Commander Keen 4: Secret of the Oracle (1991) is a part of the popular Commander Keen ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Command... ) saga, developed by id Software ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Id_Soft... ), and is the first episode of Commander Keen in Goodbye Galaxy.
Several months after the freeing the Vorticons from Mortimer McMire, Commander Keen (Billy Blaze) finds out that an unknown race called the Shikadi are planning to destroy the Milky Way. He sets course towards Gnosticus IV on a quest to discover their location with the Oracle's aid. Upon arrival, he discovers that the Shikadi have captured the Council Members. In order to save the universe, Keen must fly to the Shadowlands and rescue them.
Using a series of tricks listed in the submission text ( tasvideos.org/3467S ), Keen reaches the ending in a mere 10 minutes.
Be sure to also watch the exciting conclusion ( tasvideos.org/1977M ) to Goodbye Galaxy.

Those little flying bugs always creeped me out when I was a kid. My tensions would skyrocket anytime one was on the screen.

I'm blown away by the gem skip in isle of fire. Is there some sort of trick with climbing up on the ledge to not move forward? Either that or is it that the berkeloid is in such a specific place that the likelihood of this being humanly replicated is almost zero?

Late reply, but you are correct! The berkeloid first needs to be as far to the right as it can go, and then it needs to throw an RNG fireball during Keen's ledge climbing animation for it to stay out of the way long enough to clear him with a jump. The other enemies on screen in the pit are also advancing the RNG in unpredictable ways. I believe that there's no way to do this on reaction, and a leap of faith with only one attempt after waiting for him to be around the right position would be as good as it gets with extremely low chances of working. It took many iterations to find an usable luck manipulation for this to be possible in the TAS.

@@turskastg3138 Thanks for your response, that's really interesting. Do you know if there's any way to manipulate the slugs' positions in miragia?

@@robertmcknightmusic Nothing I know of that's RTA viable - the time at which you enter the stage from the Shadowlands, shooting, and enemy actions all change the RNG and enemies can move and take RNG actions while they're offscreen. RNG state when starting the game is also not constant, but seeded from at least the system date&time. (JPC-RR, the emulator used for this TAS, can set this in the movie file.)

@@turskastg3138 no way! that's crazy! if you knew though what the ideal seed was, couldn't you just set your system date/time to that? (is there a way to "lock" your computer's date/time?)

@@robertmcknightmusic It might be possible. But keeping the RNG predictable would require following a very precise pre-planned route, probably one made specifically for RTA viability and would likely go off route from one stray enemy, or a stage entry being a frame off. The first stage being manipulable in real-time might be realistic, but keeping it from straying and getting desirable outcomes is not easy in TAS already.

@@tastybekonn I'm coming in late here, but saying TASes are "bot" recordings is a little misleading! Tool assisted speedruns are made to show what a theoretical "perfect" speedrun would look like, using emulator tools and rerecording to record inputs frame by frame. Other tools used include memory watch, Lua scripting, and in fact yes custom made bots. Some runners even reverse engineer a game's code to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanics. Even a ten minute run like this might represent months of work, and the knowledge of an entire community of glitch hunters and speedrunners. If you want to know more about what goes into a TAS, I really suggest clicking through the links in the description and reading the author's notes and some of the resources on TASVideos itself. I'm not a TASer myself, but I'm a big fan (especially of the more technical aspects, such as emulator development and reverse engineering).
