I gave a chess lesson to @Myth_YT, a participant of the chess.com PogChamps 3. Hikaru gave a lesson to Pokimane recently and Myth is also participating. Myth is also signed to TSM like Hikaru. We covered beginner opening concepts and did a lesson on tactics and the thought process.

I think there is definitely an advantage for someone naturally skilled at chess (just like for anyone naturally skilled at singing/sports/anything) but if we practice enough, we can at least compete with then and even surpass them if they don’t keep improving and we do ☺️

@@uditdhanda4693 intelligence is subjective. Guess this would be called critical thinking v memorization.
@frostypakki836
3 жыл бұрын
@@uditdhanda4693 Intelligence is not what makes a good chess player. It's simply how good they are at playing chess. One could teach the smartest person in the world that has not played chess basic rules and they would still lose to a 1000 rated player. Likewise, one could take a high school dropout and hone their chess abilities and allow them to play at a master level. Perhaps this hypothetical student merely trudged through school without trying, but the point is that even if one learned a skill (chess) and was good at it, doesnt mean it requires intelligence. By practicing a skill, you hone your ability to apply yourself to that particular skill. Let's use your own logic in your example about basketball. The ability to derive strategic positions to gain an advantage is also used in basketball through screens, cuts, and general formation. Not only these, the ability to fake out your opponent with weight shifts and feints also have to be taken into account. By your definition, basketball is also skill capped by intelligence. Furthermore, by your definition, even a game as simple as Connect 4 requires intelligent, as there is an existent strategy and often times a best move. While these do require thinking in their own rights, I prefer acknowledging them as their own respective skills and not "intelligence".

So far ive only seen poki and myth's lessons, but it honestly make me really happy to see how well theyre responding to lessons and how into it they seem. Im super excited for pogchamps 3
Four hundred thousand subscribers Levy. Congrats man. You're an amazing coach and a brilliant commentator.
I'm genuinely impressed by how well you explained your lesson. It felt great watching because this is exactly how I would want something new explained to me. Great job!
Levy:"Chess has nothing to do with intelligence" Me:"I know. I lost to Leela with 1 node lookahead"
Showing him the Wayward Queen attack was veryyy important! Learned that the hard way! lol
I watched almost an entire hour of a lesson, and it was so good! Levi you might be the only legitimate challenge to my number one watched KZread NL
What I really love about Levy's way of teaching/videos with beginners is that even though I'm a bit experienced, but mostly a casual player, I still can pick up and learn something from this and it's not just another video for people who are relatively new to the game

What a great coach, perfectly asking the right questions at the level a student can solve them.
That was a nice lesson. (Great teaching style)
Saw this on stream, but just wanted to say that the video title is perfect. Props to whoever came up with it!
I used to watch myth all the time , he’s actually a fkn smart cookie this is sick to watch
This was a fantastic first chess lesson. A great mix of demonstrating fundamental chess principles and asking the student questions/to make their own moves to get them involved and see/adjust their thought process, while also creating situations to introduce key concepts but still keeping the lesson focused and not overwhelming them with too much info. All while being encouraging, upbeat, and funny. The other Pogchamps coaches with less teaching experience could def learn from this. Also Myth helped by being such a good student.
Bro is really out here making moves.
Fascinating to watch a beginners level lesson, I was impressed when he realised that the h-file is a bad place for a knight due to limited movement options. I also didn't realise PC3 was a thing already! There's a black hole of my time on the horizon!
Let's go you reached 400k!
At this quick of a pace, levy will probabbly teaches myth the fried liver and even traxler counterattack.

Hey Levy, I enjoy your videos very much ever since the algorithm brought them to my attention. I'm also following you on twitch and I appreciate the content. A small suggestion I would give is to make an ending to these videos. I would love to hear your post analysis and another summary at what were the most useful concepts, or just a close up saying bye would be great for me. Hope to keep watching great content. Thanks for posting these!

woahh congrats on 400k levy wasn't the race to 200k vs Rosen just yesterday? 😂
Thanks for posting this. It was very helpful.
Dude how many times is that title changing? The lesson was awesome though. Happy I could watch live.
new to competitive level chess. This is a s very informative video for a 700. Thank you
45:54 I think myth was mostly seeing he could push up the f pawn, eventually threaten the bishop and then _maybe_ that would lead to an opening for his rook somehow along the f file. I'm not sure he necessarily saw a way to get any of his rooks to g6. Still a VERY nice move for someone's very first lesson. Even having the intuition to see that you can activate the rook without moving it is impressive.
Anyone know how they're both highlighting and showing the moves to each other? I'm trying to do it with a friend and we can't find a way.
Idk why but after myth moved pawn to e5 I immediately thought bishop to b5 check and then I realized there’s 0 protection
I love how Levy explains stuff for the most part, but (and this goes for every chess teacher ever, not just Levy) why even say to beginners that kings are not allowed to put themselves in check? Or that a pinned pawn isn't allowed to move because it would put the king in check? Just say "if I do this, my king gets caught on the next move" even if that's not literally what the rules say. As long as it doesn't change the decision making process, it's better to have fewer rules to think about. Freeing up some mental space for your student matters both in the short term (because there's a lot of rules to think about in the beginning) and actually also in the longer term, because they're not building an unnecessarily cluttered mental structure. Future knowledge builds on existing knowledge, and if they have an unnecessarily cluttered understanding of how the pieces move, this adds some "weight" whenever they try to construct new knowledge building on that knowledge. For example, I'll guarantee you they'll be a little bit quicker to learn mating patterns if you drop the "allowed" rules. The worst thing that can happen is that they try to make a move that would put their king in check, get confused when the board won't let them, and then realize that oh, hold on, I would lose on the next move if I did that, I don't want to do it anyway.
Myth seems like a nice guy. I hope he works hard, practices, and does well in the event!
