TY for the review Cody. I appreciate you are always "honest" and you don't only tell your feelings but you try to imagine all kind of players reactions. For us we look for a good WWII light eastern front board game from a long time. Never found it for the moment. We were close with "No Retreat" too but both use many cards and we are not speaking English as native language so it's a little hard. We look for a "kind of" CCN eastern front but more strategic and high scale than M44! - Best regards - Keep the Faith - Guillaume - City of Tours - France

I've watched this review several times. It's a great review. It does look like a different type of game. I also agree, it's about playing a game, not fighting a battle. Thanks for posting.

The easiest game I ever played on Barbarossa was the old AH game from the early 60s, "Stalingrad." I own Carl Paradis's "No Retreat: The Russian Front," but I didn't see "Absolute War" as all that easier to get into. Having said that, I'd get "Absolute War" if I thought I could find someone who'd play it with me.

I thought this game was supposed to be easier than no retreat russian front but I do not think that is the case. I am having a hard time with the rules but I will try to give it at least one play through before making a final assessment.

There is complexity here for sure, but I found it easier than a lot of hex and counter games.

I agree with your closing statement regarding historical accuracy vs abstraction and playability. I feel if the game imparts the sense of realism with the freedom of choice in game play, you got a winner. I remember debating SPI vs Avalon Hill games, where SPI rules railroaded the game for sake of realism, but left the experience as rather constricted and dry. How do you feel this game compares to your recent review of Russian Campaign 5th?

Another Great and Fair review, Cody! Good thing is, there’s lots of different games (including hardcore sims) for every kind of Gamer (or Wargamer) out there! As a newer “Wargamer” I share more of your sentiments about Wargames being on the lighter side. I don’t want anything too involved. I don’t have the time for Big rules heavy games right now either. And certainly, more complex games are better suited to those that have been playing tougher games for a good while.

Hi Cody, great review. I am an avid board gamer. This game looks really interesting. I love the subject matter. I love games with lots of strategy and depth but still fairly accessible. I like to play these games with my friends and I like games that I can teach to my friends fairly quickly. Do you think this game fits that bill? And can you recommend a wargame for say roman warfare or modern warfare that has a lot of strategy and tactics but is still very accessible? Thanks.

  • @TheDiscriminatingGamer

Everybody definition of easy to teach and accessible are always different. Have you looked into the Commands & Colors games? Memoir ‘44, C&C Napoleonics, C&C Ancients. Great light wargames. Might be just what you’re looking for.

Hi Cody, Thanks for the review. Maybe you can help me out discriminating between this game and "No Retreat-The eastern front". The latter is clearly a classic hex & counter game but it also has fast and light scenarios. What do you think? If you could only play one, which would it be?

The designer offered this game to me for free because I spotted some errors early on. However, once I continued finding more errors he suddenly told me to stop it and delete my posts because it made the game look bad. I refused and decided to decline his free game offer also. I was not a playtester. I just found the game randomly on BGG. (He had already started the printing process so fixing the errors was not free anymore I think.)

Hey Cody, am really interested on the way you played solo... was it a BOT? tell me... the game looks good, production wise... like the idea you mark the units as ATTACK, DEFEND, etc. ... being a strategic game, what is the stacking limits?*** Just received a new game from DRACO IDEAS (Spanish company) called "Help Arrives", about the Spanish Civil War... production quality fantastic! Counters a little thinner than I might hoped but very serviceable. They also include VERY DEDICATED solo rules. The rule book is full color, and VERY ACCESSIBLE. I think you'd like this game... check it out.

It's epic, but not a monster. There is no 'advanced' game, just an extra rule on partisans. Mostly it's just different: no dice, no hex grids with ZOCs, each 'unit' seems, and often is anyway, an individual, seldom do you have two or more identical, they are 'bespoke'! Haven't seen this since Ty Bomba's Fortress Stalingrad, usually every corps or division identical, Dunnigan was first to go beyond that with 'untried' Soviet units in PGG?
