TAZ Animatic: Petals to the Metal

Ойын-сауық

I cried my eyes out during this scene, I knew I had to draw this scene out. I'm playing around with color and boy did this take longer than expected because of it! Hope ya'll enjoy!

Adding color when Griffin added music was a nice touch. It really matched the affect it had when I listened to the episode the first time

This might a bit unrelated, but can I just say how kind Taako was in this scene? Like, a lot of the time he's seen as an ass, and in a lot of instances he truly is, but at the same time, he just... drops that when it counts? And here it's clear, Magnus and Merle are still joking lightly, but Taako is vocal in how he despises this outcome, and his replies to Sloane are sincere, and in the end he's ready to defend them if need be. I just... I love that a lot. Especially considering his backstory, and all the bits he's missing, and how withdrawn and defensive he often is, and how, despite that, he sometimes can't help but be empathetic and vulnerable. I love Taako a lot.

Something so underrated and that you did VERY well is when Taako just refuses to accept that there's nothing they can do for Hurley. It's kind of glossed over in the actual clip, but it's very good and it makes me feel feelings.

I was sold due to Phandalin's destruction. I had the podcast on as background filler and was like idk. Then a town died. What? Go back. They failed? That never happens! A lot of campaigns seem to have loopholes to prevent failure and are just about getting through the story rather than telling one.

in all honesty, i just wasn't feeling the whole petals to the metal arc, so this scene wasn't as moving to me as i'm sure it was for most other people. however, this is still a great animatic, and i think the color at the end really added something special, so i'm glad you took the time and effort to play around with it.

thank you so much for this animatic, this is the most emotional part of the podcast for me. you did it so much justice!!! evetytime i hear this part i start crying, i'm not sure why. i love everything about this animation, the colour of the petals, the change after hurley and sloane become the tree, the poses, the way that sloane looks at hurley, the designs of all the characters, the silly touch of the sombrero on taako, everything about this is so beautiful.

I remember listening to this podcast for the first time and going "haha, funny DND shenanigans!", but then this scene happened and it was an emotional gut-punch out of nowhere. I didn't expect this podcast to give me so many feelings, but it has made me cry numerous times. Balance was just incredible and I think this was the first moment that made me acknowledge and appreciate the depth the story has.

For me, this was the moment that turned Balance into something truly special. Up until then, I still felt like I was listening to a humorous podcast as a rowdy family played a fun DnD game with an interesting original story and some cool thematic settings and ideas. This was the first time that I cried, though. I found myself unexpectedly moved by the imagery described in this scene and the way that these two characters found peace. It gave more emotional weight to the Tres Horny Boys' quest, and made the potential consequences of their successes and failures feel more personal. It's the moment I went from enjoying The Adventure Zone to loving it.

This is so good and so powerful! Seeing it animated like this gives it that much more emotion and your artwork and timing and the transitions are beautifully done. Like another commenter said, I love how you add that moment of humor and levity at the end without breaking the immersion or emotions of the scene.
