the problem with the fine line girl was also just that she was being so arrogant and had no actual knowledge of tattoo culture and procedures. client red flags 1. wanting to get her neck done but not having any other tattoos 2. not researching for a fine line artist to get a fine line tattoo and 3. thinking hailey beiber’s tattoos are good lol

I feel like the tattoo artist was talking down to her to match her attitude. Though we can't be sure without knowing his side of the story. Plus, she brought young children (under 10, when they're at the peak of rambunctious) into a tattoo shop. I can't think of a single artist that wouldn't be at least a little pissed about that, especially if they've adopted their mom's attitude too. If you work anywhere in customer service, you see people with this attitude all the time, and know that they exaggerate and refuse to listen to the person who actually works there and knows what they're doing.

TBH I took my niece (who I think was 6 at the time) with me to get a tattoo when I was 18. She couldn’t get back where the tattoo was being done, and bless her she never went out the front door. She did ask the guy several times what he was doing to her aunty. Then afterwards we literally had to run up the road to the cinema, to watch the Borrowers. I almost passed out.

Yeah I thought that about the child too…. I had to bring my toddler to a shop yesterday to have my eyebrow piercing changed (the person who did it used incorrect jewelry so it was like an emergency appt) I asked if my toddler could come in if I strapped him into a stroller. 😅 they were okay with it, but only because this was a 10 minute jewelry change… I would never even try to bring my child in for a tattoo appt… my 7 year old begs me to go every time because she is so interested and fascinated by tattoos… but I always tell her she has a few years before she can go with me!

That lady complaining about her tattoo artist annoys me so much. Yes, he was a bit condescending, but he was right. When I got my first tattoo I wanted something small and intricate on the inside of my wrist. My artist told me outright that they wouldn't do it because it wouldn't look good or be legible in a few years, so I came back to them and asked for a similar design larger and down my forearm. It turned out great and since then I've gone back to that artist for a bigger piece and will soon be getting my third with them. If a tattoo artist rejects your design because they don't think it'll work, that's a good tattoo artist. They're potentially losing out on income to try to make sure you get a good tattoo

My first tattoo was an anchor on my wrist and I wanted it "upside down" and since it was my first tattoo my artist kept saying "are sure you sure?" and "it's upside down". I know a lot of people say they want them "upside down" because it's for them, all your tattoo are for you, but I almost had to fight him on it but once he asked me why he realized and stopped. I wanted my anchor "upside down" as a representation of not being anchored down unless I have my hands up and need to stop for a bit

We've really only her word for it that he was talking down to her. She may have felt that way but that doesn't make it true. He was possibly trying to be too gentle in talking her away from it. And we don't know that she hadn't exaggerated just for the vid. Sure he may have been condescending eve, assuming she was a child, but she was "immediately" aware he thought she was a kid, but she didn't set him right from the beginning. Either way, I find it hilarious she called it her tattoo hell, it's not like she ended up with an awful tattoo, and he likely saved her from making a big mistake. It seems to me she hadn't understood the scale of the tattoo on the hand and assumed it was smaller than it might actually be (once you scale the hand up) and even that looks like the ink is already feathering on the lines (not so obvious on the video, but if you Google the original image it does), and she wanted it smaller. 🤦

Maybe the reason the tattoo artist was so condescending was because of her attitude? She just gave of the vibes of someone who thinks that "tattoo artist" is a lesser job or that it makes him stupid or something compared to someone who works in an office. *Also won't he have known her age because I'm assuming they would've asked her to provide ID before the session started?!

The girl complaining about the artist reminded me of a customer one of our guest artist that came into our shop was messaging. She had a girl on instagram messaging her telling her she wanted a face tattoo of a couple butterflies. No problem. Some of the artist in the shop have face tattoos and the artist has done some great face tattoos before. BUT, as she questioned the client, she found out that not only is she 18, but it would be her first and only tattoo she would have. She immediately messaged her and said she didn't feel comfortable doing it. Some people may not like that, but artist have the right to turn down customers whenever they seem fit. Face tattoos HURT and are almost impossible to hide. I'm glad she turned it down because she cared about that girl enough to let her know that once she's matured, gotten more tattoos, and is certain in that tattoo, some other artist could just see it ss a quick buck and just do it for her without a second thought.

