One thing I hate about the tattoo space is unless you’re getting huge extremely detailed dark realism tattoo , you’re getting judged. I was literally laughed at for getting a sunflower tattoo at a studio I went to but to me it meant so much. Dictating what people are getting on their own body is not cute.

So sorry for your experience, my first tattoo was a cute newschool cupcake. My tattooer was a huge guy built like a brick shithouse and he was super sweet about the whole process and did a fantastic job even adding sprinkels and a really cool background free hand. Another shop i went to (the guy that did my first one was a guest tattooer from Russia) on the other hand they treated me like trash.. wanted a full Dragonball sleeve and they postponed my appointment three times, the third time they didnt even bother telling me and the guy just waved me off telling the receptionist to give me another appointment (which would have been in 6 months).. i was booked for an 8 hour session and had to take a day vacation from work. For nothing. So, there are some serious dicks in the industry but also some really good people.

I love the idea of parents getting behind their kids getting tattooed, my dad said he'd boot me to the street if I came home with a tattoo. I came home with a full bicep piece, he liked it. Back to the subject at hand. . . I just think 16 is a bit young for making permanent marking choices.

sure it's a little young, but it's a nice tattoo with great meaning behind it, she'll likely never ever regret it, that's just her case tho, I'm sure you're talking about 16 year olds in general, to which I agree. I'm 17, been wanting tattoos since I was about 12, here in Ireland there's no minimum age for getting a tattoo, but of course, artists can deny you if they themselves believe you're too young and they don't feel comfortable tattooing someone they deem too young. So I could have gotten a tattoo whenever, but I'm waiting until my 18th birthday before I dive into committing to tattoos.

About the person who tattooed themselves and gave a bunch of tips, my thought process is that its best to go to a professional, but if you decide you're not going to, the better option aside from going to a professional is to do things as safely as you can (because let's be honest, people are still going to tattoo themselves without professional help so others might as well provide tips on how to stay safe in doing so)

It fits into the larger harm reduction conversation. Do you provide tips on how to be more safe when doing something dangerous? For example, providing birth control and proper sex ed versus trying to discourage teens from having sex at all. Should you provide clean needles and narcan to addicts or does that encourage that behavior? I’m conflicted on the topic of tattoos. People will tattoo themselves anyways, so they should be safe. However, I really disliked that tiktok and it does seem like it encourages people to tattoo themselves. Idk.

I plan on going to a professional for my main tattoos as they will be rather intricate, but I do just want a simple smily face on the top of my food. I won't go to a pro for that because I don't care if it looks bad (that's kind of the point). I have drawn a smile on my hand almost every school day for the past year and a half, and it's become an important thing for me. Love your vids. As an artist, the guy ranting about "Pinterest tattoos" pissed me off SO MUCH lol. Sure I could also diss "pinterest tattoos" because so much artwork gets stolen online for trends and the result can look like a budget ripoff...but as far as I could tell that was not his point. EVERY example he gave was hyper-realistic. He seems like the kind of dweeb who thinks realism is an inherently better art form - It's not. It takes a LOT of skill to nail realism, but also it takes a TON of skill to stylize things in such a way that is eye-pleasing and unique. Good stylized artwork requires knowledge of balance, interpretation, line widths and requires many many studies. They are just different art styles. Wanted to shove that man into a locker when he said something like "Go outside and see what real things look like!" I'm so sorry but I would sooner tattoo "kick me" on myself than get a realistic portrait tattooed. Sure, I admire the skill, but in my tastes it'd just be creepy having something "realistic" on my skin. I don't want to look in a mirror and see someone else looking at me LOL. A stylized image of an animal feels more classy and representational than a straight up photo-real duck. If I wanted to see a real duck, I can look at a photo or go to the farm - a stylized duck has the artist's unique interpretation and can suggest personality, movement, culture, and so many more things photo-realism can't. LOL rant over but it's such a narrow-minded and boring way of looking at art I could not stand being in a room with that guy he'd make me SO mad oh my god I'm imagining him saying something like "Van Gogh was a terrible artist because his work wasn't realistic enough" 😂😭 Also have to agree with others about the person giving advice for tattooing at home. I super, super agree that no one should tattoo at home, and in some ways I could see how describing how to do it sets a bad example. But I feel like a lot of people who have it set in their mind would do it anyway even if told not to, especially if they are attracted to tattooing to rebel, are going through hard times and impulsion as a result, they "don't care" if they hurt themselves, etc - telling them ways to make it safer could potentially prevent huge damage. Similar to how abstinence-only sex and drug education doesn't statistically help; but telling people the facts about safety greatly lowers the numbers of teen pregnancies and drug-related deaths. If someone is going to tattoo themselves anyway, I would much much rather they be as safe as possible.

I love Lauren’s content but I feel I always disagree with her when it comes to at home tattoos (which is fine!) but I’m finally leaving this comment because I think it would be a good conversation starter if Lauren saw it! That specific tiktok is a WONDERFUL example of harm reduction principles! For context I am a harm reduction nurse lmao and this is a weird back door into how I think about things. Telling people not to do something has historically never worked because it’s just not how we are wired as humans (eg. abstinence, war on drugs, anti-abortion) even IF that thing is bad for us. Similar to how people consume drugs for different reasons, people also tattoo at home for different reasons and they will do it really no matter what - soooo the best we can do is harm reduction! Encourage safe supply, safe use, as well as how to look out for signs of infection etc. Principles of harm reduction can apply to a lot of different public health measures 😁

Big yes! other thoughts 1) she was doing a design that was intimate and perhaps doing it on herself was for intentional reasons 2) so many artists start out this way and a lot of it has everything to do with the gatekeeping of who gets to "officially" learn and who even has access to doing so financially. 3) tattooing has been around long before western centric ideals and standards. The safety and sanitation is important of course - (and shes encouraging it) but the rest is probably arbitrary "how it should be done" projections that are exclusionary of a lot of ways tattooing is practiced.

The fact that you're in a group that's whole purpose is to shame people for their ink is pretty fuckin shitty, ngl. I don't understand why people can't just go about their business and quit trying to shame people for their personal ink choices. Every tattoo doesn't have to be some super original dark and brooding photo realistic line work. Sometimes people want shit you think is too common, minimalistic or stupid when it has much more meaning to them. You're not getting it on your skin, so why the fuck do you care? It's none of your business. It's just petty and childish to sit and judge people on their ink like that, no matter how dumb you think it is.

  • @DrBitchcraft.

Ugh that one guy who was complaining about "pinterest tattoos" (=simple line work)... what if some people don't want realism? I personally like line tattoos because it matches my style, I'm a children's book illustrator. I like cute tattoos. I don't like heavy looking tattoos and realism usually falls into that category.

Actually the Twilight novels have a very real and harmful impact: specifically on the Quileute Tribe of La Push. The novels very much mangled their sacred history and stories, which are incredibly important to them and their identities, but it also, against their wills, made their home a tourist trap. This hasn't lead to increased revenue, but rather trashed land, fetishism to their faces, and other disgusting behavior by people obsessed with Twilight and forgetting the Quileute are Real People. I get you're British and far away, but it's important to realize that words on a page have a profound impact on real people. Bella and Edward may be ultimately harmless, but the real world impact Stephanie Meyer had on a marginalized, poor community is in no way something we can brush off.
