Taylor Swift & Martin McDonagh | Directors on Directors

Ойын-сауық

Taylor Swift and Martin McDonagh sit down to discuss their respective experiences with directing. Taylor goes deep into working with Sadie Sink and what her plans are with directing features as well as her latest record, 'Midnights.' Martin McDonagh touches on the techniques he's learned over the years working with Colin Farrell for 'The Banshees of Inisherin' and what it's like working with a donkey.

It focused on the only one thing that she wants us to focus on: Her Career, instead of who she's dating at the moment, or any other private personal life things of hers. What a great conversation. So often when I see interviews of Taylor Swift, it's like she can't forget the audience is there and she kind of has a vibe of still being in performance mode, and the interviewers don't usually seem especially interested in her as a person, which doesn't help. But here, both participants were so relaxed and engaged and just having a very genuine conversation. It brought out so much more depth.

Taylor notices everything. I think that surprises people sometimes. She's curious, well read and articulate. At their core, each of them is a story seller. Martin started as a playwright and Taylor as a songwriter. He progressed to short films and then feature length. Taylor has done the same, except she is much earlier in her journey as a director. I think Martin knew she had been contracted to do the feature length, because he asked her about it. I think it's fantastic to have this one in the can. It will be interesting to look back on this interview five films from now for both of them.

So martin writes the way some people daydream. You kinda know the way you want it to go but sometimes it just has a life of its own and it fully takes the reins. It reminded me of the way Dali would do surrealism, sort of dancing on and around that line that separates the state of awake and aware from the asleep and fever-dreaming one, and trusting the subconscious to do whatever needs to be done. Whatever it is that's pushing to come out, don't try to make sense of it and manage it, just let it come out and exist. It has its reasons and its rights. Honestly, creating like that feels just incredibly cathartic and fulfilling. Hey, if I'm not wrong, Taylor basically wrote the song All Too Well just like that, didn't she? in a spur-of-the-moment, fluid and vulnerable single 15-minute take during rehearsals.

Because he probably has been in the game long enough to know that most people are coming to this video to see her, not him, and he does not want to be dragged by her huge fanbase for mistreating an "upcoming" "female" director that frankly isn't in the same league as him when it comes to output and quality of output at the moment.

@@jehle1777 A bit? TS has a policy that she only ever does scripted interviews. It's well known in the entertainment industry at this point so I guess Martin is really pulling it off. Who wouldn't be a bit cautious about how they interact with someone with a fanbase that will come out of the woodworks to police those who even breathe the woman's name lol? It's good that both people have manners and are cordial to one another. I just don't think it goes really beyond that. The original commenter had an opinion; this is mine lol. Who knows if the guy was actually interested in what she had to say? We don't know him. Who hasn't used a nice persona to work through a job interview or a high-stake opportunity? It's all just presentation.

How believable is the whole scenario of someone this image-obsessed being this watched and not exercising control? Between the two of us, I guess you're the one who has connections that have actually worked behind the scenes of a broadcast/media studio -- you clearly know your stuff. Again, you are free to think what you want. I wasn't really answering to you anyway with my OG comment.

Not all the comments being Taylor this Taylor that, proud of Taylor, versatile Taylor, when Martin McDonagh is literally right there... This pairing is a joke, not because of Taylor but because of the nature of conversation she attracts. I had no doubts that she's "good enough" to be in a dialogue with Martin, that she's an intelligent person that can do that much, but God the comments are boring.

Yes, congrats to Taylor, who really is having a moment in her career! 😊 I did feel a lurch in my chest when I saw the word “respectful” used. She is respectful in the confines of this video. But she is also a capitalist and one who has been somewhat ruthless in her rise to the top. I think that’s important to remember. While I love her musicianship/artistry, I don’t think we should be putting her up as some kind of example of nobility. These are issues I keep coming up against as a fan of Taylor’s music. Why are we not trying to hold Taylor accountable for the time she took to Twitter to defend herself using feminism about a line in the tv show Ginny and Georgia yet remained silent when her fans unleashed racist threats of death on the actress (a woman of color)? This was two years ago and still no comment from her or her team, despite Tweets she made in 2020 around the time of the George Floyd protests promising to be “loudly and ferociously anti-racist”. The Ginny and Georgia incident happened less than a year later. As a result, her claims in that anti-racist tweet ring hollow, as does her claim to feminism. There was also her attempt to silence a blogger for saying she should denounce white supremacy in 2017. That was just not it. She could have sent the cease-and-desist to the white supremacists claiming that she shared their beliefs instead. That move was very disturbing to me and I feel like no one really talks about it, despite coverage of it by NPR, Time, Newsweek, NBC, and other major news outlets. And then she told her fans to “Let (Scott Borchetta and Scooter Braun) know how you feel” in response to the Masters Controversy, only to say nothing when fans released their addresses online and sent death threats to him and his children. It’s giving “I’m a super powerful person who gets my way by siccing my rabid fans on all my foes” and I am beyond grossed out by it. Someone could have died. I have literally spoken with people whose argument was that Scooter Braun had that coming to him. Wtf? My impression is that he is a cog in a larger machine, not the problem in and of himself. Taylor signed a contract, after all. I respect the fight for artists’ rights to their music, but I do not condone the takedown of another person, ESPECIALLY when death threats are involved and their HOME ADDRESS is being released. Not that I think she’s actually reading this, but Tay, I have loved you for years (since Debut in 2006) and spent a lot of time, listens, and money supporting you. but at this point I’m not sure about you. This is not a cute look. To her other fans, all the love to you, and let’s try and hold her accountable on our platforms, whether that be TikTok or IG or YT or Twitter. Being a fan isn’t just celebrating someone and kissing the ground they walk on. It’s a bit eerie to me some peoples’ allegiance to her outweighs their principles of right and wrong. Again, I have spoken with people who actually DEFEND these things, believe it or not. 😭 Labelling me as a hater can only be an attempt to dismiss valid concerns because I very much have my own attachment to her. Went to a concert at age 19 in 2011 and cried tears of joy when she came on stage. Her lyrics are beautiful and she is immensely talented. I have fond memories associated with the releases of each of her albums. But I know how these situations make me feel and I have trouble being fully present to appreciate her musicianship and lyricism like I used to. Can anyone relate to this? I have been treated really terribly for sharing this opinion. I just feel like there has to be room in this fandom for accountability, right? If she’s our “fave”, why can’t our fave be held accountable? It feels like the only two accepted modes of existing with regard to Taylor are “Stan” or “pro-cancel-culture / hater”, and this feels very toxic to me. She’s been heavily criticized for her silence, and in the ways she has responded to this criticism, I applaud her. In the situations where using her voice really counts, I have indeed never heard silence quite this loud. 😭
