I relapsed with self harm after getting my full sleeve done and the amount of shade I’ve gotten from artists about it is ridiculous. Recently had a portrait of my dog who just passed away and the artist literally asked me what I used to self harm with and was asking extremely personal questions. Like dude, manners? Ever heard of them?

How was it getting sh scars tattooed? I want to get tats over on my sh scars, but I’m worried an artist won’t do it because it’s hard to tattoo over? I relapsed hardcore, and I’m hoping that getting tattoos over them miiight slow my roll a bit (though I’m sure I’d find somewhere else, though I’ve never cut over any of my other tats but obviously it’s not a guarantee). Been thinking about it a lot lately.

I don’t have a huge amount to compare it to as my scars are VERY widespread all over but the deeper ones (especially keloid scars) are a lot more spicy and the healing can be a bit more tedious. But I will say it’s not too too bad and it’s 110% worth it! Much love x

@@justafractionoftime1984 I also got a tattoo over my scars and my artist said the lines can get a bit more blurry on the scars, in my case the bigger scars kept kinda rejecting the ink so she had to go over them several times and it does look like the shading isn't as intense on the scars. Definitely more sensitive than normal skin and shading hurt like hell on the bigger ones but 100% worth it. Just ask your artist if they can tattoo over them, it also depends on the age of the scars and probably their experience as well

as someone with a huge ass, i gotta say, that backboard thing looks so uncomfortable. i could not imagine sitting on it for more than half an hour without needing a break honestly. from the chair, not the tattooing lol also on the tattoo blindness, last year i couldn't figure out how the workers at the fruit stand i was going to weekly were recognizing me (while wearing a mask). the stand is located on a tourist route, so they see a lot of people once, and i figured with how many people they saw everyday i would be just another face. then one day after buying my fruit i got back in the car, started it up and saw my tattoos... then it alllll clicked

Jokes aside, the tattoos actually *do* help with that because goddamnit if I spent so much money on that thing I am NOT messing it up! This is exciting why I have tattoos too - they’re covering scars from self harm and I’ll be fucked if I’m wasting the tattoos I love. I can’t say I’m 100% over self harming, but it’s been a few years since I’ve let myself do it and I truly believe the tattoos really do help discourage me from doing it. These days I’ll look up flash tattoos on the more local tattoo artists and get a tattoo when I feel down

@@Itri_Vega Honestly, I wouldn't mind because my artist has a sense of humor (we click alright but not great, I prefer to just shut up unless we're discussing something specific, but he's nice and respectful, does a good job and he's a tattooer, not my psychiatrist so I'm cool with that. Hell, I've trusted the man to tattoo my boobs for 4x6 hours in an open studio as he was desperately trying his best to keep me as covered up as possible lol). I've had actual medical professionals (psych doctors, normal doctors, nurses) say *so much worse stuff* and that actually stung because they called me childish, attention-seeking, told me that this was a stupid thing to do or to grow up (this was from a pysch I saw for depression when I was 16... thanks asshole, I'm gonna grow up any fkin minute now) and they're supposed to know better, damn it! But yeah, at that point I didn't really give a shit about my scars, I just wanted them gone, but if I was still sensitive about them I would have gone to an artists that's a bit more... gentler. I love my guy but we definitely have some harmless bro banter in the shop that not everyone would be okay with.

As someone who self harms I'd probably start crying if a tattooer made a comment like that to me. I don't do it bc I want to and the last thing I'd ever want to do is to cut on my tattoos, which I don't do, but if I was ever to do that it would be bc something is really wrong and to have a comment like that would make me feel so ashamed.

  • @sleeplessinscotland2578

Don’t be ashamed - we all deal with our problem in whatever way we can - I’ve been a self harmer since I was about 15, I just turned 40 last week - it’s been a few years since I’ve actually engaged in self harming but I will always be someone who wants to in order to cope with whatever life throws at me. It sucks that we all do this as a result of shit that has happened to us that we can’t cope with, usually by other peoples treatment, but we do it to cope, and it’s still something that so many people don’t understand and think is attention seeking and use it as an excuse to look down on people making the us feel even shittier about ourselves. But you know what, that’s their problem, and if they can’t give me the benefit of the doubt and at least try to understand then they can jog on out of my life. I’ve gotten to the point I’ve stopped caring what people think of me, if someone asks why i have scars on my arms then I tell them - it just is what it is. However, if I was in a situation where a tattoo artist said this to me I wouldn’t want them working on me as I would no longer trust them to give me the tattoo I’ve asked for - I’d be more worried they would half arse it thinking there was no point in case I decided to cut through it in a few months. Thankfully I have yet to meet a tattoo artist who has reacted this way and have always been super supportive in trying to design my tattoos in ways that give the best coverage to my scars, especially the ones that have went keloid as they healed. But believe me when I say you have nothing to be ashamed of - every scar shows a battle that you’ve fought and won because you’re still here . As a general rule I always mention that a tattoo I’m getting would be to cover a scar if it’s a new person I’m going to and send them a picture of it along with the ideas I have for what I want, it makes it less awkward in the long run as we both know what to expect on the day. But yeah, long winded way of saying you have nothing to be ashamed of, yes work towards healthier coping mechanisms and better mental health but part of that is accepting the past and being ok with it. I hope you’re doing much better and that you find ways to help you cope without the cutting, sending my love

I just started my Apprenticeship at a tattoo studio in my city, and one thing to mention is all our artists are girls at the studio and we even get men clients who come into our studio and treat us artists like that. My boss had to deal with one client today who wouldnt stop staring at her boobs, and staring at one of our other artists who was wearing a shorter style dress where her tattoos just below her but were showing and he was commenting on them as well. So not only are clients being harrassed by male artists but Male clients are also treating their female artists horrible too.

