Hardly the triumph that the Third Symphony was, although the actual playing by the kids is still exemplary. The conductor is not at all impressive, from what I can tell. He has poor control, in that there are bad balances, which cannot be entirely blamed on the recording process, such as when certain subsidiary parts are given undue prominence, totally uncalled for. Moreover, his tempi in the outer movements are poorly conceived. There are too many spasmodic changes of tempo in the first movement, with some places being taken far faster and hectically than they have any business going, resulting in an excessively histrionic, melodramatic presentation, aside from fracturing the music' continuity. The last movement sounds as if it is out of control altogether, running completely amok. All of this indicates to me the conductor's lack of sensitivity to what the music might properly call for; the tempos and dynamics have to be very carefully and evenly applied. The camera work is very poor also. As in most videotaped performances, one would like to on occasion see the players as they play principal lines; for example, the oboe solo at the beginning of the second movement. Why was everything filmed from stage right rather than the rear of the hall, using only one camera, and depriving the viewers of watching the players in action. Definitely could have been done better. Hopefully the Fifth Symphony will be a better presentation; these kids deserve to be shown in a much better light, aside from working under a much better conductor than this.
