The last great Rumanian team in women's gymnastics. An wonderful tradition from 1976 until 2004! Great names like Nadia Comabeci, Ecaterina Szabo, Simona Pauca, Daniela Silivas, Simona Amanar, Gina Gogean and Catalina Ponor. I miss the great Rumanian women's gymnastics teams.

It's because she usually did a full-twisting layout. That's her "safe" routine. 😁

@@Ian.D. There was one point where she was training a 1.5 twisting back tuck on beam. I would've done anything to witness that.

Romania was by far the best team in Athens. They were amazing to watch.

USA was the best team in Athens. Romania outperformed them however, and had a better team configuration than the United States, who by the time the Olympics came was dealing with injuries to both McCool (wrist) and Kupets (hip). If they had been 100%, USA would have easily won team gold. Romania took advantages of the US's mistakes to capitalize on gold but they were not the best team in Athens. Similarly, Romania was not the best team in Sydney (Russia was hands down) but they were consistent and capitalized on mistakes made by Russia. USA was technically not the best team in 1996. China and Romania before injuries were the best two teams in Atlanta but the US outperformed them. If we look back at the last 8 Olympics only USA in 2016, 2012 and CIS in 1992 were the best teams on paper and actually won gold.

USA was not the best team in 2004. Even at their best they had iffy and inconsistent start values on floor and beam, which was part of what cost them. The Romanians knew how to get their full start value.

@@jorgebonilla2234 Agreed, Bhardwaj's FX routine was only designed to have 9.9 SV and Kupets only 9.8, those are weak FX routines. Both then missed dance elements in the TF and got just 9.7 and 9.6 SV respectively. Bhardwaj's BB routine was only designed to have 9.8 SV but at least she hit. All of Romania's BB and FX routines were designed to have 10.0 SV.

All their dismounts were incredible. Two stuck double tucks, two triple twists, and a full twisting double tuck. We don’t see dismounts like these anymore.
Catalina is unquestionable the best of the entire world
I don't know much about scoring and the code, but these routines still look competitive today for me.
how much more complicated and interesting routines look than now
Incredibil ! 😂😍😍😍

Oana did 9 difficult jumps , most of them in combination : Dscore would have been around 8 in actual CP 22-24 !! And E : more than 9.5 !!! 😍😍😍
What a Beautiful routine of Silvia Stroescu in balance beam one of the best for sure. 💛
I love and live for this Team.
Incríveis romenas povo lindo..nota 1000 para todas

Oana Ban not qualifing for the Final is pure heartbreak....Romania was awesome on beam

This team was gold! Best team Romania’s ever had ❤
Ponor.. always the best on beam ❤️ but all they were just perfect 👌🏻
Catalina Ponor is her 2004 Olympic Champions in Athens from Romanian 🇷🇴 Artistic Gymnast.
Todas son impresionanten...me encanta verlas
Me encanta Catalina ponor❤
I really liked Silvia Stroescu's flight series on beam. I think it's worth .2 in bonus with the current COP (cv bonus and B+D bonus). Hopefully we'll see more combos like this. And Romania was unstoppable that night watching it back in 2004 as there was no point that I was nervous for them (maybe a couple on bars).

I think the LOSO into Onodi is worth 0.2 CV since it involves a change of direction. It's a valuable combination but difficult. She also gets 0.1 SB.
I didn't catch that one-handed pass by Ponor during her routine, amazing!
This was possibly the peak of Romanian Gymnastics - they won team gold and 3 of the individual events here. They proved how much consistency mattered under the 10.0 system. Unfortunately the future open-ended code did not favor them. Its sad to think they didnt even qualify a team in 2016 or 2020.

I think describing the post 2006 COP as "open ended" is kinda of a misnomer; although SV is no longer subject to a hard cap like under the 10 point system, how much SV you can have is still limited by what's possible and permissible under the COP. That that COP inevitably favours some gymnasts and countries over others. And, like you say, it just hasn't favoured Romania. The 2008 COP had sky high SVs on UB, Romania's worst event. Under the 10 point system you could fairly easily get 10.0 SV on UB so even weak Romanian routines at least go there and be competitive. Even in 2012 and 2016, UB scores were higher than in other events, Mustafina scored near or over 16.0 in both Olympics while even the best BB and FX routines could barely get over 15.5. After 2013, the G cap on tumbling was also removed and tumbling on FX started to reach H, I and J, which favoured the USA whose gymnasts tended to be more muscular and powerful tumblers (like Biles). But at least Romania remained competitive in 2008 and 2012. After that, their system started to crumble and standards dropped due to long term under investment whereas the USA has thrown money at gymnastics. Going forward, Romania doesn't look like it has the money to invest in gymnastics to recover their glory years and the country now has other priorities. But if members of this 2004 team competed today and were still physically at their peak, they'd definitely challenge for the medals. Just look at Ponor, she was highly competitive in 2012 and could have even won bronze in 2016 (if not for nervous errors).
Oana Ben OMG! Perfeita 👏🏾😻👏🏾😻

If Porgras would've stayed until London, in 2012 they could've had their best beam lineup. Imagine: Beam: Porgras, Ponor, Iordache Floor: Ponor, Izbașa, Iordache
I don’t get why they put Sofronie after Ponor in the line up 🤔
