#TBT
Jump forward a few years and Warhammer 40,000 2nd Edition has grown massively in popularity. Codexes are released for the first time and the customization of Wargear and vehicles has been massively enhanced by its core expansion; Dark Millenium.
I paint up a fully 2nd Edition Angels of Death Codex force of Fleshtearers to take on Chris' Orks, who have swapped Rogue Trader Units for Mega Armour and more vehicles!

Green foam balls with red toothpicks! If there was any terrain more iconic of the time it would have to be flatpack card terrain that came in the box.
I remember playing this in my 20's . I so want to see a vortex grenades' to be used!!
I remember the strategy card Virus Outbreak was often removed from the strategy cards deck as a house rule in almost every place i played, it was often so overpowered, especially with armies comprising of lots of models, and could quickly make the game very one sided!
Feel like I just traveled in time back to 1995. Great memories playing 2nd Ed 40k. Haven't played a game of it in 8 years.
This is the first edition I played out of the house. What a big bowl of 'memberberries. I can remember painting the single pose minis watching TMNT cartoons in the afternoon.
Can't believe I'd forgotten the close combat rules for 2nd ed. Madness, slower but did make it feel more contested
That board is giving me flashbacks to my local game store in 2001. Love it.
Great to see 2nd Ed battles. They seem to be getting really popular.
Gearing up to play a bunch of this with the kids this summer. Deployment is actually according to rulebook 24" apart and 12" in from each side. It think you're thinking of Warmachine/Hordes. Too many games rattling around up there, m'right? Gives us an excuse to re-read our collection, though. Edit: Yeah, I realized this is essentially the same thing. My bad. Tired from working all day. Of course, it's an important distinction on a non-standard table, and then there's that bit about being 12" in from each side as well.
This reminded me how silly 2nd edition actually was, blast template weapons misfiring, strategy cards to play havoc, and war gear cards gave the battles a quasi roleplay experience. Movement was always an issue, the battles are less dynamic but the melee rules gave a lot of drama to the experience. Would love to see how imperial guard go against orks - these are fantastic, way better than current edition reports @GMG team! Keep up the great work!

@@LapsedPacifist AOE scatterdice and templates, perils of the warp, rolling for vehicle damage outcomes, a card for every single piece of equipment? Definitely takes itself less seriously than the current editions no?

Revisionist bullshit.
In second edition there wasn't any grotz, they were called gretchins ;) Super cool batrep! It makes me want to play second edition again :) I wish you could play against eldars.
Utterly awesome game as always and it was fantastic to see all the wackiness that made 2nd edition such a fun experience to play. It's also great to see all the classic figures on the table! I'd love to see more early edition games from you guys, possibly with some different armies too!
I know it's entirely nostalgia and the new models are infinitely superior, but it brings my little nerd heart so much joy to see those 2nd edition plastic Marines marching out into battle with their boltguns across their chests like they're in a parade. (I'm just starting a Chaos Marine army currently, and it'll have a couple of the similar old Khorne Berzerkers, for the same reason. It's not even a Khorne warband, but I want the old-timers mixed in with the new, and Slaanesh can seduce anything...)
The offscreen "Hell yeah!" was the perfect end to a great scrap. Can't wait to see the the final round!
2nd Ed was the edition I started with, and Angels of Death was my first codex. I'm pretty sure my first ever GW purchase was a blister of Death Company
2nd Ed has so much flavor. It’s super cool to watch.
I love 2nd ed so much. Great battle as usual :) Just one thing. The Orks doubble their strategy rating when rolling for who goes first, so they have strategy rating 6
Love these batreps. Takes me right back. Orks double their strategy rating for going first btw.
Yet another fine battle broadcast! It was all awesome but I especially like the vehicle mayhem! I dimly recall playing second edition.
I`m not a collector of anything GW....and i never watch a game... but boy Ash brings joy to a mans heart with these old school videos.. love the models and the fun you boys have...Orcs are just dangerous in anything with wheels on...! Loved it... Be nice to see it played out with the latest rules.... see the difference...
In this grudge match between omnicidal angry anthropomorphic athlete's foot and ravening space draculas hopped up on PCP, who will win? Will it be hilarious? Tune in to find out.
Great battle report with the 2nd edition rules and the classic models that death company is sweet. Just a note the ork could definitely have used a krak grenade in combat with the rhino :)

