[TAS] Super Monkey Ball Adventure Story 100%

Ойындар

Special Thanks: ‪@meowmix_fan7463‬, ‪@IkeSMB‬
This is a TAS of Super Monkey Ball Adventure with a 100% completion, acquiring the best ending of this game. This had been in the works for some time before now, earliest progress was back in 2021, but it's smba so there's some give and take. Included in this TAS is Commentary which can be toggled via Subtitles.
There are still a few rough edges here and there, but it's much better than the old any% TAS. As an estimate if everything were ironed out a bit more (at the expense of time and a few thousand rerecords) would be around a timesave of 10ish seconds. Would reckon this is similar to the level of optimization seen in the current SMB2 Expert-Master TAS.
Final times are: Tas timing, 59:38. Speedrun timing, 58:52.

Why is it that all of the games I loved as a child are games that everyone thinks are trash? 🥺 I really liked this game as a kid.

I don't have it anymore, but it was alright. In my opinion, if this game had a jump button, it would make this WAY better and be seen as a unique take on the series, and possibly have better sequels.

You must be younger than me, but overall I can relate with a lot of my childhood games, especially Banjo-Kazooie. BK is mostly held in high regard these days, but when it first came out it was very polarizing. People either loved the fact that it was clearly a well-made game or they hated the fact that it was cutesy and all that. These were the same people that would think I was crazy for giving the slightest criticism to games like Doom, Mortal Kombat, Grand Theft Auto, ect. It could be frustrating at times, but overall they never really got to me much because I knew their opinions were shallow.

I guess it was ok, my opinion on it really faded in the years since, but judging from the 2 hours I replayed; I just preferred SMB2 because it actually had a clear, concise goal, it stayed with the more abstract but tightly designed levels and mostly left it at that, less is more oftentimes. However, here, since you can't jump, it would get so annoying trying to get anywhere such as up slopes or walls due to being set in a more grounded setting, it just felt like the game was fighting with me at all times. It also did no favor that the main monkeys were always stuck inside their ball, it made sense in the previous games because so they could reach every levels in the void, and I get it's weird to complain about it in a Monkey BALL game, but when they're standing next to the plain NPCs, not subjected to the same rules and inside realistic environments allegedly suited for them, it just felt wrong. Heck, in Zootopia where everyone were trapped in, when you free them at the end, they didn't gave a shit about being freed, and one of the main characters was like "They just wanted to know they can leave", even as a kid, I thought it was stupid, it speaks volume I still remember it to this day, this whole thing about some big adventure felt really tacked on and I could hardly get invested. But, on the other hand, having a more grounded setting does allow for some interesting level design, like the hedge maze in Zootopia, I had to look for the right slopes to be able to build up speed to then launch myself on top of the hedges to reach the bananas there, that makes me think outside the box a bit and is not something the previous games had room for.

It was so awesome to see everything you put into this over the past few months, I absolutely loved seeing all the crazy strats! My favorite bit had to be the Rufus + oil balloons section, going out of bounds hovering off the balloon was the epitome of TAS shenanigans if you ask me. The captions you made for the whole TAS as well explaining a lot of what was going on was the cherry on top. You're a boss for making this Gonquai!

hoverball stuff at 51:35 was my favorite. lots of the movement made me laugh because of how ridiculous it is, knowing what it feels like to try and control the ball in real time. great TAS!

This was incredible! The instant warps off the flowers and the long hover up on the balloon blew my mind. Loved seeing all the other glitches and cool movement too, especially at the end of Moonhaven. Watching with the captions on was really enjoyable too, great work on this Gonquai!

This game would have been actually decent if it controlled better and wasn’t revolved around archaic and cryptic missions.

Very cool! Unrelated question: on your SMB S&R video, did you use a real balance board or emulated input?

Maybe there is a glitch during that moment that makes an infuriating sound.
