. Evinrude has made only one fourstroke motor based on what Andy has researched and they didnt even make it. its about time they got on their A-game and be on competition with the outboard industry to give consumers options because honestly there should be no reason for the monopoly game to be involved with boating or fishing. fishing can be as expensive as you want it to be. yeah E-tec's are good im sure since those are somewhat popular, but there is a reason why your most common motors on boats today are either Mercury, Yamaha, or possibly Honda (even though Yamaha is owned by Honda)
I'll keep my Barletta Corsa 23U with 200 Merc, thank you. I did own a bulletproof 1985 Evinrude 70HP with about a million hours on it. It's still being used by its current owner.
The Alumacraft dealers I spoke with all said they loved the boat improvements. Ride/ build/ features. None of them like the “under-board”. I think 90% will be standard outboards as long as BRP will allow it.
Maybe the half submerged was an design to fix the over heating issue on the etec.
"what's wrong with an ... outboard? why does that not work?" If you applied the same logic to props, no one would ever invent a Sharrow design. BRP has always been an innovative company.
@TeamMarineService
Жыл бұрын
There are 2 glaring problems with the design that anybody who's been around boats knows are big No No's and for BRP's 22 year old window licking engineers to not be able to figure it out is truly sad. 1. Water will ALWAYS win and get past those 16 bolts and seal flooding the engine compartment. 2. Boat batteries ALWAYS die, the Rotax Underboard uses a water evacuation pump to keep the water out from flooding the engine compartment. Now you hopefully understand how dumb this it! ;)
Your honesty and rant on BRP was hilarious and true. What a terrible idea for an outboard. It was probably designed by the EPA. Wait until they come out with outboards with exhaust fluid tanks like DEF systems on today’s diesel trucks. They already ruined the trucking industry, the boating industry will be next. BRP probably got a kickback from the government to build that garbage. Thanks for video I agree 💯 🇺🇸

Can't wait till the 250 version comes out!! lol
That semi-submersible under-board is going to be a boon with the narc submarines trying to reach the Sea of Cortés with their bounty!

Some efficiency has to be lost by adding another set of gears too. More complicated it seems too.

Yes we forgot to mention that. We were told around 16-18% lost

Great video. Thanks for the review. I would love a great new evinrude. Maybe Tesla should make a 250???
Under board hahaha!! To dam funny knee slapper lol !!
I mean to be fair its pretty clear why they did this, they wanted a low profile outboard so they wouldn’t have a tower of power standing in your way. They accomplished that, but at what cost? Also its hilarious watching this guy try and understand how this outboard will lift out of the water when its literally the same pivot as a regular outboard.
@TeamMarineService

Pivot's and lifts the rear deck?
@MarcStollmeyer

@@TeamMarineService the clamp on looks very traditional, pivoting at the top of the clamp/mount. Granted, the whole deck above the engine thing is weird, it does look like its designed to lift out of the way but not clear yet if it automatically does this or passively, and what happens if someone is standing on it.
Reminds me vaguely of the Force L-Drive
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
Yea, when they couldn't get the ACE900 engine crank PTO coupling to hold, they made it "replaceable". After that, they just couldn't seem to put grease in it. AND THEN they decided putting full pressure lube to it was a better idea. Hey......IT ONLY TOOK THEM 5+ YEARS to figure it out! That's just one marine platform...How long will it take them to figure this out, and how many parts will be serviceable, yet built to last?

You are exactly 100% totally without a doubt correct!!!!!! We just shake our heads at a lot of BRP products!

@@TeamMarineService don't get me wrong, they are FUN machines. BUT!! When 95% of MARINE RENTAL companies around the WORLD use Yamaha, there is a reason. You can't have innovation, without homework.
Big Al running BRP too. Sorry, couldn't resist that one.
it be cool with a jet drive for the rivers or shallow stuff
I agree 100% with you. What a joke this new look. I have had every Johnson and Evinrude and still love them to this day. You do not get too many chances for a second chance, but this in my opinion is a mistake. My last tour to Evinrude all was bet one Etech. Mercury has eaten BRPs lunch with putting the Mercury on many of their boats and selling the combo package. If BRP wants to get back into the outboard business do it with a reliable 4 stroke engine line up from 3-300 HP. Don’t forget 9.9 and such. Make the small engines in AMERICA Tohatsu should not be sold under Evinrude or Mercury badge. Yamaha and Honda are such strong players because of product Quality. I want a made in America lineup of outboards that will employ Americans with the high Quality of Yamaha and Honda. I recently visited a plant in Asia and was invited to tour a monster outboard company. Don’t tell me we can’t out perform this crap with our technology. I still covet my 9.9 2004 Johnson one of the best outboards I have ever owned. People will pay for a great USA made outboard and aftermarket service. Let’s face it our outlook on quality needs to change. If BRP survives this offering ( and I hope for them that they do) please revisit Evinrude and Johnson and repeating myself make a classic outboard under the badges of Evinrude and Johnson. While I applauded the innovation of Mercury and its founder, I am still a Evinrude guy. Like Ford vs Chevy a great GMC vs Chrysler that is your own personal choice. All are great! But when on the water and your motor takes a dump you can’t walk home. As an aside let’s also bring back a few wood boats.

Well said buddy!
I stopped at my local Alumacraft dealer 2 days ago to order a new boat. They pushed really hard to sell me on how great, cool and innovative this new motor is. I just can't get over how ugly it is! And the rear deck that goes over the top makes the boat look like it it belongs in a Batman movie.
If brp/evinrude were smart they would develop a high rpm diesel outboard.
The worst part about it is there was more than one person that thought this was a good idea.

Would you guys consider doing an over, & Under series on fiberglass bass boats in the18 ft. Range with 150's? I've been looking at boats in this class, & talking to local dealers (I live in south east Louisiana). The best deals I'm finding are on the Skeeter ZX150. I'm trying to find the best deals on fiberglass bass boats which is why I'm looking at smaller boats. The only thing that I have to have is a tandem axle trailer. I plan on being on the interstate a lot and don't feal comfortable with a single axle.

The tandem axle is a great idea. I do the same.
When my son became a engineer I told him over and over again. DO NO WASTE YOUR TIME TRYING TO REINVENT THE WHEEL! I hate Evinrude used their customer's to find out their product issues !
all the cost and simplicity of an outboard with the ease of service of an inboard...
If anyone is a future outboard engineer. Try testing through rapids and hit some rocks. If it’s good then it will be good. I drive through rapids and there is few outboards that can handle the rocks.
I knew Evinrude engineer who did the Air-Bouy motor that's in Lawnboy.
My first look at it but looks like they essentially took an inboard, turned the outdrive around and moved it outside the boat, possibly with all the emissions junk that comes along with newer inboards.... Greeeat. Not exactly what they they said they were going to do when they stopped making etecs.
BRP design team logo: Higher Education Gone Wild! This makes no sense,but then again it goes with all the new designs. Your supposed to throw it away and not repair it. I'm glad I'm F__king old!
