TEACHING STUBBORN DOGS HOW TO THINK

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In this video, we'll quickly examine the application of firmness with "stubborn" dogs and see if that is as much an issue as people tend to make it out to be. We'll also examine critical thinking and how we get our dogs into the mindset of solving problems.

@@ericandcaprithepup I agree that the robe does give you a certain confidence while training for some weird reason!😂 and believe it or not, my dogs respond differently when I have my robe on 😂😂. It might be because first thing in the morning, which is the most common time for me to have my robe on, I’m at my calmest but also my firmest because I’m just waking up lol 🤦🏽‍♂️ who knows

100% positive only force free people are delusional and sanctimonious. “This is the only way. Anything. Else is inhumane”. Yea you might get away with that on your border collie. Do that with a dog that wants to take people or other dogs head off. Or better yet. Drop you leash and ditch the cookies or the ball. Will they still do it? Let’s see how willing they are to drop their leash in public with no treats or toys to lure with. It’s insane. They’ll never ever get anywhere just using treats and toys witha doglike a pit, or bully or corso or mali or or or.

Positive reinforcement doesn't work if it's not cohesive with what the owners are doing... It involves planning and preparation, it's not reactive. But you're in a setting which is largely reactive. So it's not the positive training that's wrong, it's that that's not how it works

Recently found your channel and can’t say enough good about it! Keep up the good work. Those who don’t understand the firmness that it takes to lead dogs of certain breeds are the ones who should never own those breeds. And it sure is easy to spot them when they’re walking their dogs - or rather, their dogs are walking them - and their dogs are reacting at every dog that passes by.

I think that it is respectful to pay them for their time to be fair, no one is obligated to share their hard earned knowledge for free. With that said, there are ways you can be helpful to people in the quest for knowledge. If you reached out to me and offered to help with my boarded dogs, etc, that would for example be a mutually beneficial situation. People can be willing, it just depends on your approach, your intention, etc ❤️

I really needed this…my grandma died last year and we had to take her golden retriever/Samoyed in our care and wow this dog was not listening to us at all. He’s way better now but he has a huge problem with other dogs, he will jump on the leash and start barking. I’m trying to make him sit and he does but he would always sit so he can still see the dog and he never looks at me… I get so sad cause I just ask myself why doesn’t he notice me in these moments? Or maybe doesn’t want to notice me…it’s embarrassing, I try to get out of the way of other owners and their dogs and I’m also sad for my dog because I think he wants to meet dogs, but the jumping on the leash and his barking indicates to me that he’s aggressive…but tbh I cannot really tell because at this point I’m a little stumped. 3 days ago he pulled on the leash so hard, my mother couldn’t hold him anymore and let go, he ran across the river to another dog and he started biting and fighting with him…I didn’t even know what to say because my grandma put him in dog school until he was 5 (he’s 10 now)so he knows other dogs!… I just don’t know where this hatred for other dogs suddenly comes from… he has also lived with two other dogs when my grandma was still alive, and I remember he was never angry, he is not an angry dog at all, actually quiet the opposite … maybe with the tips in the video I will get there… maybe somebody can tell me what it might can be that he is acting like that with other dogs? Or should I just find a trainer asap?

From what you’ve said ref his history of great interactions with other doggos, I’d say what your dealing with is OTT Excitement, NOT aggression. Yes, it definitely becomes a problem when that OTT excited mindset develops into Frustration, thereby almost guaranteed to provoke a dog fight as the other dog is being Rushed at and thinks it has to Defend itself. Ok. So what can you do here? Few suggestions for you :-) 1st. Start teaching Calmness Everyday. How you do that is by teaching ‘Wait’ - ie before feeding, put him in a Sit, tell him to Wait, place the food on the ground BUT he Only is allowed to start eating when he is Calm, ears relaxed/back, body Relaxed. He must Look into your eyes before you give him the ‘Ok’, only Then do you allow him to eat 😊 The 1st time you start this exercise, it might take a few minutes, time will get shorter and shorter as he practices 👍 From there, you incorporate that calmness into everyday activities - ie. tell him to Wait before coming inside the house. Again you wait until he looks you in the eyes, has to be Calm and Relaxed, only Then you Invite him in.. 2nd. Exercise. You’ll never have any problem if your pupper is Tired. If you have a decent backyard, try playing Ball for 15 mins Before you take him out for a walk..get him into ‘listening mode’ by telling him to Wait when you throw the ball, then lotsa pats when he retrieves it.. before you Leave your place, again make sure he is Calm, Wait and walking beside you.. if he rushes out the door bring him back in and try again until he Gets It Right.. making him Think also tires him out so win win lol.. Another option- if you know a well trained older dog in your neighbourhood, you could invite them for a ‘doggy play-date’ - dogs are the Best at tiring each other out 😊 Obviously, how you introduce them is very important, esp atm.. you’ll Never have an issue with Calm doggos meeting. So, ask your friend to bring the well-trained pupper up to to fence and Sit with their back to the fence. You stand with your doggo on your side of fence. If/when your pup barks/shows OTT excitement, grab the pup’s collar, put him in a Sit, Wait until he Looks you in the Eye, then you Release him to Try Again.. Aim here is to Disagree with the Excitement but Agree with the Meeting YOU need to be Calm and Confident, keep minimum/quiet talking at least until doggos have sniffed and relaxed.. then take them out for a walk Together. Your pup needs to either be walking Beside or Behind basically so he can Learn from the wiser doggo 😅 Everything you do with your doggo builds on being Invited, rather than Invaded.. hope that makes sense Ok! There’s a few ideas for you but as someone who literally just when thru the same Challenge (my most recent adopted doggo being a 5 year old 50kg’s Great Dane x Mastiff with OTT excitement, yep I definitely can relate lol), complete understand the ‘embarrassment’ these outbursts cause! Jeez.. 😂 But. ALL doggos Change and grow IF you teach Calmness and Be Consistent Ok, leave you to it.. but if you need more ideas, well, as you can see, I can talk doggos until the cows come home! Hilarious but yeah, love ‘em ❤️😊 Best of luck with your boi, he really does sound lovely Cheers