The artist told me it’d be too small for all the details and asked if I’d be ok with it being larger, so I said it was fine. I really appreciated her input; that girl with the neck tattoo is definitely acting a tad superior. If she knew right away that he'd assumed she was a kid why didn't she get in there first with some lighthearted comments about how she knows she looks 15, but she's actually 23. He might have stopped being so extra nice about trying to reason with/accommodate her and been more blunt & to the point. I think she saw the pic and had no reference for the scale of the tattoo on the hand. I matched the hand size to my own and the reference tattoo was about 3cm, why did she assume she could take and 8 letter word and make it the same size (or smaller) than the 5 letter neck tattoo? 🤦🤷 I don't get why some people like this don't listen to tattooists as the experts they are. If it was a plumber telling them their aesthetic tiny pipes carrying the toilet waste to the sewer would be too thin for poop to pass through with getting clogged, you would expect they would listen to them, right? But perhaps not though, perhaps she'd just accuse him of not knowing how to use thin pipes on the toilet. (sorry for the poop analogy, it was what came to mind first lol).

I did my $10,000 half sleeve in sessions. At $1,000 average per session, it not only was how I could make it work financially but also, the artist couldn't tattoo more than 6 hours per session before his back and hands hurt too much. Then, with my sensitive scar prone skin, it really couldn't handle a new layer of work without a month of healing time. We got to know each other pretty well over the 11 months (I skipped December as I didn't want to spend money on tattoos instead of gifts for my kids) it took to complete. That was actually just the outer portion of my half sleeve. Working with a new artist for my inner portion, similar situation. 99% ink coverage in bright color realism is slow going. I appreciate an artist who won't push my skin or budget too far. Even with precautions, we are still dealing with a few scars here and there. I leak for DAYS after. I have gone through a whole huge roll second skin and half way through a second. I have to change several times the first week. Depending on placement

The girl and her artist seem like a match made in hell. She was a demanding client and he was an uncooperative artist. Sure she was asking for something that might not work well, but there were definitely things he could have done to make that tattoo work better. The stencil placement was awful and he definitely could've gone a little smaller. Change the font into something more legible but still with the handwritten vibe, something with more negative space. And he probably should've shown her some examples of how tattoos like that heal up, to try an actually get her on his side. Idk how dramatic her retelling of the story is, but if the artist actually suggested getting the word across her entire forearm, the dude just had no intention of ever tattooing something in the style she wanted. Which is fine, but... Reject the client, then. Send her to someone else in the shop. In the words of reddit, "everyone sucks here".

Honestly I feel like the artist was just being honest. neck tattoos, even small ones, are a huge deal. When he tried to tell her this she said that she was only getting a tattoo "this big" and again showed the size of the tiny 5 letter tattoo that would have been literally impossible with a longer word. As far as him saying he didn't want her to make the same mistakes he did as a youth he has a point, 23 is still young, you're capable of making mature decisions, but as the decision center of the brain is still developing I'd say big decisions should be considered a little more (and tbh if she looked it up anywhere on the internet she would have known what she was asking for was impossible, which shows that she didn't really do any research and hadn't been thinking about it for near long enough). Him saying he didn't want to act like a life coach just sounds like he was really trying to push the point that it isn't his place to make her life decisions for her, but it is his place to tell her if a tattoo is realistic, and when he did she gave attitude and pushback, if he didn't care he could have just tattooed the shitty script and been done with it, but he wanted to emphasize that it just wasn't a good idea and she was being too stubborn to listen. if I was an artist i would probably end up compiling a book of "your tattoo 5-10 years from now" where I just have pictures of people's tiny fine line script that had faded to oblivion.

Agreed. I have a fine line tattoo on the side of my wrist. It’s a wave that flows into a cursive “worry none,” and the font is meant to look like smaller waves. I knew it would blur some over time, and I designed it specifically so that when it did it would just look like waves instead of a blobby line. It’s been 7 years and I can still read it (so can others when I point out where the word break is) but it mostly looks like waves now, which is absolutely fine by me…I got the tattoo to help me ground myself during panic attacks. It was never meant to be legible for the greater public. THAT SAID, I think it was pretty clear the girl in that tiktok didn’t know how drastically a tiny fine line script tattoo would age and change. She never once mentioned how she knew it wouldn’t stay that dainty forever and that was ok, instead she kept saying “well this celebrity has it; well I’ve seen pictures so it can be done.” The tattoo artist was right to not give it to her and to try to explain to her why she didn’t want what that tattoo would have eventually become. To say that he “bullied” her and her experience was “hell” all because he saved her from having an illegible black blurry blob behind her ear was a gross exaggeration and even further proved that she doesn’t understand at all how tattooing really works. It’s not all Pinterest and Instagram fresh perfection.