If they had one!
Petition for a recreation of the “Ambush at Volsci Gorge” battle report from White Dwarf 219. 😁
The nostalgia is real!
Thanks for the Battle report Ash, it's my birthday today so the 2nd edition battle report makes it even better.
2nd édition orks are m'y favorite orks. Thanks for the show ! 🤗 Édit : if i remember correctly you could ignore coherency when charging.
Right off the bat I just want to say I've been thoroughly enjoying your 2nd ed series, one of my favourite editions by far. Now at time of writing I'm only about 12mins in and just paused to comment. I know you've been drip feeding in rules as you said so it isn't overwhelming. But as you are now using the codex armies I just wondered; are you omitting the Ork army special rules on purpose or by mistake? Pg49 Ork Codex: - strategy rating 3 for set-up, but 6 for first turn roll. - limited missions, no Witch Hunt or Assassins for Orks Not a criticism, I really just wondered, I know there are tons of little rules to keep on top of; especially for a system/edition that hasn't been played in a while. I just randomly remembered these rules while watching your game set-up. Anyroad, I'm gonna get back to watching the game and get my nostalgia fix. Keep on being awesome and take care ;)
Ah, yes. 2nd Edition. This is when I started. It was fun and the 2nd most often played ruleset for me. The most played ruleset was 3rd Edition. By me anyway.
Thumbs up just for painting all those minis guys. Great work
Wow just showing u why 2nd was the best even at half strength without all the add-ons
I started in 2nd Ed so my fav edition.. (Yeah!) - And I jumped on the bandwagon with the first Codex (SWs).. Loving Marines and Vikings (com, ing for Sweden).. I loved it.

I like the 2nd Ed-y terrain too! :D
Waaaagh! Stompin' umies iz ware itz at! Pretty sure it was mandatory to do the cockney Ork accents when we were playing in the 90s. Great stuff - thanks!
Ah,I forgot about the old war gear and command cards! Lol
Awesome fun - I love the craziness of the vehicle rules and also really like the melee in this edition. I can’t wait to see the dark millennium episode.
Woot been looking forward to this since you announced it. I don't expect an hour and half video when you bring in the psychic phase from Dark Millennium.
I just got my hands on a second edition in box Imperial Firebase the other day. I'm looking forward to getting it assembled and having some second edition games.
Awesome. Love the 2ed and your battlereport. Orks have Strategie of 6 for deciding who has first turn. Was one of their special rules.
Thanks Ash, really enjoying this series. Looking forward to a Vortex grenade being unleashed in the next one ;)
Orks look so much more fun in w40k 2nd ed. :S
2nd edition was awesome! Wargear cards were great..and weapons like vortex grenades were wild 🤣😎
More of this please!
it could be great a battle between your flesh tearers and some tyranids
Official Tournament rules said "destroy the Virus Outbreak card"
That brings me back... thanks man.
These throwback games are so relaxed and fun. Though it is a shame that the Snotlings didn't get a chance to use their cannon. The vehicle rules in 3rd were so bonkers; things careening and exploding all over the place. I like to imagine the Runt Herder being dragged across the field by his snotlings; like an overloaded dog-walker being dragged through a park towards a dead fox. Was it 4th Edition where you could shoot in to, and out of, area cover; but not through it? It made woods, bushes and ruins so useful. I really miss the inclusion of Combat Drugs in the fluff for the modern game. I can see why they are left out; but, my idea of Space Marines is criminals on combat drugs.

3e was where Area Terrain became a thing. Basically the same rules for WFB6 and 40k3 :)
You should have said, "like Kurt Angle, with a broken freakin' neck"
Thanks for doing this, really enjoyed it!
57:41 'disagreements'. The fun part of wargaming 😅
Hey there, long time lurker of the channel here. Any chance you would go as far as to play more games of 2nd Edition with the full array of codexes? I would definitely love to see how armies like Imperial Guard or Tyranids acted back in the day.
VP question for the Death Company going berserk. Are they considered a destroyed unit and surrender the 3 VPs?
Yes, been waiting for this! Thanks 😊
I have to say that those green cactuses are just 10/10, I love the cheesy aesthetic from rogue trader and 2e 😅
2nd edition was the best!
Can he fix this thing? I Don't know can he fix dead crew? lol
beautiful thank you for that
This is just wacky fun in comparison to more recent editions
Beautiful :D
We still play 2nd edition rules.
This series is great
What pg in the rule book let's characters pick out targets? Missed that.
If the ork warbanner went into the bunker, would the 12” radius for the reroll be measured from the bunker profile?
Such a. Cool idea. Love this!!!!?
Hi Ash, do you have a preferred or favourite edition of 40k?

Probably whatever one I’m working on in the moment. They’ve all got something to love.
Does anyone know where to find the chunky round evergreen type trees? The really big ones Ash has on the bases. GW used to call them like bottle brush trees

Ha - I was going to ask the same question!
WAAAGH!
Is there going to be a deciding match?
great batrep guys. Keep it up!
Neat
I own almost all of the 2nd Ed codexes....apart from Angels of Death. I must remedy that!
lot of souvenir
Looking at these fully painted potato miniatures makes you fully realize how far we have come.
If you actually remember playing this edition, you're considered high risk population for COVID
Dang the models were ugly as hell back then. I cant believe how much money I spent on that terrible metal.
