    Great videos! I don't think compressing and EQ ing multiple times is ever a problem as long as it continually sounds good. Multiple EQ and compression applications are common. I use a Model 12 with some outboard gear and get great results. This guy is by far one of the better content creators.

    I record ‘post’ to maintain the option to double up the EQ & comp in mixdown. If I want something “pre” while recording Iive, then I just zero out the knobs. Less button pushing in the menu is always good for me.

    So, for plain vanilla recording, I record pre-compression. But if I want an instrument to sound very different from the start, similar to putting a pedal on a guitar for that particular sound, then I’ll record post comp/EQ to get a new sound. I’m a new M12 user and am pleased with how it works. Thanks for the generous and informative videos. They seem to be made by a musician, for musicians, with an understanding for what musicians may want to consider. I look forward to seeing more of these.

    I think the 12 is better for live bands because it doesn't print comp+eq. EQ for the room you are performing in, then later you could master it for listening.

    Hello, I have old tapes of a live performance. I would like to clean up the imperfections of the tape, hiss, rough recording quality etc. Would you recommend that I record on my Tascam Model 12, Post EQ?, or record it with a Pre setting, then clean it up on the final mix down? Thank you!

    Hi am looking at getting the Model 24 my goal is to record, transfer files to studio one mix down and play in a live setting on occasion. So, my inputs for live would be Bass 1, Guitar 2, Kick 3, Snare 4, Rack Tom 5, Floor Tom 6, OHL 7, OHR 8, Lead Vocal 9, Back up Vocal 10, Keys Backing Track 11, Synth Backing Track 12, Guitar Backing Track 13/14, FX Backing Track 15/16, Click Track 17/18. This would be a pretty full setup. So, my question is 1. Would this be a proper input setup based off the instruments being assigned to the proper input? like the Bass bing in input 1 and so on... 2nd based off the amount of inputs I could possibly run in a live setting then the Tascam Model 24 looks like the unit I should go with correct?? Thank you for your in depth reviews and walk throughs!!!!

    11/12, master bus, records everything you hear on the Main Bus, including FX, fader levels, EQ and Comp. If you set the Main Post Fader, then Main EQ and Fader level is also recorded/printed.

    I have the Model12 and I like to record post EQ to draw via USB, but when I playback all recorded channels sending them to 9/10 to listen how it sounds it clipping digitally and I don't know why, I can't tell if the recorded tracks are like that or it's just the playback, but when I record same settings post EQ into the micro SD it playbacks perfectly so I don't know how to playback from PC without clipping 😢, although model 12 is a great machine I still can figure it out. Great videos I've watched all of model 12 playlist several times they're very very helpful thank you 🎉🎉🎉

    @@RecordingStudio9 I recorded post EQ on tracks 3456, and left the tracks 1 and 2 standard for PC playback, I don't have any other FX or processes going when playback, the master bus and all tracks in the daw are just simply recording and playing back the sound, no FX or anything going, just wanted to have a EQ on the knobs for recording drums, and leave it untouch so I can record on the go, what I did is I recorded to micro SD a drum take pre EQ, then played it back and mixed it on the board, then recorded post EQ to the daw and when I want to play it back to hear the differences or make sure it was recorded correctly, it clips digitally on each track, when I playback every other channels is muted and I only hear tracks 1 and 2 with the compressor off and EQ at 12 but it sounds awful, I don't if I'm doing someone wrong I can't find out

    Hi! I know this is not your question. But note that the 16/24 are analog mixers while the 12 is the only digital interface mixer. So if youre looking to use it as an interface aswell the 16 and 24 are no option.

    So I was looking at a 16 or 24 because it was analog. My goal was to use the Tascam to give it some analog characteristics back into my DAW. Unfortunately, I can’t multitrack post compressor and EQ with the 16/24, which IS possible with the 12. The big question is, will the 12 and it’s EQ and compressor give the any sound character improvements ? How does the 12 sound recording back into the DAW? Or just stay in the box?

  • @RecordingStudio9

    @RecordingStudio9

    Жыл бұрын

    Model 12 is digital so you will not get any analog vibe. It's no different than mixing in the box. With models 16/24 (I recommend 24 for more channels) to mix a song, you will feed the channels/stems from DAW to each respective channels on the Model 16/24. You can use both Comp and EQ (analog) and record the Main Mix Bus back into the DAW on a new stereo track. Then you will get some analog feel. Will it be worth it? The experience, yes, the rest, it's a personal choice. P.S. with Models 16/24, Comp & EQ come after raw audio recording for USB and SD Card. This video might help you understand the reasons why. kzread.info/dash/bejne/fJ-cqdRwgqWumLA.html

    You could do the mix in the DAW using the Model 12 as a DAW controller or you can also send the audio streams to the Model 12 and use the onboard mixing capabilities. In both cases, the sound quality is digital/good, but biggest benefit is the usability and direct control for e.g. a live situation or if your creative workflow needs hardware knobs. If you want analog audiophile magic, you would need to pay much more money… that, in my humble opinion, is better invested in a decent analog synthesizer or some hardware effect pedals.

    Question: Is it that the operator can do the mixing after recording and saving the song, therefore not over mixing on the first recording, within the Tascam, absent a DAW, if you wish? Can you then save the new mixed result in the Tascam on the SD? Just trying to clarify for myself, and perhaps others.

  • @RecordingStudio9

    @RecordingStudio9

    Жыл бұрын

    That is correct. Raw audio (No Comp/EQ/FX) are recorded of each channel onto the SD card, which then can be played back and mixed as many times into the final stereo mix with Comp/EQ/FX, onto the SD card.

    @@sawssman965 Yes, I testing this just a few days ago myself. I put an sd card in, recorded a few things from a live recording by starting, stopping, setting the rec buttons again and recording again, etc. When done, I went into the menu on the tascam and told it to go into 'storage mode' and then I copied all the folders it had created by itself over to my recording folder on my pc. From what I can tell, it creates all 8 tracks as separate files and then includes 2 mixed tracks also with everything mixed together already, which I ignored because I want to mix them myself. This was what I had observed anyway. Hope it helps someone else.

  • @3dsman

    @3dsman

    He basically already answered this if I understood him correctly... No.. you want to set it to PRE for EQ because what you're doing is EQ'ing to the room the performance is being given in. The recording will later be played back in your headphones.. or on speakers in a nice listening room.. or in a room with different acoustics... SO... you want to have the ORIGINAL/VIRGIN recording without the customized EQ used to suit the performance environment so that you can tinker with it to suit whatever you are going after later. Once you record with the room EQ permanently affecting the recorded audio the cake is baked... you can't unbake it. Well.. you can TRY to unbake it by boosting bass that had been cut previously (for example) but ideally you want the original un-EQ'ed version so you have free reign to do as you please without being restricted by the EQ settings you used on to make that night's performance environment sound good.

    As far as Comp & EQ, watch the video. You can do a stereo mixdown by just pressing record button with no channel armed for recording. This will record all channels into tracks 11/12 of the MAIN bus, which includes FX. You can then export this as a stereo mix WAV file.
