The movie revealed he left a $6 million dollar deal on the table for a solo album to do Heart Break in 1987, and not to mention him being offered a solo deal as a kid but turned it down for the group. He had opportunity to be huge as a solo artist but always put the group first.

    ...but wait, Ralph stans forget that he nearly sabotaged the group in 1986 by not showing up for the Lou Rawls Gold Awards in Memphis, leaving the BBD guys nearly stranded in terms of what they should have performed that night...the next day from out of the blue he springs up the solo album on the rest of the guys....

    Well, when you're young and wet behind the ears, swimming in a sea of greedy music executives that constantly gas your head up for their own financial agendas, PLUS your 'friends' are constantly ostracizing you and giving you shit about things that are out of your control (being pushed to the front by management, having all the lead parts etc), immature and impulsive decisions can happen. Was skipping out on the show the right thing to do? Hell no. But I understand why it happened, having witnessed firsthand how the music industry and the politics within can sour so-called "solid" friendships, especially with younger artists. I mean, these guys were still between the ages of 17 and 19 when that show took place. Besides, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Doing that show gave them the confidence to do BBD four years later.

    PNdotCom Ralph was not being professional by deliberately missing that show...there's no justification for leaving them hanging...he claims to have been "ostracised" as you Ralph fans tend to believe...but as the leader of the group he surely had something to do with that...possibly a bloated ego that made him wanna see his own group fail and being embarrassed just to prove his "worth" to the group...we talk about how that incident turned into the "blessing" of BBD but it was only because they were strong willed men who decided to keep it going despite the potentially huge setback...plus they said it was Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis who gave them the idea of doing BBD not the Memphis show...so let's not confuse matters here...

  • @JavonteTreble

    @JavonteTreble

    We *know* that Jam and Lewis gave them the idea to branch off as BBD. Nobody said that the idea *came* from the Memphis show, but that performance not only proved to *them* that they could make it without Ralph, but it also showed *fans* that there was talent within the group other than just Ralph. Therefore, it's not at all unreasonable to believe that *that experience* played at least a small role in their decision to go on with BBD. I'm fairly certain *that* is what the other person was getting at.

    Ta'Sha Davis. Let's not overdramatize a situation whereby you sound ignorant. Yes, I applaud Ralph for his loyalty because 1. They brought him into the group 2. People in the OP don't get down like that 3. The community would hate him. I am sorry that you feel that way but it is an inaccurate assumption. Bobby and Mike were in a group, Ralph and Ricky were in a group, and Ronnie was in a group. They all stopped, but Bobby continued to be in talent shows because performing was his passion. Mike was into basketball and Ralph was into marital arts. If Bobby had never started the group with the help of friends Mike and Ricky there would not be a Ralph. Bobby brought in Travis and Corey . Sadly one died and the other left. Ricky then brought in Ralph. Brooke brought in his nephew Ronnie. I can't say much for the others but I do believe that there would have been a Bobby Brown regardless of a group. He was destined for greatness. I don't think he would have stopped until he achieved his goal. It was meant for Bobby too get stage fright that day so that NE can be born. Always try to think before you speak.

    Ralph made a lot of sense when he went on the New Edition soliloquy at the end. NE is the mother act and it's a family show., which is why they can't bring their more raunchy solo stuff into it....But also I feel like Ralph at this time was seeking to be recognized for his lead role and outsized contribution to the group's success, but his brothers had all become bigger hits than he did--without him. That must have hurt and that is what I'm seeing from him in this interview.

    Ralph should've did a more bad boy vibe like Bobby Instead of going sensitive

  • @ExtravertmE

    @ExtravertmE

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@GoodClipsTV he tried that with the "It's Goin Down" album... Didn't work and felt try-hard and inauthentic. He should've done a Justin Timberlake sort of thing: strong choreography, Casanova swag, with some good guy ethic in the mix; but the "stone cold gent" thing and "do what I gotta do" were too on-the-nose and borderline corny... "Sensitivity" worked as a one-off but he should've dug deeper for a more complex and authentic thrust... He was too pressed and self-doubting to approach it level-headedly and really should've started to establish independence from NE. As much as I love "Heart Break", sometimes it seems he should've took that $6 mil deal.

    This is gold! The actors nailed this scene/interview! I'm not going to lie, when I saw the cast on BET awards I was like ehhhh idk...they don't really look like them.. but the acting and the singing and the dancing and the souls and personalities of the actor matched so well!!! Astounding! I can see why they chose to cast who they.

    It's good that BET put out a clearer version of this interview and included the date. The person who posted this interview on youtube years ago didn't include the date so I thought that this took place late in 1990 or early 1991. In the BET movie, they re-created this scene and then skipped over 6 years to 1996 when they actually did the next New Edition album called Home Again. I believe Brooke Payne's character in the movie said something like, "They Had To Do This Album & Tour Because All Of Their 2nd Albums Flopped"!! I guess that's the reason they skipped over everything that happened with New Edition from 1990 to 1996. Bobby's Humpin Around album(which sold a lot, it wasn't really a flop), Bobby marrying Whitney Houston, Bobby getting into trouble all the time and Biv introducing the world to Boyz II Men, ABC and MC Brains(remember him!!) are the notable things that happened with New Edition during those years that they skipped over. Brooke Payne's line about New Edition's 2nd solo projects being flops also got me thinking that they probably should've started recording a New Edition album a couple months after this interview in 1990 like Ralph said. Maybe if that would've happened, they wouldn't have run into the problems they had on the Home Again tour, and the personal problems that resulted from that tour being cancelled. But it looks Mike Bivins had the 'Big Head", thought he was bigger than the group and would've caused conflicts with everyone if they started recording a new album at that time.

    Doc Central NE is Ralph's solo career a lot of people don't get that and in turn I don't think Ralph gets it because people don't respect it. Ralph is the only lead of NE he sings the bulk of NE music the movie told you that. Ralph's voice is what made NE songs so enduring. Bobby got the New Jack sound BBD hip hop smooth out R&B and Johnny grown man take you to church voice along with Ralph's butter soft voice makes these guys so legendary.

Busby signed Johnny for Mike & forced Ralph to do another album. in 88 Ralph was over shadowed by Bobby and the rest is history.

    Regardless of what, New Edition is one of the most innovative and talented groups of all time, PERIOD. From actual kids on the pop tip like J5 to their grown Temptations vibe in the early Johnny Gill showing, to their New Jack ways with Bobby and BBD and smooth R&B of Ralph and Johnny. Heads of State, RBRM....they find new and inventive ways to showcase themselves...this is my big sister's generation, the music I grew up on as a kid, along with Prince MJ Janet and soooooo much more. 40 years strong and they are ALL still here.....right here these young men in their prime with a plan and to think they and we all can look back at this and say.....damn....what a time to live in. Just think, 20 years ago we got The Temptations movie.....5 years before that, The Jacksons movie...last year and this year brought us The New Edition and Bobby Brown Story. Hoping that future musicians can learn from all of this....
