Her first few sentences is incorrect about Michigan teachers. This article says a University of Michigan study "found that Michigan students were at the bottom of the list when it comes to proficiency growth in the four measures of the exam." (www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/michigan/2017/02/20/michigan-test-score-gains-worst-nation/98144368/) So yes, Michigan teachers know how to teach all types of children, but maybe there are better techniques they could learn to improve their students results. Teaching is not easy, especially with the kids nowadays. And many teachers definitely put their heart and soul in teaching. But the current system is not working. Or at least something is not working. Someone or a group needs to figure out which factors can be improved to improve the US education system. Davos' method may not be good, but she shouldn't debunk a "myth" with false or misleading claims.

Des Troya - Public schools aren't equivalent to a business, they don't produce goods now to make a profit now - they produce educated people to make a difference in 20 years, and it's not something you can stick a number on. They're an investment in the future. Further, you can't just let them fail because then you're failing the children they're supposed to be educating and failing the future of your country - and, sadly, the UK education system is heading the same way.

The one thing I notice about this interview with Ms. Hollingsworth was that she did not stutter once about the queestions that she was responding to as opposed to Mrs. Devos' interview who seems to not be very informed about her job or subject matter. Public schools should receive ALL public education funding, period. The notion that choice solves problems in public ed has been debunked over and over again. Here in Ohio, ECOT, our biggest charter school company is involved in a lawsuit concerning the pull back of state funding, due to corruption that was uncovered. Funding charter schools is not a solution, it simply exacerbates the problem, ensuring that public schools will continue to suffer. In my opinion, the solution is 2 fold. First, public schools must be adequately funded. Secondly, public schools must make some major changes including, but not limited to the list below. These changes will cost money, which can be covered by ceasing to fund all non-public schools with public dollars. Yes, some teachers will resist major reforms, but they can find another job. We can no longer afford to short change our public school students. That means properly funding their schools and ensuring that every single classroom has a gifted teacher who has all the tools necessary to achieve positive results... increase teacher pay, particularly in the most challenging districts, to attract the best teachers to those areas strengthen teacher standards and promptly remove teachers that aren't serving students well hire more teachers and counselors shorten summer break to allow for continuous learning and knowledge retention expand after school programs particularly in poor communities partner schools with public universities/trade schools to encourage higher learning create a system where the best practices and knowledge about teaching can be easily shared limit competency testing to once per year so teachers can focus more on their curriculum

+Jennifer I absolutely disagree. There are too many poor families in this country that don't have any other choice but public schools, that's where the DoE's efforts and funding should always be focused. If it is so important to you to pull your child out of public school, then prove it by financing that alternative education yourself. It's not any other tax payers responsibility to educate your child anywhere but a public school, especially since our public schools are suffering profoundly at the loss of those funds. We all need to realize that we're in this together and if all (or most) of our kids went to public schools, they'd be getting the funding and reforms that they need, instead of being demonized and left behind.

Also if she does teach history there is nothing wrong with her talking about slavery, it is important for the young to hear about the past also slavery ended just over 152yrs ago in the USA. Right now there are an estimated higher number of illegal slaves in the USA than there ever where when it was legal to own other human beings.

When charter schools were first introduced in MI, the governor the time limited the amount of charter schools made a point of saying that charter schools could not take away from public education. I live in Holland, MI where Ms. DeVos is from (she literally lives less than 5 min away from my house), her advocacy of school of choice over the last 20 years has destroyed the Holland Public School system. In and around Holland there are 3 other public school systems, 3 charter schools (I believe), and one Christian school system. 70% of the white children in Holland go to the other public schools. They have already had to close down 5 elementary schools in Holland and next year they are talking about closing another building. They are even talking about closing a charter school and filling the class sizes to 30 students a class which, I thought, defeated the purpose of a charter school.

Emma Howland-Bolton, Public Schools ALSO know how to educate ACADEMICALLY GIFTED & ADVANCED STUDENTS too! I have a daughter who fought thru ADD w/medication at first then behavioral modifications after her ADD was handled until she learned how to control her problems primarily with the behavioral modifications designed by one of the top ADD/ADHD/Learning Disability Psychologists in the country. My other daughter was academically advanced & 2-3 grade levels ahead of her classmates from kindergarten thru senior year & has gone on to college just like our other daughter. Many public schools are doing well but, like you say, they need continued & better funding & stop taking funds away to fund DeVos' scam.

No teacher can speak honestly not within the framework of the "social justice warriors" or neo marxist race baiting mob that has no interest in being a post racial country which is what the USA has been since Armstrong landed on the Moon. The narrative of race and racism goes on because it is a ready excuse for low performing students with one except: Asian immigrants manage to educate their children despite the poor schools on every illiberal mission, focus again on: reading, writing, and arithmetic. Work and study like Asian Americans and move on UP like Asian Americans, enough of the false narratives and excuses for low standards and stop the resentment driven propaganda on the part of some educators. We live in a high-tech nation and need bright, educated workers to maintain our place in the world economy. One way to get those workers is to import adult workers who were educated somewhere else. But wait, a lot of folks are against immigration. Another way to get those workers is to educate foreign children. But wait, we don't want immigrant children in our schools! A third way is to educate our OWN children. Those are the only three choices I can think of. We can choose one or more of them, or we can gradually sink to second-world status.

We should be throwing money towards education. Maybe public school could focus on teaching children, instead of constantly fundraising by selling chocolate bars, cookie dough, and many other things every 3 weeks. Fund the school , and make sure that money goes to educate , without all the back room , good buddy deals that I call embezzlement/fraud. Cost a million dollars to build a storm shelter for 1 school here? Someone put 2/3 in their pockets.

WHAT'S SO WRONG ABOUT PRIVATE & CHARTER SCHOOLS, VOUCHERS, AND SCHOOL CHOICE? WORKS GREAT IN SWEEDEN! In Sweden, they once had a government controlled monopoly on schools for kids. They costed too much, performed too little. So, they ended that monopoly. They enabled charter and private schools to be founded, they offered parents vouchers to send their kids to those schools. They also allowed more parental choice in which public schools parents had their kids go to. The result? The cost of public schooling plumitted, as more kids got better educations at private and charter schools, the public schools were forced to improve their teaching in order to compete and retain students. Better schools, smarter kids, lower cost to taxpayers. So, what is so wrong with Betsy DeVoss?