@@its_Today_what a lovely and thoughtful reply! Chock full of great info. I have a rescue - was told lab/great Dane cross but he was so prey driven and reactive I had him dna tested as none of the training I had formerly used on highly biddable dogs was working. Turns out he’s GSD/boxer/pit mix so I am catering to his drives by playing nose games and making him work for *everything*. So much of what you have suggested here is what I did with him and it has worked a treat. Being calm confident - and willing that mindset if I have to (and I do have to!!) is a big help. That and consistency, no matter if it’s raining, or I’m tired.

When I got my first dog, I had seriously bad timing, I was sick and he was only a few weeks old, so I couldn't give him the proper attention, and I was struggling mentally not soon after I got better from being sick, our relationship is only just now getting better. My dogs leash broke, (quite literally) and he got out when a neighbor was walking her dog, how she didn't see me trying to get him is beyond me, but when he got out he didn't run to her right away, instead ran around the yard, then went to investigate, mind you her dog wasn't what you could call friendly, when he got to her he started running around her and the dog, they didn't get into any form of real fighting, besides some mouthing, but the woman started screaming, absolutely freaking out, when I got to him he went with me pretty easily, and didn't cause anymore problems, but she was still screaming, I understand her being afraid, but she could've handled the situation better, screaming "That's why they have kennels" and "I'm gonna have your dog put down" is a bit wild when her dog got out multiple times and was barking, chasing, and Growling at our dogs through their kennels, ngl I now have some ptsd from it, and don't even want to walk my dog anymore, for a ridiculous fear that the new leash will break. I've always believed in humans being dominant over dogs and being pack leader, mostly because the videos I watched of "Your dog is your best friend" just didn't work, but I never really realized that you could do a bit of both, I wish I had found your videos sooner, perhaps me and my boy could've been better off, but now we can start over ty❤

Hey Eric. I live in Vegas. We have had a German shepherd/boxer since he was a puppy. He was always good around other dogs up until he was about 1. Now we cannot have him around other dogs at all. He immediately tries to attack them. He’s also that way with new people coming into the home. Not so much attack, but extremely nervous and at times has tried to nip. And as odd as it sounds , he hates going outside. He just runs back and forth by the door. This dog we have had. He’s never been mistreated. I hate not being able to take him places or to dog parks. Any advice ?

100% German shepherd are “easier” but pitties bullies and all the big headed dogs just have something to them that I love. Personally working line GSDs, Pitbulls (my personal dog) and Dobermans are my favorite. But the big headed dogs while usually more difficult bring a completely different energy. Super super intense where shepherds may be aroused and high drive. The big headed molloser/bulldog/terrier mix/mastiff mix type dogs with big heads and floppy ears just bring something different to the table than the pointy eared dogs. Kinda why GSDs pitties and dobbies are my top 3 breeds. Medium to large in size. Not HUGE or tiny. Athletic, smart, driven and have similar but also very different personalities. The Shepards are like teachers pet, the dobbies are like the ADHD kid that’s actually ridiculously smart but behaves like shit in class cause they’re beyond board because the school isn’t giving them a challenge and pitties are like the super intense athletic kid that gets super fired up and likes to get a little out of control at times. Absolutely love them for their different qualities and personalities 😊