So much of what she said was a very clear exaggeration that I can’t believe her when she claims he was being condescending. Most likely he was trying to dissuade her from going to a random scratcher somewhere who would give her what she wanted without a second thought….because he *knew* her lack of understanding on how tattoos heal, plus her lack of experience of what can and can’t be tattooed well overall, equaled a giant recipe for a blame-filled tattoo regret tantrum in the future. Regarding the girl with the tiny neck tattoo, I would side with the tattoo artist as well. As professionals I know they should tell the client what will work versus what won’t. That being said and I know it’s not right but I would feel like doing the tattoo she wants. Later down the road she would realize that she was wrong with the tattoo becomes totally illegible. It makes me laugh that she said she was being looked down on…..maybe it’s not because she’s young but because she’s not listening to the artist.😖

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it was intentionally done poorly so it'll fall out cause all of her tattoos were in the 'irresponsible' places. We had a tattoo artist in my city that would do that for everyone wanting hand/face tattoos that werent already completely blasted. @@ayajade6683 it’s not the turning them down that’s the issue, it’s the taking their money then deliberately giving them a tattoo in a way that’s guaranteed to fall out and disappear. That’s scamming someone. If I’m making a stupid choice for a tattoo then tell me and if you feel strongly enough about it just straight up refuse to do it. Don’t make me sit through the pain, waste both of our time, take my hard earned money for something that I fully believe will be with me for the rest of my life, only for me to wake up three days later to find my entire tattoo fell right out my body. That’s just mean. Even when the ink falls out you still have an open wound to take care of (that now is a frustrating and painful reminder that you got scammed) and scar tissue will form that could make it more difficult to tattoo that area in the future. Imagine that happening to you and how freaked out you would be, to have your entire tattoo fall out. I would be scared shitless thinking something was seriously wrong like an infection, or allergies to that specific ink, etc etc etc. There’s no reason to do that to someone. It’s like someone paying for a painting they believe was done by a Master, only to go to admire it a few days later to find a totally blank canvas because they’d been duped into buying a replica done in disintegrating ink.

Tell them why to try and prevent them from going to someone else. Don’t take their money, scar their body for life (even if the ink falls out, you will still scar, it’s still an open wound there’s just not ink in it anymore), and cause them big time stress by their tattoo suddenly falling out of their skin just to make a point. That’s such a mean and scummy thing to do.

I can only really remember scratching a new tattoo once, and it was because I had had an old one touched up and I scratched it and was like, "WAIT THAT'S FRESH AGAIN" Also on the point about celebrities getting tiny tattoos and having the money to get it lasered off, the real issue is if they have it lasered off and then immediately redone so it's fresh again, it'll give people the wrong idea about those micro tattoos. Like you'll have people going into tattoo shops all like, "WELL SO AND SO HAS HAD ONE FOR 10 YEARS AND IT STILL LOOKS GOOD"

With the cost being related to talent, I 100% agree. My wife was going to get a simple "small" design but I warned her that what she wanted would not look good small. What was a smaller cost of a few hundred quid has turned into almost a grand for what's now an almost full outer sleeve (one session left) and it looks epic. The artist's work is incredible and the design evolved a bit, so it'll cost what it costs.

Yesterday I had a client who had a cherub on one of her collarbones and she wanted the same cherub on the other, completely fine line, and in white ink. So I very logically tried to explain to her why I thought it was a bad idea and even included examples of how it would look healed. She still wanted to do it in white though, so I did. I said “as long as you understand how it’s going to heal”. I charged a bit more than I normally would for a tattoo that size because I know it’ll need to be touched up and I did make sure to let her know I offer 1 free touch up with that price. I think as a tattoo artist, you have to find a happy medium between pleasing the client and doing what you think is best. If you explain to your client your reasoning, a lot of the time they’ll listen, but a lot of the time they just want what they want and they might not even care how it heals.

i recently got a halloween tattoo and the artist was wearing a costume with fake abs which made when he was leaning up against my hand while tattooing my upper arm way less awkward and more funny lol. for the neck tattoo girl feel like that artist should have just politely told her no instead of dragging it on. idk if that happened, it could be she refused take no for an answer, but i feel like these interactions would go so much better if artists just went ‘hey appreciate what you want to do, it’s not something i am comfortable putting my name behind. we can do a simpler design in that placement or we can change the placement. otherwise i’d recommend finding an artist who is comfortable doing micro lettering like this.’ this crusade against fine line work when it’s a style mainly requested by woman who don’t have a lot of tattooes and don’t want alot of tattooes personally make me uncomfortable. i personally find any sort of lineless color work more egregious of a style but it’s nowhere near as bashed as micro and fine line from what i’ve seen.

while I see all the different ways this woman was misinformed prior to her appt, I don't blame her too much. if you want just one specific tattoo, it kinda makes sense that you see similar pictures online and figure it's possible for you to have something like that as well. it's not like it can't be done... because they obviously see proof that artists can do it. I blame celebrities and those artists that do these teeny tiny tattoos knowing that they won't last but are in it to just get famous. regular people see those pictures and figure it's possible for them too. in the end, the clients and responsible artists end up frustrated.

