FNN: Betsy DeVos BOOED as She Speaks at Bethune-Cookman University Commencement (FULL SPEECH)

Brought to you by Desert Diamond: ddcaz.com
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Many of the graduating students turned their backs on Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and boos nearly drowned out her commencement speech Wednesday at Bethune-Cookman University.
DeVos carried on with her keynote address to the historically black university, praising its founder Mary McLeod Bethune as someone who "refused to accept systemic and repulsive racism," and had "the courage to change old ideas."
"Let's choose to hear one another out," DeVos said, reading her prepared text in a measured tone despite continuing waves of boos, catcalls and scattered applause.
"I am here to demonstrate in the most direct way possible that I and the administration are fully committed to your success and to the success of every student across this great country," she said.
As the crowd kept trying to shout her down, university president Edison Jackson briefly took over the microphone to lecture the students before she continued.
"If this behavior continues, your degrees will be mailed to you. Choose which way you want to go," Jackson warned.
DeVos, a Republican fundraiser without classroom experience, offended many African-Americans in February when she said historically black colleges are the "real pioneers when it comes to school choice." After a storm of criticism, she acknowledged that these colleges were "born, not out of mere choice, but out of necessity, in the face of racism."
DeVos has continued since then to cite historically black colleges as alternative options for quality education, her stated goal for promoting the diversion of tax money to private and charter schools.
Some alumni and African-American leaders had called the invitation insensitive and misguided. Students gathered petitions demanding she not be allowed to speak. Before the address, activists lined a sidewalk. One sign said "DeVos is not worthy."
Jackson had been accused of selling out the school by inviting DeVos.
Before she left, he gave her a hug, then took back the podium to comment on the spectacle.
"As we have said repeatedly, be careful of the people you let in your place," Jackson said, acknowledging the criticism. But he said "Bethune-Cookman University can't do it alone. We need everyone to be a part of this continuation of our institution."

I agree, good for the students. The choice between having her speak at the ceremony or ending the ceremony, was not a choice that the students should have had to make. The school president had no business inviting that woman to destroy their graduation ceremony. She should have left in order for the ceremony to continue. But that would have required decency on her part, a quality severely and sadly lacking.

The booing was disrespectful to say the least. It has nothing to do with being white or privileged. Booing doesn't accomplish anything. Protesters on the street aren't accomplishing anything. Those students aren't victims, and we know that. If you want to accomplish something in life, you have to work for it. I can tell you something right now; if I got a job application sent to me with the name of that school on it I would immediately throw it away after seeing their behavior, they act like they are still second grade girls. It was very immature, pathetic, and gave the school a bad name.

In Argentina (I think) people decided to make politician's lives miserable, booing and heckling them whenever and wherever they went, until they began doing the bidding of the people. This is a form of democracy.

  • @AnakinDramaticSkywalker

Intelligence is subjectively measured based on the topic of discussion. If the topic is public education then it would be wise to assume that those who were in the system know far more than one who has yet to experience the public education system. As for why they were booing, I am sure they had their own reasons. Not everyone who goes to college is a byproduct of a professor's plot to gain ideological followers. Listening is by far the more peaceful route and hats off to those who did, but for some in the present audience it might be rather galling to hear a commencement speech from someone they view as less capable or of less merit than themselves. As for "the booing idiots who don't have the slightest degree of intelligence", it's a rather unfair remark considering they are graduating from a college, thereby proving to be capable of attaining at least one degree to mark their intelligence.

"Deplorable" is the behavoir of some of the Bethune-Cookman graduates. Were I the dean, their diplomas would have been held until a written apology was received by their graduation speaker. The poor behavior of those who are 'intolerant' is right on a par of the slave traders and the worst of prejudice haters. If they did not 'like' the speaker they should have just stayed home instead of ruining the graduation for the parents and other respectful graduates.

That old fella with all the bling, it was shameful for him to threaten to ruin the day for all of those graduates, in favor of one painfully underqualified lady who holds a job that is paid for by their tax dollars, and they pay that old man's salary too. What on Earth did that school think would happen, and why is she even there to give the commencement address? The day should be a celebration for the graduates, I'm certain they wanted almost anyone else to be up there talking. The only university I could think of, where she wouldn't be booed, is maybe Liberty University, which seems like it would be a weird and scary place anyhow..

They were not just disrespecting DeVos, they were disrespecting their faculty and their school of education. Rightly so. The most cushy job on the planet is being a college professor - no work for great pay and no risk of getting fired or having to answer to a boss. Respect is no longer part of the job description either. No wonder there are mostly liberals on college campuses. All they have to do is open their big mouths and let their teaching assistants do all the work. Sounds like the students are right on track. Betsy DeVos has true grit and guts. I can't believe she didn't walk out on a bunch of spoiled brats who don't look like they got any kind of education whatever. They should make great college professors.

Love is the greatest power in the world. It has the ability to change men's hearts. So the next time someone hates you - love them back. Point them to Christ with your words and deeds. It is their only hope.

It is very concerning when the culture begins to believe the idea that civil free speech should not be respected. Let us hear one another. Listen. And when we find points on which we disagree let us respectfully state our case. And allow the merit of our positions to fight for us. When we shout down our opponents or block their speech we testify that our arguments have fallen short. So rise up with your voice with respect. Win the hearts of your opponents with the strength of your position and the grace by which it was offered.