I posted this on a previous video but! Hey Eric, I have a MalX, and I had him in a 16 week advanced obedience course which I was there for every class. He just completed it a couple of weeks ago. The trainer recommended an e collar(week 12) and a prong collar around week 4. I have a lot of respect for the trainer and he handles a lot of dogs with love and care. Most dogs I saw during classes did not have e collars nor prongs. My dog is amazing when I use them. I am not a professional (though I plan to go to dog trainer school may 6th at starmark academy). Is this an 'ok' method of training in your eyes. I love your way of training and you taught me how to kennel train my dog with your videos when I got him last year. (the video of you throwing treats with calm music to teach the dog how to open the crate by itself). Any advice and your own thoughts on it are accepted. I don't get offended you won't hurt my feelings. Just thought I would ask, l've been watching you for a long time.

It’s up to you as your dog’s handler to decide whether you find an e-collar/prong as acceptable tools for training. Remember they are tools to be used for training. What are your goals for your dog? If you think about it that way you’ll find out if the collars are necessary for what you want to do.

  • @thomasmarchese2808

    @thomasmarchese2808

Dogs think in A+B=C. They don’t think like we do. Classical conditioning. Beep followed by food results in a dog that gets exited at the beep cause they know food is coming. That’s why markers like good yes and no are used. Good is taught you’re doing the right think. Stay in place and I will bring you a reward. Yes is taught you’ve completed the task. Come get your reward or go to your reward (fetching a ball for example) free is taught ok go be a dog, sniff pee chase squirrels. No is taught that a physical correction follows. So you get to the point where the no alone will make the dog change behavior. They jump on the counter “no!” Dog jumps down to avoid the correction. It’s anticipated. That literally it brother. I recommend looking into classical and operant conditioning. You also asked about high value rewards. I’ll put it this way. If I give you 5$ to stop at a stop sign. But there’s no punishment if you run it. You’ll stop for you 5. Until one day you say fuck that 5 I’m late. And run it. No punishment. Just no reward. Which is technically a punishment. It’s the negative punishment of operant conditioning. A leash pop would be positive punishment (not good or bad. But adding or subtracting. Taking away the reward or adding a correction) anyway. Now you need 10$ to stop cause the 5 just ain’t worth stopping. You’d rather run them all and get what you want. To get where you’re going faster. Eventually it becomes 50. 100 and so on. But if I say you might get a reward for stopping. Maybe not. But you might. Because it happens randomly but if you don’t you get a ticket. Now we have a balanced and clear understanding of the world. But it’s not arbitrarily imposing our will. It’s saftey and responsibility. It’s how dogs have freedom. This is why force free or positive only is a complete joke and is diluted nonses. They withhold the reward and immediately break their own phrases “force free. Positive only. No stress”. A dog that wants the reward but makes a mistake or does a good thing but not what you asked so it gets no reward is going to be stressed and pressured. Just like an athlete. Again. That’s why the FF/PO training is completely trash as a whole. You can learn incredibly useful positive reinforcement techniques. But they won’t through their leash down and walk away from their dog in a busy public place. While also not baiting the dog with a reward every time its whole life. Their idea of a trained dogs is bring treats or a toy everywhere. It’s nonses.

I think the audio in your video is just on the left channel. If you mic is recording in mono, there is a way to copy to the other one

If you say "hey guys stop playing you're so cute guys stop" then no, that's not going to work. But training excellent commands in a nondistracting environment first before building up to the exercise you're doing now, would work. You used a pretend lunge and stamp at the dog when you said "hey!" to get him to stop playing with Capri. That would be unnecessary if he listened to you already. This is really messy. The dog also doesn't know that body language was pretend, you used physical intimidation to get him to listen. Afterwards he acts quite submissive and nervous rather than just obedient. Positive reinforcers don't say other forms of training don't work, they say they're not necessary and have some negative consequences. If you act physically intimidating to many dogs you can start to create a more fearful reactive dog. Firm commands are different to the physical intimidation youre using. Getting his attention is also different to the way you lurched towards him. You intentionally communicated you might hit him and he acted scared and tried to placate you with submissive body language. Firm commands aren't a problem but the heavy handedness is just lazy. Impulsive dogs don't "need" this kind of training. I would correct that to say this kind of training is one thing that works with them. Other things that also work are more dedicated training/time - because don't buy a hard to train breed and then be upset when they need more time to learn things, buy a border collie instead. Or they can also benefit from higher value rewards. They benefit from the right environment eg enough outdoor time, calming their nervous system either through exercise or physical contact when they are in a new situation. Because a lot of their inpulsivity comes from anxiety. Lots of things work, including this, this is just the way that's laziest for the human.
