Tascam needs to thank you if they haven’t already done so. I’ve been shopping for a four track simultaneous recorder and whilst comparing, this unit stands out as the most useful, versatile and durable.I’ll be creating in ways not yet imagined!

Thanks for these excellent tutorials. Don’t have a Model 12 yet, but sill get one. This is a lot nicer than using a DAW

At 4:46 when I press the SOLO button the MUTE lights for the other channels won't light up on my TASCAM 12. What did I miss? I have installed version 1.41. edit: I'm sorry! You explained it afterwards.

Nice guide! Im thinking about getting a tascam model 16... Do you first record all tracks in your daw using the audio interface from the Model 24 and after you finish the record you switch the channel modes to receive the same tracks from daw to tascam and use the EQ, faders and effects to print the mix in a stereo master track? Thanks

Yes you can do that, but you can also record each channel to a track on the SD card and do the mixdown.

I record & mix solely on the model 12. Up until now I've only ever recorded on analog. On tape. Then mix down to a final 2 channel stereo mix & that's it. Still learning how to do it on the model 12. Not sure if I wanna continue to mix down onto tape to keep that analog sound, or mix down to a some kind of DAW. Problem is, I haven't found any DAWs i like. I won't (& can't afford) to waste money on DAWs just to try them out. None of the "free trials" or free DAWs would open or work when I tried them. The only one that would work is Audacity. & It's perfectly fine to just mix down to a stereo mix with Audacity but you can't multi track with it because the latency is so bad it's basically unusable (near impossible to get tracks aligned/synced up.) But unfortunately, with Audacity being the only DAW I've been able to use for mixing down, it's not compatible with the model 12. So I'm kinda in a bind with that....

But I did extract the individual tracks from the SD card & imported them to Audacity & there were no noticeable latency issues whatsoever. I just couldn't EQ them like I had them EQ'd on the model 12.

Which DAW have you tried? I recommend Studio One Prime edition. I have a video on how to download and install. Then you can get the files from the SD card and mix.

@@RecordingStudio9 besides Audacity (which I don't know if you'd consider it a DAW, but always used to make a final stereo mixdown) I've tried every free DAW I could find, or ones that I believe offered a free trial.

@@RecordingStudio9 ...but none of them would work. Only one of them would open & I don't remember which one it was, but I still couldn't do anything with it. I have no idea why. (Sorry, my phone started acting weird so I had to cut my other comment short.)

@@RecordingStudio9 & I'm not 100% certain - yet - but I just got home a little while ago & tried to hook up to the tape deck I always mixed down to, from the main outs (with the help of some XLR to RCA adapters) & just did a mixdown to cassette. That's not what I wanted, but close. I'm trying to ditch tape although if I can, at least for recording purposes. So I might have it figured out.

Hi Vatche, great work! I mainly use the Model 12 to capture flying music ideas, acquire old 4-track recordings, overdub and remix them in standalone mode (as much as possible). I noticed my Model12 rotary controls produce an annoying stepped noise when operated, Tascam support have no experience on this so I sent the unit for inspection and hopefully a fix. I made a video illustrating the noisy behaviour kzread.info/dash/bejne/pI5pxrOFeqe3YZM.html and I would appreciate an opinion from you and anyone who can contribute to knowledge. Max

Thanks for informing. I will test mine and see if I get the same result. The EQ is digital, but the knobs maybe bit crackly, causing the glitch in the software. I'll keep you posted.

@@RecordingStudio9 It looks like there is no smoothing of the encoders/pots value when they are operated, sadly with this behavior my Model 12 is unfit for real-time remix of recorded tracks. I didn't test if the defect also affects the use as a DAW controller. BTW I hope Tascam service will fix or replace it in a reasonable time.

Excellent, i play my tascam and live mix as it records to my daw as 1 single track. I am interested to see a new better way.