I get why some people are against the woman who wanted the small tattoo bc yeah everyone here I think is pretty solidly on the "bold will hold" boat. But as someone with a baby face, the amount of condescending, infantilizing shit you get from other adults who think you are a teenager is UNREAL. So I understand her annoyance. There a CONSTANT attitude you have to deal with in adult spaces when you look very young and it eats away at your patience for people telling you that you don't _really_ know or understand what you want and _they_ know better and can guide you. If she wants the tattoo smaller and he can do the tattoo smaller why not just do it? If he explained it will fade and she understands that, why try and push her to get something on her body that she doed not want? Just do it smaller. IDK just feels like a weird combo of infantilization and misogyny to me.

It's very possible that people will mistakenly blame an artist for a bad-looking tattoo if they don't know that those teeny tiny tattoos will just age badly no matter who does it. To protect his reputation, he has every right to decline. However, I think he should've simply refused to tattoo that on her then she could've then just gone to someone else.

Honestly I watch ink master just for the art, almost like playing along and coming up with my own ideas to keep my mind fresh and give me a challenge. I feel like you shouldn't use numbing cream because in most cases you wanna feel if its going to deep, but my artist showed me a trick for reducing swelling, pain, and redness. Before your tattoo is even wrapped you take a paper towel with pretty hot water and hold it on the tattoo for like 30 seconds, he did it with my hand tattoo and it hurt so bad but my tattoo didn't swell or hurt after that. The best way to deal with an itchy tattoo is slapping it. Best advice is even if you have social anxiety like I do, never let a tattoo artist take control in a disrespectful way like calling your tattoo stupid/changing your design drastically/giving you something you don't 100% want. I made that mistake on my third tattoo which was my hand tattoo and this year I had it fixed but now one of the only places I'm not dying from social anxiety is the shop because I had to force myself to speak up

Fun fact, the huge needle (AbusevTattoo btw with his 113mag) causes less trauma and it hurts LESS, since it is a largear area where the pain hits.. It is the same like rolling after a fall, it just covers a larger area. Just think about the worst thing when getting tattooed -> 1 or 3r round liners (used for highlights for example) ;) Also for the itching and stractching - phase. If you have dry skin, what you can do in the first 3-6 days (depends on how dry your skin is) you can just pack your tattoo like this. First put a "disposable changing pad" (like for diaper changing) over your tattoo and then use seran-wrap/clingfilm over the changing pad. It will soak everything your tattoos leak and does NOT stick to your skin. Change it 4-5 times a day, if you see less and less residues on the pads, stop using them, but normally used a day longer than what you think (since it may just get too dry the next day and it will form scabs) Wash your tattoo between every change with warm water (you can also use a little non-perfumated soap - tattoo soaps area the easiest to get!) and then put the tattoo cream of your choice on it, let it soak into your skin and then again cover it the same way. I have very dry skin and color work sleeves, I had issues with my skin scabbing and color even falling out (not my tattooes fault, since I have seen a lot of his fresh and healed work and I was the only one having issues).. After I start to use this, no issues -> EVER! And everyone asks my how does my colour work look so bright and fresh although it is years old.. It is THIS + I do not like to sunbathe or go too much out in the sun. This method is easier in the winter months than in the summer since it does get quite warm under it but you can solve a lot of issues through this (The tattoo being too dry, scabing, get stuck on your bedsheets and ruining those etc.)

So far my tattoo artist have mostly made minor suggestions to me and either I took them or I left them, but if my artist told me „no, that’s going to look horrible“ or „it’s not going to age well“ I trust them. They’re the expert. Of course I have an idea of how I want it to look like, but maybe my idea is not doable or just plain bad. I’ve always felt like my artists had my best interest in mind - so I’d trust them if they told me no. And I’m so glad once I was told no to having my fingers tattooed with a fine line tattoo - I would have regretted it, because it’s not what I’m into anymore at all and it probably wouldn’t look good anymore by now.

I wish more tattoo artists that talked about their craft online put more emphasis on how to properly and kindly communicate why certain ideas aren't the best, suggest better ones, and be good about explaining/possibly sketching? how it would likely look in x amount of time if that's the problem. Such as tiny script blowing out, and how it might be upsetting if it's something meaningful, but here's are a few other ways to get you what you want but have it stay properly. My piercer is like this and I've learned a lot from her. It makes me very comfortable since I know I'm in good hands that won't judge me, but will also help me understand why something won't work. Because of that, I've always gone with her suggestions, and they turn out great.
