    Around 2:00 you were saying “down level with...”, & Lola heard “down” & thought it was her command to go into down position.

    I volunteer at the zoo and they always have the fur and harbour seals target and do different behaviours, and I've been wanting to teach my dog (and cat) to target, I'm so so excited now that someone has explained it ☺️

    Hello I just watched this video for the first time. I like the way you train your dog. I'm new to clicker training and I love what the outcome could be. I just adopted a 7 month old Shepherd/Rottie mix. I've done the first stage of clicker training getting the dog familiar with the clicker. Now that I've started to use the clicker do I have to use it with every command throughout the day? Or just while I'm doing a clicker session? Any info you can give would be greatly appreciated. Your so good I had to sub. Looking forward to seeing more of your vids. Thanks for all your hard work!!!!

    Once they're 100% with a command, you don't have to reinforce it with the clicker/praise/treat, but if they start to slip, you'll want to hold off on using that command without reinforcement.

    When you think about how dogs work, our words mean nothing to them initially, they communicate through body language first before vocalizations. Your dog doesn't know what is expected of them so adding a voice command is just confusing because at the beginning the dog doesn't even know what you want from it yet. You want to wait until it understands what you expect before throwing a voice command into the mix. Once your dog is consistently doing the desired the behavior then it's appropriate to add the command with it. If you do it the other way your dog will actually learn that your voice doesn't have much meaning and will ignore you :)

    Oops. I taught shake and then bells because my shelter dog never learned how to ask to go outside and now she just rings them with her nose even though I asked her to ring the bells with her feet. I didn't know about targeting but I did know how to teach a dog to shake, so I used that.

    +Indoor Orchids and Tropicals: IKR? My MinPin has always been extremely frenzied around human food & had little to no interest in kibble. So I'm forced to train her with some type of human food which I cut really tiny because of calories. But NOT realising that the method of trying to teach them to leave it or remain calm around food was so similar to the method for shake, (as well as possibly a few other tricks), so I taught her that first, because it seemed the most urgent concerning her behaviour issues. Now getting her to give me her paw or touch anything with her paw is next to impossible because she thinks she's supposed to not show interest. Apparently she learned THAT one really well...Now I want to teach her all this other stuff, & don't know how to overcome this obstacle. It's not her fault, it's mine. I didn't realise at the time, that she would need to learn particular things in a certain order, in order to not be "shooting myself in the foot", concerning further training... I'm really proud of HER! But I feel like I kind of failed her...

    @@johndudlicek9750 hang the bells next to the door, take your dog to the door, get them to touch the bells, then open door and take dog outside. Repeat process until dog understands. You can also put a toy or treat outside the door, make sure the dog knows it's there, then close door, and get dog to touch Bells before you open the door. Repeat process many times. In this last scenario, the reward is the toy or treat on the other side of the door.

    How do you teach a dog to hand target without sneezing and getting mucus and slobber all over your hand. Mine thinks if he throws his whole mouth into is, then that means I can't refuse him a treat. Or he'll pound his nose into my hand making himself sneeze over and over again. But if I tell him no, then he just wont do a hand targeting at all.

  • @MaceSterling

    @MaceSterling

    You could try tiring him out physically before attempting a training session. I have a similar issue sometimes when getting my puppy to perform a hand target, and it usually happens when he hasn't really had any exercise beforehand. You could also try adding some mild distractions, or maybe changing your reward to something he likes but which isn't quite as exciting for him and see if that calms him down any (I had to do this when training my cats because they'd get too excited about the food reward to perform properly). You can also refuse to treat him until he does the touch the way you want him too-- start off slow though because you still need him to touch your hand, you just want to wean him off his current behavior and show him what is more acceptable. You could also have him perform any tricks he already knows to stop him from getting too bored or frustrated to perform, or put him in a down and have him touch from there, since dogs are usually calmer when laying down. Worst case, you can just wear gloves when training.

    When I went to obedience training they taught us to use a sharp, emphatic "yes" because that way you always have your reinforcement with you, your voice, versus the clicker. But I've seen people incapable of a consistent "yes". The click is short, direct feedback, so the yes needs to be similar, and not like you'd normally talk or praise your dog.

  • @Nea-van-R.

    The click is NOT a reward! The click marks the exact Moment the dog was right, and tells the dog what you did when you heard the click was correct, come get your reward. You can also use 'yes' (or whatever short Word you like 'tik'/'top'/..).

    +Katrina Wright I like to change it up. Many times I use her kibble that is measured out daily. That way I can ensure she isn't eating too much and potentially gaining unneeded weight. When I'm starting a new "trick" or behavior I like to give her something special. I use a variety of treats including Plato Small Bites, K9 Granola treats, other types of kibble, Etta Says treats, etc. Variety is always good!

    You can teach your dog to bring you a little bag where your medicin is in. But you can not teach them that It's time to take it. How should the dog know how late it is? Dogs can learn to alert their humans when their blood shugar Level is to low so the human can then take his medicin. But a dog can not learn 'oh, It's 9.30am. My human needs his medication.' Set a timer on your Phone so you don't forget.
