DISCLAIMER
This is not a paid for advertisement or sponsorship. I buy 99% of all products I am showing. If anything was sent to me in PR or is affiliated, I will denote it with *. Links are not affiliate links, but just links to my personal pages linked to my blog or youtube channel, unless otherwise stated. I film my videos mainly using natural lighting as artificial studio lighting greatly alters the look/ performance of products and acts very similary to a filter. Besides, I don't live my life under studio lighting, so I need my makeup to look good in natural lighting mostly for my day to day life, which I why I prefer to test out products in the type of lighting I see my makeup in most.

I agree that without PR is hard because weekly are hundreds of products released and who has money for this let's be real ! But i've also seen big youtubers who never do PR videos and go Shopping very often and others that stopped receiving much PR and are doing just fine!

Very true, but don't forget that that switch usually happens after they start making enough money to do the shopping in the first place. If you want to be the first to review a product you need to get PR that is sent out before people can buy it.

@@FloatinginDreams absolutely, that's why if someone wants to grow faster at first, is way better if you receive PR! I also heard that usually when you have 10K subs they start sending PR but i have some people who are over 10K and still they don't receive much, or probably you have to reach out to brands to send you something at beginning!

I don't mind an occasional sponsorship every once in a while. Just not every other video. And I do notice if a sponsorship is 'out of the blue' or the creator has talked about that brand in a non sponsored video before or after. Or the creators who never have a harsh word to say about any product. Not everything can work for one person, some things just aren't made for you. I mostly get irritated by creators that seem so out of touch to think most people can use 150 euro products all day every day... I'm sure Tatcha is a great brand, but it's not a brand most housewifes or even normal working people get to afford every 2 months.

  • @FloatinginDreams

For sure! But if you have so much product coming in that you never have to repurchase anything the cost of having to stock up your cupboards is not something that occurs to some of them.

@@FloatinginDreams So true. I once bought a La Prairie daycream. It was the month before my wedding, it was so lovely and it made my skin look so good. But when it was gone, it was gone. And at that time I was an independent therapist that worked a 70 hour workweek, without admin. So it wasn't that I was lacking money. But 180 euro's (in 2009!!!) was just too much to fork out every 2 months!

First of all, love the hair! Secondly: I know when I see one big name influencer review a new palette I will see 100 suggested vids for that palette from other big name influencers . I think you've said before that negative reviews tend to get more views... I'm one of those people that likes seeing negative reviews because I know that much beloved brands can't always have products that are great for everyone.

That is another aspect indeed that I didn't even go into in the video. If the focus is always on being positive who can you know what you like? You can't love everything you try.

I appreciate that sponsorships pay the bills where KZread is a creator's only source of income. I am subscribed to a woman called Loepsie and she does a lot of sponsorships with Skillshare, which I don't mind, as she's obviously selling a product for them but it doesn't skew my trust in her because she isn't a beauty KZreadr as such. Whereas there are other creators I've unsubscribed from because they are doing sponsorships that relate more to their content. I hope that makes sense. I suppose what I'm trying to say is for me it entirely depends on the creator and how they handle the PR/sponsorship!

  • @helenskibinski9742

I think some creators who receive a lot of PR lose touch with the reality of the cost of the items they review. They may give it a favorable review and actually like the item, however, if it were their hard earned cash, would they be willing to spend $65 on that blush or $120 on another eyeshadow palette?

Love your haircut Maaike! I mostly see a skew when creators go from hobby creators to social media being their only source of income. If the change bothers me, I just don t watch them anymore. I need to be able to relate to the creator in order to like the content. An no, a room full of PR doesn't do it for me, nor new favourites after each unboxing that I won't see till the next declutter. I'd rather watch a proper review like you provide a bit later, than one 5 minutes after a product is available.

There are several beauty creators/ influencers that have caused broken trust in viewers like Mikayla and James Charles for a couple but lesser known creators have an impact on how viewers see them... it's sad when you see their rude side. It changes how you look at someone or something you want to like.

Hi Maaike I don’t watch any of the big youtubers for this reason. I’m much more interested in how relatively normal 😂people like a product. I don’t really have an issue with sponsorships that are clearly labelled as such but often skip through that section eg jewellery in a makeup video (no I am not interested in replica stones or gold plated silver- I like silver with an unusual design or more ethnic pieces for myself). I also am a bit “oh dear” about seriously obvious scripted portions of a video that are far removed from how the person normally speaks - I think it is quite jarring and have unsubscribed from people who do that regularly. I don’t leave nasty comments etc and just don’t watch content that I don’t like. I’m not really into instagram and don’t do tik tok at all as I like longer form content. I’m someone who has watched youtube for quite a long time aka years and years and have changed who I watch fairly regularly when the content no longer interested me. As far as I’m aware I don’t watch any “controversial” creators and have no desire to do so. I’m not interested in drama either - that’s what tv is for and there I also record so I can fast forward through ads 😂. I don’t expect everyone to like what I like or dislike and try to find people who have some of the same requirements as I do for products. That is rarely the bigger creators tbh as many are much much younger than I am, living in a different climate, have a different skin tone or type etc. We can vote re content with views or subscription but that’s about it IMO. If you don’t like what someone is doing then watch someone else is how I see it. As to PR getting more favourable reviews from creators then I think it has to just because it’s “gifted”. Saving up to buy something makes me more critical of a product than something that isn’t costing a lot, so “free” product would probably be similar I would imagine (is it free if it comes with strings attached? - in my opinion no it isn’t). Best wishes x

  • @FloatinginDreams

    @FloatinginDreams

Exactly! I find I am more critical to of products that I have to save up for or have on a wishlist for a while before I can get them. It can take months for me to bite the bullet and to then be disappointed is an extra blow.

Does receiving PR/sponsorships skew reviewers' opinions? Definitely, yes! Additionally, there was some nasty drama surrounding the indie brand Sugar Drizzle, and personally, I despise with all my heart the mob attitude of the content creators towards this brand. Even more ridiculous is that it all started because one of the beauty gurus considered the owner rude. Yes, because she perceived a bit of rudeness, she went on a rampage of "let's not support the brand anymore."

Jen Phelps takes no sponsorships. Because she wants to be honest and real is why she doesn’t. This is why I’ve watched her for so long. With that said we’re all adults and when it’s sponsored and disclosed we can make our own decisions. However I strongly disagree that sponsorships are the only way to make a living on KZread. I give her as an example. I’m not against influencers taking sponsorships. However for me when they’re not disclosed I do t want them anymore. This is what. Mean about we’re all adults making our own decisions

  • @FloatinginDreams

PR and sponsorships are different things. I think Jen is one of the few bigger names in the game who seems to be doing PR in a responsible way. But don't forget that she has also explained that if it hadn't been for her husband being the main provider for her and her family for the first years she could not have hit it off. You either need a sponsorship from a brand or someone in your vincinity to help you out to get started.