My boyfriend's went super smoothly, but for my turn, the artist brought in my BOYFRIEND'S design, just assuming it was a couples tattoo... even though I had shown my different design to him earlier. He was so snippy with me when I corrected him and I kinda hate the tattoo now, even though it meant a lot to me. It's also way too big and rushed, I didn't have other tattoos to compare it to at the time. >:/

I just recently got a tattoo I got a couple years back reworked in different colors bc the original artist that did mine as a walk in was super uninterested in my idea. It’s just a simple symbol from an anime called Fairy Tail and I wanted it done in a medium pink color. I’m heavily tattooed and even have my knees done but this guy went SO deep into the tattoo that when it was healing I could tell something was wrong right from the get-go. By far my hardest heal and it’s just on my upper thigh. It wound up being super patchy bc some of the color fell out during the healing process. First and only tattoo I genuinely had regretted getting. But, I got it recolored and it looks much better already and has so far been a very nice heal. That original artist just shouldn’t be doing walk ins bc his style was very masculine and dark and edgy and just not what I wanted for a simple walk in tattoo so since he wasn’t interested in it or its meaning to me he decided it was okay to just destroy it.

Regarding what you said about your last video and the reactions to it (I didn't watch it, to not get triggered by it): I just got my first ever tattoo. I chose a female artist, as I liked her work. I also thought, I for sure be uncomfortable with a stranger man touching my chest area. As I'm autistic, the appointment alone was very stressful for me. I had to drive to a stranger town. 5-6 people there crammed in a small room at all times (I was there several hours), I had to get partially naked, everybody was chatting vigorously and the music just blasted through the room hurting my ears. It was so much for me, that I cried and hyperventilated throughout the entire session. Not only because of pain, but because of the sensory overflooding. I knew my female tattoo artist had some kind of attitude, as she showed in the chats prior. But overall she seemed okay. There was a male artist in the studio, who is specialized on very dark, sinister pieces, like skulls, scenes of horror movies, creepy clowns and that stuff. From the beginning on, I felt repelled by him. Now the tattooing started and it turned out, my tattoo artist was really 'special'. When I started sobbing throughout the session, she turned the music even louder, to not have to hear me. She in general wasn't that nice, I asked her several times for things to make me feel better (like telling me, how long estimately it might still take), but she complied only partially. The male tattoo artist was tattooing a girl on the next table. And I could hear them talk. He was super sensitive with her, comforting her, they had fun, laughed, he told her stories so she got distracted and she looked super relaxed. I myself was so tensed and cramped up, that my entire muscles on the body hurt for days. I even had inflicted bruises on myself. So of course there is the factor of a stranger male touching you, but I was surprised, that the male artist in this studio actually seemed to be the nicest artist there, although he is such a 'cool guy' doing such dark work. (now of course this is something completely different when it comes to harassment. I just wanted to tlk about my prejudices and how they were wrong)

That anxiety of "how will he react if I say no?" Is so real, and especially if it was a new artist to you and maybe even your first tattoo. Now the idea of messing up my design does freak me out, however, this was my thing to do and I really adore my artist (he's done nearly all of my tattoos) and I know if I did mess it up somehow, he'd help me sort it out. We've been through some shit together, for sure. And to be honest, it actually has helped me stop because it's one of my favorite tattoos and I genuinely do think to myself "You don't want to mess that up". I know that's not the case for everyone and I still struggle with the thoughts more than I'd like to. Be strong y'all.

I never realized there was such an issue with this - I've been tattooed by 3 different male artists now (and one female artist), and I'm really thankful the male artists I went to never showed me any disrespect, even as a young 19/20 year old woman at the time getting my first few tattoos. I really hope videos like these and stories shared by others will bring more awareness to this issue so we can stop it from happening. Tattooing is a really intense experience and you have to have a lot of trust in your artist and in yourself; gross artists bring a lot of disrespect to tattoos in general

While I agree that no-one should have to worry about breaking a chair, and ther fact this is a real worry is horrible, but 600lbs is a bit extreme. Apparrently the average chair holds up to 250lbs, so making them hold 350lb would likely be doable without sacrificing style or portability or wasting materials like plastic, while also supporting 99% of the population. I was 18, it was my first tattoo, and I didn’t know a lot about what to expect. He hit on me and harassed me the WHOLE time. I was so uncomfortable, but I tried to play it off. He kept asking me why I didn’t have a boyfriend etc… and I didn’t feel safe enough telling him I’m gay. After I left I swore I would only get tattoos from female tattoo artists, and to this day I have. I don’t want to hold to that forever because there are so many talented artists that I don’t want to miss out on, but I’m still nervous knowing how bad it can get. Also that back board seems uncomfortable as hell! I have a bad back and neck so no thanks.

Also, as a self harmer in recovery yeah that’s super mean - first off, it’s my body and the tattoo artist has no say over it, and second the majority of my tattoos hare actually to cover scars and personally, I wouldn’t cut over them as they’re my incentive to not do it again but if a tattoo artist said that to me I’d want to leave and them to not touch me again

I miss one coworker I had because she was the one person I could tell all the new information I had found and she would always ask questions or comment about how cool what I learnt was and it always made me feel happy to have someone to share that with. I tend to hyperfixate on one topic at a time, for a while I hyperfixated on castles so now I have random castle info and she would listen with genuine interest. Tbh I really miss working with her. A lot of people avoid going to the doctor for infected tattooing because going to the er can be up to 700 dollars even if you don’t get treatment and making an appointment for the future can give time for the tattoo to get worse while you’re waiting so people often try home remedies or self medication to get rid of infection. In the end it was specifically those hiccups that gave them the experience and knowledge regarding what to do and what to avoid with the next guy. Point being, every competent and established tattoo artist has a list of customers he jacked up on his way to proficiency.
